To get useful drive-failure alerts, configure three things: SMART monitoring that can reach the physical drive, a notification route you actually check, and a recurring self-test schedule that fits your storage workload. On Linux, smartd from smartmontools can monitor drives and send alerts; on a NAS, its built-in drive-health tools are usually the better place to configure polling and notifications.

What SMART monitoring does—and what it does not

SMART monitoring combines drive-reported health information with background polling. A scheduled self-test is a separate, optional diagnostic: the drive runs its own test and reports the result. A dashboard may show health information without sending notifications, so check alert routing separately.

SMART warnings are signals, not a guarantee of advance notice before every failure. A “PASSED” status does not prove a drive is safe, and there is no universal raw-attribute cutoff that applies to every model. Keep independent backups, and investigate warnings or concerning trends promptly.

Choose the monitoring path that can see your drives

Use the platform that has access to the physical disks and that you will maintain. A NAS may already poll SMART data and route alerts. A hardware RAID controller may manage drive health separately, while some USB enclosures or controller paths may not pass SMART commands through at all.

  • Hardware RAID: confirm which component monitors predictive failures. Avoid duplicate or conflicting management paths; follow the NAS and controller guidance for your release and configuration.

Set up smartd on Linux

Exact package and service names vary by distribution and installed smartmontools version. Consult the installed smartd.conf man page before applying directives. The Debian unstable manual describes the configuration and test-email behavior; its instructions should not be assumed to match every packaged version. Debian smartd.conf(5).

  1. Install smartmontools. Use your distribution’s package manager and package instructions.
  2. Identify the disks and check SMART access. Confirm that SMART commands reach each intended drive through its controller or USB bridge. Do not assume an enclosure exposes SMART. Avoid relying on a transient name such as /dev/sdX as a durable identity; device names can change.
  3. Configure the intended devices. Edit smartd.conf using the syntax documented for your installed version. A broad scan can be convenient, but explicit device entries make it easier to review which drives receive which policy.
  4. Set up alert delivery. The -m directive supplies an email recipient and is used with alert directives such as -a or specific alert switches. By default, smartd uses the system mail command; configure a working mail transport or a custom delivery executable before relying on email. A configured recipient alone does not make mail delivery work.
  5. Enable and start the daemon. Use your distribution’s documented service name and service-management commands. Confirm that the service remains active and review its logs for configuration or delivery errors.
  6. Send a test message. Temporarily add the documented -M test directive alongside -m, then restart smartd using your distribution’s procedure. The Debian manual says this sends one test email at startup. Confirm that the message reaches the intended inbox; then remove -M test and restart the service so it does not keep sending startup tests. See the smartd.conf manual and DigiKey’s 2026 Linux NAS tutorial for the test-message flow.

smartd can report health-status changes, new errors, self-test events, selected attribute changes, or failed SMART commands, depending on the configured directives. Warning and reminder behavior depends on the configuration and persistence settings. Verify the installed manual’s details rather than copying a configuration example without checking what it monitors.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

TrueNAS SCALE

TrueNAS SCALE middleware polls SMART data for each drive. Higher-priority alerts can appear in the alerts panel and use configured services such as email or SNMP. The documentation describes SMART-stat alerts when a drive-reported diagnostic value crosses a failure threshold, as well as temperature alerts relative to the manufacturer’s rated maximum. Use the Drive Health Management and alert-service interface documented for your installed release: TrueNAS SCALE documentation.

TrueNAS CORE 13.3

In the TrueNAS CORE 13.3 documentation, automatic SMART testing is configured under Tasks > S.M.A.R.T. Tests, results are available under Storage > Disks, and the SMART service must be enabled for automatic tests. The documentation also describes running tests manually and cautions that tests can take disks offline. Do not schedule them to overlap a scrub or resilver. If a RAID disk controller monitors drives separately and reports predictive failure, the guide says to disable the SMART service; confirm that advice against your actual controller and release. Synology DSM 7

Synology’s DSM 7 notification guide lists email, mobile-device notifications, browser push, and application webhooks for selected events. The available guide does not establish identical SMART event labels or selection steps for every DSM build. In the Control Panel, follow the notification settings for your installed release, confirm that the relevant drive-health event is selected, and choose a destination you monitor. Schedule tests without disrupting storage maintenance

Continuous polling and self-tests serve different purposes: polling checks the health information the drive reports, while a self-test asks the drive to perform a diagnostic procedure. Test types and availability vary by drive and interface. A test schedule should account for the expected duration and other storage work, not just repeat at an arbitrary interval.

Verify alerts and respond to warnings

After configuring monitoring, verify the full notification route—not just that a setting is enabled. For smartd, use its documented test-email mode and confirm receipt before removing that temporary setting. For a NAS, use its available test or notification mechanism if the release provides one, and confirm delivery to the selected email, device, browser, or webhook destination. If a test does not arrive, check the destination, service configuration, mail transport or notification integration, and system logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a drive reports a warning, a self-test fails, or health information shows a concerning trend, first confirm that current backups are usable. Review the full drive report and the manufacturer’s guidance; do not infer a diagnosis from one raw attribute number alone. Then assess the failure evidence and the storage system’s redundancy state before planning replacement or other recovery steps.
