To limit a child’s exposure to harmful online content, set controls in the places they use the internet: their account, device, apps and services, and home network. These controls manage access; none of the cited guidance establishes that one filter catches everything. Start with the child’s actual devices and accounts, configure each relevant layer, then check the settings on the child’s profile.

Choose what you want to limit

Before changing settings, list the child’s phones, tablets, computers, consoles, browsers, and frequently used services. Decide which boundaries matter for your family, such as age-inappropriate websites or media, app downloads, online contact, or device use at particular times. The right settings depend on the child’s age and circumstances.

Controls have different scopes: a website filter may apply on one device, a service setting may apply only within that service, and a broadband filter may cover devices connected to the home network. That is why a practical setup uses the controls relevant to the child’s accounts and devices rather than assuming one setting covers every route online. UK government guidance describes parental controls as a way to manage internet access and filter inappropriate or harmful content: Parental controls.

Set up the child’s account and family group

Where available, use a child-specific account connected to the responsible adult or family group. This gives the platform a way to associate its family settings with the child’s account.

  • Google: Use Family Link and manage the child’s Google Account through the family group. Google says the parent needs their Google Account password to configure or change controls. For installing the parent app, Google lists Android 6.0 or later, iOS 16 or later, or a compatible Chromebook; check its current requirements and setup flow at Google’s Family Link help page.

Apply limits on the devices the child uses

iPhone or iPad

Apple’s UK guide gives this route for website settings on a child’s device: Settings > Family > child’s name > Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Filtering under Websites. The guide lists “Limit Adult Websites” and “Ask to Browse”; it also describes “Approved Websites Only” as the setting for Ask to Browse. Menu availability and defaults can depend on software version, region, and the child’s age, so use the current instructions for the device in front of you: Apple Support UK.

Windows, Xbox, and Microsoft family settings

Microsoft’s setup guidance starts with a Microsoft family group: add family members, apply restrictions, and connect supported devices for activity reporting. Family Safety describes screen-time limits and app and website blocking in supported contexts. Xbox privacy and online-safety settings are managed in a separate settings area, so confirm which controls apply to the child’s specific device and browser before relying on them. Follow Microsoft’s Family Safety setup guide.

Android and Google accounts

Use Family Link’s current setup and control flow for the child’s Google Account. The available instructions establish the parent-app compatibility requirements and the need for the parent’s password, but they do not establish a feature-by-feature filtering result for every Android device. Check what the current interface offers for the child’s account rather than assuming a particular filter is enabled: Google Family Link help.

Turn on controls inside the services the child uses

YouTube

If supervised YouTube access is appropriate for your family, YouTube says a parent can set up a supervised child account for a child under 13 or the relevant age in their country or region. During setup, the parent chooses a content setting that limits the videos and music the child can access. This setting is specific to YouTube; it does not filter other video services or the browser generally. See YouTube’s supervised-account instructions.

Other apps, services, and consoles

Check the family, privacy, and content settings in each service the child regularly uses. Controls offered by one app or console do not automatically apply to other apps or devices. The UK government’s guidance directs families to device and service providers for their specific instructions: UK government guidance on parental controls.

Add home broadband filtering, knowing where it stops

Your broadband provider or existing router may offer filtering for devices using the home connection. Check what it blocks and which connected devices it covers before enabling it; buying a new router is not automatically necessary if the current service already offers suitable settings.

A home-network filter does not follow a child onto other connections. The NSPCC warns that controls configured on a device and home broadband will not work when the child switches to mobile data, public Wi-Fi, or someone else’s connection. Pair network filtering with account, device, and service controls: NSPCC guidance on parental controls.

Check the setup on the child’s actual profile

  1. Sign in to the child’s account on each device and service where you configured restrictions.
  2. Check the relevant setting in the browser or app the child actually uses, not only in a parent dashboard.
  3. Confirm that the home-network filter applies while the device is connected to the household Wi-Fi.
  4. Repeat the check when the child gets a new device, account, browser, or service, or starts using a different connection.

These checks matter because the controls described by Apple, Google, YouTube, Microsoft, and the NSPCC apply in different places. A setting that is active in one account or network should not be assumed to cover another.

Keep future policy changes separate from settings available now

A UK government fact sheet updated 18 September 2026 describes proposed online-safety measures with an intended implementation in Spring 2027. Those are planned measures, not a parental-control feature already in force. See the government fact sheet for its current status.
