For the best sound from new headphones, start with a comfortable, secure fit, pair them with your phone or computer, and listen at the default settings before making small adjustments. Earbud tips and over-ear cushion position can affect what you hear; pairing steps and optional app features depend on the model.
1. Get the fit right before changing settings
Over-ear headphones
Check that the left and right cups are on the correct ears. Adjust the sliders so each cushion fully covers your ear, and position the headband so it rests gently on top of your head. Sony’s fit guidance recommends this positioning and cautions against forcing or twisting the headset while adjusting it.
Earbuds
Try the included tip sizes until the earbuds feel secure and form a stable seal. A loose fit can change the sound and reduce isolation. JBL’s official fit guidance warns that a poor in-ear seal can make headphones sound thin, with less bass, and block unwanted sound less effectively. If none of the included tips gives a stable fit, check whether replacement tips are available for your exact model; do not assume tips are interchangeable.

2. Pair the headphones with your device
- Put the headphones into Bluetooth pairing mode using the instructions for your specific model.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, computer, or TV you want to use.
- Select the headphone name from the available devices and wait for the connection confirmation.
- If the headphones connect but you hear no audio, check that they are selected as the device’s audio output.
The general process is to select the headphones in the source device’s Bluetooth settings, but the button sequence for pairing varies. See the included guide or the manufacturer’s support page for your model. Sony provides pairing guidance organized by headphone type and source device. For the Bose products covered by its pairing instructions, pairing can be done through the device’s Bluetooth settings.

3. Decide whether to use the companion app
You do not always need a manufacturer app to pair headphones. For the Bose products covered by its pairing page, direct Bluetooth pairing is available; the app adds model-specific controls. Bose lists features such as EQ, CustomTune sound calibration, noise-cancellation or aware modes, touch-control customization, and software updates for the products described there. Feature availability depends on the headphone model, so check the app’s compatibility information before relying on a particular control.
If you install an app, use the manufacturer’s official app and follow its prompts to connect your model. If you only want a basic Bluetooth connection, try pairing through your device settings first.

4. Listen at default settings, then adjust if you want
Play a familiar, well-recorded track at a comfortable volume before changing EQ or other sound controls. This gives you a useful starting point for deciding whether you actually want a different sound.

5. Keep the volume comfortable
Listen at a comfortable, moderate volume. Bose’s Hearphones safety and use instructions give this advice for that product family. This guidance does not specify a universal numeric volume limit for all headphones.

- Confirm that the headphones show as connected to the intended phone, computer, or TV.
- Check the source device’s audio-output setting and select the headphones if another output is active.
- Consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for your exact model if the problem continues.
Pairing, reset, and troubleshooting steps are product-specific, so avoid trying a generic reset sequence that may not apply to your headphones.
