To set up Biome for TypeScript, install it as a pinned project dependency, generate a shared configuration, run its checks locally, and connect it to your editor and CI. Biome supports TypeScript through its javascript configuration namespace, but it should not be treated as a feature-for-feature equivalent to Go tooling—or as a guaranteed drop-in replacement for every ESLint rule and Prettier setting.

1. Install Biome in your project

Run the command for your package manager from the project root. The Biome quick start uses exact-version installation so contributors and CI install the same release.

  • npm: npm i -D -E @biomejs/biome
  • pnpm: pnpm add -D -E @biomejs/biome
  • Bun: bun add -D -E @biomejs/biome
  • Yarn: yarn add -D -E @biomejs/biome
  • Deno: deno add -D npm:@biomejs/biome

Keep the package manager’s lockfile under version control. The exact pin and lockfile help make local and CI behavior consistent.

2. Create and review the configuration

Initialize Biome in the project root using your package manager’s equivalent of biome init. This creates a project configuration, usually biome.json or biome.jsonc. Biome can run without one, but a committed configuration gives the CLI and editor the same project settings. See Configure Biome.

TypeScript, JSX, and TSX settings are grouped under javascript; there is no separate top-level TypeScript configuration namespace. The generated configuration enables formatter, linter, and assist actions. Review those defaults against your team’s conventions rather than assuming they match an existing codebase.

For example, a configuration may enable recommended lint rules and organize imports. Use the configuration reference to adjust formatter and linter behavior. Its current guidance uses linter.rules.preset; the older linter.rules.recommended boolean is deprecated and is slated for removal in a future major version. Where possible, use the schema shipped with your installed Biome package so editor completion matches that release.

TypeScript Programming Language - Software Engineer & Coder T-Shirt
  • TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
  • TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Use files.includes to scope files across formatter, linter, and assist. Individual tools can also have narrower include settings. This is useful when a repository contains generated files or directories that should not be processed.

3. Check files and apply fixes

Run a non-writing check first:

npx biome check .

This reports formatting, lint, and assist diagnostics without applying changes. To apply formatting, safe lint fixes, and assist actions, run:

npx biome check --write .

Replace npx with your package manager’s runner if appropriate. A diagnostic without a safe automatic fix still needs a developer to review and resolve it; --write does not guarantee that every reported issue will be changed automatically.

4. Add Biome to CI

Add a CI step that runs Biome’s CI-oriented command from the repository root:

npx biome ci

Use the same pinned dependency and lockfile in CI as in local development. The quick start documents biome ci for CI checks; reserve biome check --write for a workflow where applying changes is intended, rather than using it as a silent substitute for checking committed code.

5. Configure your editor and format on save

Biome’s language server provides editor diagnostics, formatting, and assist actions. The editor setup guide lists maintained integrations for VS Code, Zed, and IntelliJ; Helix can connect directly, while integrations for other editors are community maintained. Because that guide is hosted on Biome’s next documentation site, check the instructions against the Biome release and editor version you use.

VS Code

  1. Install the Biome extension for VS Code.
  2. Open the project’s settings and select Biome as the default formatter for supported files.
  3. Enable format on save if you want files formatted whenever you save them.
  4. If you are migrating from ESLint and Prettier, disable or uninstall their editor extensions while transitioning so multiple formatters do not compete on save.

Keep the project configuration committed so the editor and command-line checks share the same rules.

6. Migrate from ESLint and Prettier deliberately

Biome provides migration guidance, but migration is not exact equivalence. The ESLint and Prettier migration guide notes that some ESLint rule options are not implemented or behave differently, and some shared configurations can fail if they expose cyclic references. The Prettier migration command requires Node.js to load JavaScript configuration files and does not support configuration written in JSON5, TOML, or YAML. Biome also recommends enabling VCS integration because ESLint and Prettier use VCS ignore files.

A practical transition is to create a migration branch, generate and inspect the Biome configuration, run checks on the project, and review any changed diagnostics or formatting. Decide which unsupported or different ESLint rules still matter to your team; you may choose to retain ESLint for those cases rather than remove it immediately. Compare rule coverage, formatting behavior, migration effort, editor and CI setup, and the value of a simpler single-tool workflow. The documented differences do not establish that one choice is universally better.
