ROCKNIX lists the Anbernic RG DS and RG DS Plus as supported devices in its October 1, 2026 release. That makes it a software option worth considering, but it does not guarantee flawless emulation: the listing confirms an available device-specific image, not that every game, control, or dual-screen feature works perfectly.
Is ROCKNIX compatible with the Anbernic RG DS?
ROCKNIX’s October 1, 2026 release lists both the Anbernic RG DS and RG DS Plus under the image named ROCKNIX-RK3566.aarch64-20261001-Specific.img.gz. Choose the image by the device names in the current release listing, rather than by trying to infer compatibility from the image-family label alone. The listing explicitly includes the RG DS even though Anbernic specifies an RK3568 processor in the handheld. Check the current ROCKNIX release and instructions before downloading, because release details can change.
Compatibility at the device-image level is not the same as a guarantee about individual games. The available evidence does not establish that every title, emulator, control mapping, display mode, or feature works as intended, and it does not provide controlled ROCKNIX performance tests or a title-by-title comparison. Check the specific games and functions you care about on the build you plan to use.
What the RG DS hardware means for emulation
Anbernic specifies two 4-inch IPS touch displays, each at 640×480, a capacitive stylus, an RK3568 processor, an ARM G52 2EE GPU, and 3+32GB memory and storage. These specifications describe the hardware; they do not demonstrate how a particular game performs under ROCKNIX. Anbernic also states a 4000mAh battery and up to six hours of battery life, but that is a manufacturer claim—not a measured result for ROCKNIX. See Anbernic’s RG DS specifications.

The two touchscreens make orientation, layout, and touch behavior especially relevant setup details. A community RG DS guide recommends a vertical screen orientation and an even screen layout. Treat those as community setup suggestions, not universal or official ROCKNIX defaults; confirm them against the current release and your installed build. Consult ROCKNIX’s project documentation as well as the guide.
How to install ROCKNIX on the RG DS
The release instructions describe downloading the suitable image, decompressing it, writing it to an SD card with an imaging tool, and booting the handheld from the prepared card. The exact steps and supported tools may change, so use the current release page as the authority for your build.

- Find the current device-specific image. Open the ROCKNIX releases page and confirm that the release listing names Anbernic RG DS or RG DS Plus. Do not select a generic image solely because its filename or family label seems to match the processor.
- Download and decompress the image. Follow the release page’s instructions for the selected build. The listed image is compressed, so prepare it as directed before writing it.
- Write the image to an SD card. Use an imaging tool supported by the current instructions. The sources establish an SD-card-based workflow but do not establish a required capacity, speed class, brand, or exact model.
- Boot the handheld from the prepared card. Follow the release documentation for startup and any first-boot steps; do not assume that menu names or procedures remain unchanged between releases.
- Check the dual-screen setup you need. If orientation, layout, or touch input is not right, consult current build documentation. The vertical orientation and even layout described in the community RG DS guide are suggestions to verify, not guaranteed settings.
- Test your own games and controls. Try the titles and dual-screen interactions that matter to you, and adjust configuration only where the current build offers the relevant options. Image availability alone cannot predict those results.
ROCKNIX versus Anbernic firmware
ROCKNIX is not the only Linux option for the RG DS. Anbernic’s firmware download page lists an RG DS Linux build labeled RGDS-LINUX-V1.0-260513, as well as Android firmware. Check Anbernic’s firmware downloads for the available files.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe sources establish that these choices exist, but they do not provide an apples-to-apples comparison of ROCKNIX, Anbernic’s Linux build, and Android. There is no supported basis here for ranking them on game compatibility, speed, screen behavior, setup effort, library features, sleep or power behavior, or update support. If those factors will determine your choice, look for current, build-specific evidence for the games and features you use rather than treating one firmware’s availability as proof of better performance.
