Install Hermes Agent, configure at least one model provider, then run hermes dashboard. A normal local launch listens at http://127.0.0.1:9119 and opens the browser for you. The dashboard is an administration and monitoring layer around the Hermes runtime: it does not replace installing the agent or configuring a provider.
For the safest setup, keep the server bound to loopback, complete one ordinary chat in the Chat tab, and only then add gateways, skills, scheduled jobs, voice, routing, or MCP integrations. A remotely reachable dashboard needs an authentication provider and careful callback and WebSocket configuration.
What the Hermes Web UI does
The Hermes dashboard is a browser interface for configuring an installed Hermes Agent instance. It brings together settings, API-key management, model selection, skills, MCP configuration, chat, and session monitoring. The embedded Chat tab runs the terminal user interface through a PTY and WebSocket connection, so you can test the same agent runtime from a browser.
The dashboard is machine-level rather than limited to one conversation. It can switch between profiles, while each profile keeps its own configuration and operational data. The status view reports the Hermes version and release date, gateway state, currently active sessions, and recent session details. It refreshes automatically every five seconds, counts sessions active during the preceding five minutes, and lists the 20 most recent sessions with model, message count, token usage, and a conversation preview.

Hermes documentation describes the local mode this way: “The dashboard runs entirely on your machine — no data leaves localhost.” That statement applies to the dashboard connection itself; your selected model provider still receives prompts when the agent sends them for inference.
Before you install
Use a Linux or macOS shell, Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, or native Windows PowerShell. You need permission to install files in your user profile, an internet connection for the installer and provider login, and credentials for whichever model provider you choose. Node.js and npm are not required for the normal CLI installation, but npm can be used automatically to build the dashboard frontend on first launch if a prebuilt frontend is not present.
- POSIX systems: the installer places the source under
~/.hermes/hermes-agent/. - Native Windows: the documented source location is
%LOCALAPPDATA%hermeshermes-agent. - Remote use: decide in advance which authentication method you will use. Do not expose an unauthenticated listener to the internet.
Install Hermes Agent
Linux, macOS, and WSL2
Run the official installer from a shell:
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bashThe script installs the command-line program and the agent source in your user-level Hermes directory. Close and reopen the terminal, or reload the shell startup file used by your shell:
source ~/.bashrcFor zsh, use:
source ~/.zshrcThen confirm that the command is available:
hermesIf the command is not found after reloading, start a new terminal and check that the installer’s user-level bin directory is on PATH. Do not proceed to dashboard troubleshooting until the base hermes command runs.
Native Windows PowerShell
Open PowerShell and run the Windows installer:
iex (irm https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.ps1)Start a new PowerShell window after installation, then verify the command:
hermesThe Windows source tree is documented under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermeshermes-agent. If PowerShell cannot find hermes, reopen the shell so the updated user PATH is loaded.
Alternative distribution formats
The project documentation also describes a Desktop bundle, source and CLI installation, Docker, and Termux on aarch64 Android. Those are separate packaging choices rather than extra dashboard features. Choose one installation method for a given machine, and keep the runtime and dashboard on the same host unless you deliberately configure a remote backend.
Configure a model provider
Installing Hermes gives you the runtime; it does not automatically supply a model account. Configure a provider before relying on the dashboard’s Chat tab.

Interactive provider selection
Run:
hermes modelThe command presents an interactive provider and model selection flow. Follow the prompts to enter or select the credentials and model required by your provider. Keep API keys in Hermes’ key-management flow rather than placing them in shell history or sharing them through a browser URL.
Fast setup with Nous Portal
The quickest official route is:
hermes setup --portalThis signs you in to Nous Portal, sets the provider, and enables the Tool Gateway. It is appropriate when you want a guided setup with the portal account rather than configuring a provider key manually.

Quick, full, and blank-slate setup modes
The setup wizard offers three useful starting points:

Blank Slate is a good diagnostic baseline because it limits optional moving parts. If a basic conversation works there, add gateways, cron, skills, voice, routing, or MCP individually and test after each change.
Install dashboard dependencies
The Web UI uses FastAPI and Uvicorn for its HTTP server. Hermes includes a web extra for these dependencies. If they are missing, the dashboard command reports what needs to be installed; follow that message in the same environment where the hermes command runs.
On a first launch, Hermes can build the frontend automatically when npm is available and no built frontend is present. Allow extra time for that initial build. If npm is unavailable, install the web dependencies indicated by Hermes, then run the dashboard again. A successful CLI installation without web dependencies can still leave the agent usable in the terminal while the dashboard fails to start.

Launch the UI with:
hermes dashboardThe default behavior starts a local server, opens a browser window, and listens at http://127.0.0.1:9119. If the browser does not open, enter that address manually while the command remains running.

The --insecure option is deprecated and has no effect. It does not disable authentication requirements and should not be used as a way to make a public bind work.

Complete the first-chat check
- Leave the terminal running the dashboard process.
- Open the displayed local URL, normally
http://127.0.0.1:9119. - Select the intended profile if more than one is available.
- Open Chat and send a simple prompt that does not require optional tools.
- Confirm that Hermes returns a response and that the conversation appears in the session view.
The operational rule is simple: if Hermes cannot complete a normal chat, stop and fix the provider, credentials, model, or base installation before enabling additional features. Gateways, skills, cron, voice, routing, and MCP add independent failure points; adding them first makes diagnosis harder.
Navigate the dashboard
Status
The status page is the quickest health check. It shows the agent version and release date, gateway status, sessions active within the last five minutes, and the 20 most recent sessions. Each recent entry includes the model, message count, token usage, and a conversation preview. The page refreshes every five seconds, so it is useful for watching a gateway or chat session without repeatedly reloading the browser.
Configuration and API Keys
Use the configuration area for Hermes settings and the API Keys area for provider credentials. The dashboard is a management surface, not a second credential store unrelated to the CLI: changes apply to the selected Hermes profile on that machine. Treat anyone who can access a remotely exposed dashboard as potentially able to alter settings or use stored credentials.
Models, Skills, and MCP
Models controls the available model configuration. Skills and MCP expose optional capabilities after the basic runtime is working. Add one integration at a time, run a normal chat, and inspect the status page before proceeding to the next change.
Chat
Chat is embedded in every dashboard launch. It connects to the terminal interface through a PTY/WebSocket layer, so terminal and browser sessions use the same underlying agent behavior. A chat response confirms more than page loading: it verifies that the selected profile, provider credentials, model, and runtime can work together.

Profiles and machine-level management
The dashboard can manage multiple Hermes profiles from one machine. Config, API Keys, Skills, MCP, Models, and Chat follow the profile selected in the interface. To select a profile directly in a URL, append its name as a query parameter:
http://127.0.0.1:9119/?profile=workReplace work with the profile name you created. Keep profile names clear when a machine hosts separate personal, work, or test configurations.
Profiles are not merely visual filters. Profile-specific gateway processes, session databases, and cron schedulers remain separately managed. A working chat in one profile does not prove that another profile has valid keys, a reachable model, or a running gateway. Switch profiles deliberately before changing credentials or enabling a skill.

Expose the dashboard remotely without leaking keys
Keep loopback for local use
For a single-user workstation, keep the default loopback bind, 127.0.0.1. It limits the HTTP server to the local machine and avoids turning a browser management surface into a network service.

A non-loopback bind requires an authentication provider. The documented choices are Nous OAuth, the bundled basic-auth option for a trusted network, or self-hosted OIDC. Select one based on who should reach the dashboard and whether you operate an identity provider.
- Nous OAuth: configure the OAuth client identifier using
HERMES_DASHBOARD_OAUTH_CLIENT_IDand complete the provider’s callback setup. - Bundled basic auth: use the dashboard’s documented basic-auth environment variables and restrict access to a network you trust. Do not treat basic auth as suitable protection for an openly reachable internet address.
- Self-hosted OIDC: set the documented OIDC variables for your identity provider, issuer, client, and callback details.
Do not guess variable names for basic auth or OIDC. Use the environment-variable reference that matches your Hermes version, because an incorrectly named variable can leave the server without the protection you intended.
Set the public URL consistently
Set HERMES_DASHBOARD_PUBLIC_URL to the externally reachable dashboard URL. Hermes uses it for OAuth callbacks and host/WebSocket checks. The value must match the URL users actually open, including the scheme, hostname, port, and any path prefix supported by your reverse proxy.
If Hermes Desktop should connect to a backend running elsewhere, set HERMES_DESKTOP_REMOTE_URL to the backend address, for example:

A remote desktop connection does not remove the dashboard’s authentication requirement.
Bind only after authentication is ready
- Configure the selected OAuth, basic-auth, or OIDC variables in the environment that launches Hermes.
- Set
HERMES_DASHBOARD_PUBLIC_URLto the final external address. - Start Hermes on the required interface, such as
hermes dashboard --host 0.0.0.0 --port 9119. - Place firewall or reverse-proxy rules in front of the service so only intended clients can reach it.
- Open the external URL in a private browser window and verify that authentication is required.
- Complete a chat and confirm the WebSocket connection remains stable.
Never assume that binding to a private LAN address is automatically safe. Other devices on that network may still be able to reach the port, and stored API keys make an authenticated dashboard a high-value target.

Troubleshoot common failures
hermes is not found
Reload the shell or open a new terminal. On POSIX systems, verify that the installer’s user bin directory is on PATH; on Windows, reopen PowerShell so the updated user path is loaded. Confirm the expected source directory exists before reinstalling.

The dashboard reports missing FastAPI or Uvicorn
Install the Hermes web extra or follow the exact dependency command printed by the dashboard. Run the command in the same virtual environment or user context that owns the hermes executable.

Check that the dashboard process is still running and that another service is not using the port. Try hermes dashboard --port 8080, then open the new URL shown by Hermes. If you used --no-open, remember that the server starts without launching a browser.
The frontend build fails
If Hermes says the frontend is not built, ensure npm is installed and available to the same user running Hermes, then retry. A failed build is separate from provider authentication: resolve the frontend dependency first, then test the page again.
Chat opens but produces no response
Return to provider configuration. Run hermes model or repeat the appropriate setup flow, verify that the selected model is enabled for the account, and check the API key in the selected profile. Test a plain prompt before adding any tools.
Remote login or WebSocket checks fail
Confirm that the external URL exactly matches HERMES_DASHBOARD_PUBLIC_URL, including protocol and port. Check that the reverse proxy forwards WebSocket upgrades and that the authentication provider’s callback points to the same public address. A browser page that loads while Chat disconnects usually indicates a WebSocket, host-check, or proxy configuration problem rather than a model failure.
The wrong profile appears
Inspect the URL for a ?profile= parameter and select the intended profile in the dashboard. Remember that credentials, session databases, gateways, and cron schedulers are profile-specific; changing one profile does not repair another.
A safe operating checklist
- Install Hermes and verify the base
hermescommand. - Configure one provider and model.
- Install the web dependencies if Hermes requests them.
- Start with
hermes dashboardon loopback. - Send one ordinary Chat-tab prompt and confirm a response.
- Record which profile and model produced the successful test.
- Add optional gateways, skills, cron, voice, routing, or MCP features one at a time.
- For remote access, configure authentication and
HERMES_DASHBOARD_PUBLIC_URLbefore using a non-loopback host. - Limit network exposure with firewall or reverse-proxy rules.
- Re-test Chat and inspect status after every significant configuration change.
What a successful setup looks like
A complete local installation has a working hermes command, a configured provider, and a dashboard process listening at http://127.0.0.1:9119. The browser can open Chat, return a normal response, and show the session in the status page. A complete remote installation adds an explicit authentication provider, a matching public URL, and network controls before binding beyond loopback. Once those checks pass, the dashboard is ready for profile management and optional Hermes capabilities.
