Start with the speakers at matching heights, spaced symmetrically around your main seat, then fine-tune their distance and inward angle by listening to familiar dialogue and music. The goal is a stable phantom center—voices seem to come from between the speakers—alongside controlled bass and a stereo image that suits the number of seats you use.

1. Choose a main seat and create a symmetrical starting layout

Pick the seat where you most want dialogue and music to sound right. Place the left and right speakers at equal distances from it, with similar spacing from side walls and nearby objects. This symmetry gives centered vocals and other sounds in a stereo recording a better chance of forming a stable phantom center: a perceived center image, not a physical center speaker.

A roughly equilateral triangle—speaker-to-speaker spacing close to the distance from either speaker to your seat—is a useful starting point, not a rule. Cambridge Audio acoustics head Ollie Marshall advises beginning with a slightly narrower triangle: “The distance you sit from the speakers should be greater than the distance between them. Don’t jump straight to equilateral triangle, start with a slightly narrower triangle.” Treat that as room- and preference-dependent guidance. If your room cannot fit the triangle, place the speakers as symmetrically as you can and tune from there.

2. Match speaker height and keep the sound path clear

When seated, aim for the tweeters—the small drivers that reproduce higher frequencies—to be around ear height. Keep the two speakers at matching heights and avoid placing objects directly between them and your seat. Teufel gives approximately 91–106 cm as a seated tweeter-height recommendation; your seat, speaker design, and room may call for a different arrangement.

If bookshelf speakers sit too low on a desk or cabinet, stands can raise them and give you more placement freedom. Cambridge Audio also notes that stands can separate speakers from furniture that rattles. Check that any stand has a suitable height, footprint, and load capacity, and account for the floor space it occupies.

3. Adjust wall and corner placement to control bass

Nearby walls and corners can reinforce bass, while hard, bare surfaces can make reflections more noticeable. There is no single wall distance that works for every speaker and room: manufacturers give different placement advice, and the result depends on the room as well as the speaker. As a first trial, leave some space around each speaker where practical, keep their relationships to the room similar, and avoid pushing one speaker into a corner while the other has open space.

4. Tune toe-in for focus or a wider listening area

Toe-in means turning each speaker slightly inward toward the listening area. Begin with a modest angle and compare it with the speakers aimed more straight ahead. More toe-in can sharpen the center image at the main seat, but may make the best listening area narrower. Less toe-in can make the sound more even across several seats.

Cambridge Audio’s Ollie Marshall says that, in his experience, “Usually 10 to 15 degrees is about right,” while cautioning against pointing speakers directly at the listener or straight forward. Teufel separately recommends about 15 degrees as a starting point. These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal measurements. Speaker directivity differs, so follow model-specific instructions in your speaker manual if provided. DALI explains that toe-in effects vary with speaker design and listening position.

5. Compare placements with familiar dialogue and music

Change one variable at a time: for example, adjust spacing first, listen, and only then alter toe-in. Move speakers by a few centimeters, note the change, and repeat with familiar material at your intended seat. A track with a centered vocal and a scene with clear speech can help reveal whether the image is stable.

  • Width and focus: Does the stereo stage feel spacious without losing a solid center?

Cambridge Audio recommends marking settled speaker positions with masking tape. This makes it easier to compare a new placement with the previous one rather than relying on memory.

Adjustment What to compare Likely trade-off
Speaker spacing and seat distance Centered voices and overall stage shape A layout that works in one room may not fit another; start symmetrically and adjust by listening.
Toe-in Center-image focus and coverage away from the main seat More toe-in can favor a focused hotspot; less can favor shared listening.
Distance from walls or corners Bass fullness versus boom More open placement may not be possible in a compact room; keep left/right conditions as similar as practical.

Cambridge Audio describes a trade-off between full, even bass and a convincing stereo image. Decide which arrangement best serves your listening: one optimized seat, or a wider area shared by several people.

6. Address reflections and vibration before buying treatment

If the room sounds reflective, first try repositioning speakers, clearing obstructions, and using ordinary soft furnishings such as rugs or curtains. These can help with reflections, but they are not a guaranteed fix for every acoustic problem.

For speakers on a desk or shelf, a foam or similar absorptive layer underneath may reduce resonance from the surface. Check that it fits the speaker’s size and weight. If placement changes and ordinary furnishings do not resolve a persistent issue, dedicated absorbers or bass traps are possible next steps; the sources do not establish a universal treatment plan.
