Start with the device your child uses: on an iPhone or iPad, use Apple Screen Time to block purchases or Family Sharing’s Ask to Buy to review eligible requests. On Android or a Chromebook, use Google Family Link and Google Play purchase approvals. A block stops the action covered by that setting; an approval setting lets you review a request before a covered download or purchase goes through.
Choose the controls for your child’s device

Use the account-based option that matches the child’s device. Apple’s family controls depend on Family Sharing and the child’s Apple Account; Google’s Family Link controls depend on a supervised Google Account and a supported device. Google lists Android 6.0 or later and ChromeOS 71 or later as child-device baselines. Google’s Family Link device and account guidance explains supported devices and limits. Family Link does not supervise iPhones, iPads, or non-Chromebook computers.
iPhone or iPad: block purchases or require approval
Require approval with Ask to Buy
Ask to Buy is the request-and-review option for eligible child downloads and purchases. An organizer or parent/guardian can configure it from their own Apple device:

- Open Settings > Family.
- Tap the child’s name.
- Tap Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy.
- Turn on Require Purchase Approval.
A request may be for an App Store app download or an in-app purchase. If you approve it, the item downloads to the child’s device. The family needs Family Sharing set up, the child must use their own Apple Account in the group, and devices should be updated so settings can sync. Ask to Buy does not request approval when a child redownloads their own previous purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code. Availability and whether it can be switched off can also depend on the child’s country or region and age; Apple says it may be on by default and unavailable to switch off for a child under 18 in some circumstances.
Block in-app purchases with Screen Time
For a hard block on in-app purchases, first turn on Screen Time, then use the current iPhone or iPad settings path:

- Open Settings > Screen Time and enable Screen Time if it is not already on.
- Go to Apps & Websites > App Store > In-app Purchases.
- Select Blocked.
Apple’s current guidance emphasizes that Screen Time must be on before you can prevent Apple in-app purchases. Menu labels can vary across software releases; consult Apple’s Screen Time purchase-control steps if your device shows different labels.

Apple also documents app installation and deletion restrictions within Screen Time’s content and privacy controls. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases, then choose the restrictions for installing or deleting apps. The exact labels can differ by iOS or iPadOS version; Apple’s App Store content and purchase restrictions guide provides the current instructions.

Android or Chromebook: use Family Link and Google Play approvals
Set purchase approval in Google Play
The family manager or a parent managing a supervised child account can choose which Google Play purchases require approval. Google documents these routes; the labels may vary by interface:
- In the Play Store: open your profile, then go to Settings > Family > Manage family members. Select the child, tap Purchase approvals, and choose the purchase type.
- In Family Link: select the child, then open Controls > Google Play > Require approval for.
Depending on the interface, approval choices include all content, paid content, in-app purchases, or never/no approval. The options determine which Play transactions prompt you; select the scope that fits your needs. See Google Play’s purchase-approval instructions for current controls.

Manage app downloads and content
Family Link lets a parent manage, allow, or block a child’s apps and restrict mature content on Google Play. For setup and supported devices, use Google’s Family Link overview. If you are configuring a shared Android device without Family Link, Google Play’s local parental controls can filter downloads or purchases by maturity rating. Those restrictions apply only on the Android device where enabled, and they do not prevent restricted content from appearing in search results or through a direct link. Google Play approval is limited to Google Play billing
Google Play purchase approval settings cover transactions made through Google Play billing. If an app developer offers an alternative in-app payment system, the payment itself is outside Google Play’s purchase controls and authentication. Family Link approval for downloading an app can still apply, but it does not bring that separate payment method under Play purchase approval. Google explains this boundary in its alternative billing guidance.
Confirm account, device, and purchase channel
If a setting is missing or a request does not appear, check that the child is using the intended family account, the device and operating system meet the feature’s requirements, and the family manager or parent has the right role. Then identify where the download or payment is being processed: App Store or Apple services, Google Play billing, or a developer’s separate payment system. Each control applies only within its stated scope.
