To set up Starlink Roam, place the terminal where it has a clear view of the sky, connect the power supplied with your kit, follow any alignment prompts in the Starlink app, and join its Wi-Fi network. Then check your account separately: a working terminal does not guarantee that your Roam plan permits service at your destination.
1. Choose a location with an open view of the sky
Install the Starlink app and use its obstruction tool to check a potential spot before settling on it. Trees, poles, roofs and other obstructions can interrupt the terminal’s view of satellites. If ground level is obstructed, consider a higher location and a mount suitable for your hardware.
For camping or vehicle use, assess the actual place where you will set up; a clear view from one spot does not establish that another spot nearby is clear. Starlink’s general setup guide, Standard setup guide and Mini setup guide provide model-specific setup information.

2. Connect the kit and wait for the terminal
Use the cable and power supply included with your exact kit, following that model’s guide rather than assuming every Starlink terminal has the same connections or power requirements. For Mini, Starlink’s guide describes connecting the included DC cable to the terminal and power supply, then connecting the supply to an outlet.

After power is connected, allow the terminal time to establish a connection. Starlink says this typically happens within a few minutes; an initial setup may also involve a software download.
3. Follow the alignment prompt for your hardware
Alignment behavior varies by model. Standard Actuated hardware levels itself, and Starlink’s support guidance says not to adjust it manually. Standard and Mini may instead prompt you to use the app’s alignment tool. Follow the prompt shown for your terminal.

4. Join Starlink Wi-Fi and check the app
- On your phone or computer, open the Wi-Fi settings and connect to the network named STARLINK.
- Open the Starlink app to check the terminal’s status and configure available settings.
- If your model’s guide calls for it, set a network name and password. Starlink’s Standard Circular guide says this is optional but recommended for that model; its default network is not password-protected until configured. Check your own router’s guide rather than applying that legacy/model-specific instruction to every kit.
5. Confirm that the account and destination qualify for Roam
Getting the terminal online and being allowed to use Roam at a particular destination are separate matters. Roam is intended for travel and remote use, including use with vehicles or boats, but availability, plan terms and local rules govern where and how service can be used. Check the plan displayed in your Starlink account for your country and intended use, and consult Starlink’s Roam plan page for current plan details.

For most account types, Starlink says Travel Registration is required when using service outside the registered home country. Its help page directs customers to My Account → Settings → Registration Requirements → Add Travel Plans; destination-specific information may be requested. Registration alone does not guarantee service: plan eligibility, market availability and local rules still apply. Check the Travel Registration guidance before relying on service abroad.
In-motion support is not blanket permission to use Starlink while moving. Restrictions vary by country and by land or water use, so check the current plan terms for your intended route.

If Starlink Roam will not connect
- Check the app for alerts, outages and obstruction warnings.
- Confirm the terminal has power, cables are seated correctly and the hardware appears undamaged.
- Use the app’s Offline status instructions and the guide for your specific model; connection and troubleshooting steps differ between hardware.
- For a Mini, consult its guide for power cycling and reset instructions. Treat a factory reset as a later step, and follow the model-specific directions because reset behavior varies.
If the kit was purchased through a retailer or another third party, account activation may also be required. Starlink’s activation flow asks for the kit identifier and account, address, plan and billing details. The process has limits, including cases where hardware is already associated with another account and some account or market restrictions.
