Set up Meta Muse around one household task, connect only the service that task needs, and start with read access. Add write access only when Muse must change something, and keep approval on for consequential actions such as sending a message or making a purchase. A connection lets Muse work with a service; it does not mean every action should be approved automatically.
What Meta Muse can do—and what a family setup means
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent that can browse, use connected apps, work through multi-step tasks, and continue work in the background. Its examples include checking calendars, planning trips, preparing dinner menus, building grocery lists, and remembering dietary restrictions. That makes it usable for household tasks, but does not establish a shared family account, separate roles for family members, or child-account controls. This guide assumes one adult is configuring Muse for household use. Meta’s launch announcement
Muse was described at launch as rolling out on iOS, Android, and the web, for people in the United States who are at least 18. These are launch-era availability details, not a guarantee of current eligibility: check the app and local terms where you live. Associated Press launch coverage
Set up Muse one task at a time
- Pick a narrow, low-risk job. Start with something specific, such as checking calendar availability or drafting a meal plan from a recipe. Avoid an open-ended request like “manage our family life”; it gives you no clear way to judge what data or permissions the task actually needs.
- Connect only the relevant service. If the task is calendar planning, connect the calendar—not email, social accounts, or other household services just because they are available. Meta says people choose which apps to connect and can later change access or disconnect a service. Meta’s launch announcement
- Start with read access. For checking availability or summarizing information, Muse should not need permission to change the account. Meta says its system separates read and write access where the underlying service supports that distinction; the exact controls vary by connector. Meta AI Research’s technical explanation
- Allow a write only for a task that needs one. Creating an event, changing information, or sending something requires more than reading. Grant the narrowest available write permission for that purpose, rather than treating a connection as blanket permission to act.
- Keep approval on for consequential actions. Review the details before approving an action such as sending a message, making a purchase, or sharing information. Meta’s connector guidance says sensitive writes require approval each time and cannot be set to “Always allow.” Meta connector permission guidelines
- Review the trial, then clean up. Check Muse’s activity and permission settings after the first task. Revoke access that is no longer needed. Review stored files and memory, edit or download them if needed, and ask Muse to forget information you do not want retained. Meta’s launch announcement
Understand what each permission means
Meta’s connector guidance groups actions into three categories. For platform connector reads and writes, the default is to ask on first use. Depending on the action, the available choices include allowing once, allowing eligible actions always, or denying. An “Always allow” choice can be revoked later.

| Action type | What it does | Approval behavior described by Meta |
|---|---|---|
| Read | Retrieves information without changing data or account state. | Asks on first use by default; eligible actions can be allowed once, allowed always, or denied. |
| Write | Changes data or acts on your behalf. | Asks on first use by default; eligible actions can be allowed once, allowed always, or denied. |
| Sensitive write | Takes a consequential or potentially irreversible action, such as making a purchase or sending an email. | Asks every time; the choices are allow once or deny. It cannot be set to “Always allow.” |
These are Meta’s stated platform rules; the prompts and available permission choices may depend on the connector. Treat the approval screen in the current app as the operational authority. Connecting an account and approving a particular action are separate decisions. Meta connector permission guidelines
What the safeguards do—and do not—establish
Meta says its Sentinel system evaluates connector requests against the policy set by the user and decides whether to allow, deny, or ask for approval. Meta also says it can limit actions more precisely than broad OAuth permission groups where supported. These are descriptions of Meta’s design, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that an agent cannot make a mistake. Meta AI Research’s technical explanation

Meta AI Research acknowledges, “Like any AI system, Muse will sometimes make mistakes.” It also describes prompt injection as an open problem. Human approval and other defenses can reduce risk, but they do not remove the need to supervise tasks. A written instruction such as “never send without asking” is not a substitute for checking the actual permission settings. Meta AI Research’s technical explanation

Know how Muse data is handled
Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems. Separately, sanitized conversation and tool-use trajectories may be used to train model checkpoints unless you opt out in Muse settings. These statements concern different uses of data, so check the training setting rather than assuming the advertising statement also opts you out of training. Meta AI Research’s technical explanation

Meta says users can inspect, edit, and download files and memory stored in the virtual machine (VM), and can tell Muse to forget particular information. Meta may access VM data when necessary to support, secure, or operate the service. The same sources describe Muse Confidential VM as a future capability intended to cryptographically prevent Meta from accessing the VM; they do not establish it as a currently available setting. When to expand or remove access
- Stay read-only if Muse is only checking, searching, or summarizing information.
- Add a write permission only when a specific task requires a change, and only if the connector offers a suitably narrow control.
- Keep sensitive actions approval-based and inspect the recipient, content, or transaction before confirming.
- Revoke a connection when the task is finished or the service no longer needs to be available to Muse.
- Check memory and training choices if household information should not remain in stored files or be used for model training.
