You can enable Meta’s built-in AI agent for WhatsApp Business through a guided QR-code setup—but WhatsApp does not publish a setup-time guarantee, and the feature is not available to every business. If you see Tools > AI agent in the WhatsApp Business app, you can begin there. If you mean a custom bot, you’ll need a separate Cloud API or agent-platform setup instead.
What “build an AI agent” means on WhatsApp
There are two different routes, and only one is a guided in-app feature:
- Meta Business Agent: Meta’s built-in Business AI for eligible WhatsApp Business accounts. It can answer customer questions using business information and catalog details, with the owner able to adjust replies, take over, or turn the feature off. Meta’s announcement describes the rollout for eligible small and medium businesses in India; availability elsewhere should not be assumed. Meta’s announcement
- Custom agent: A bot or workflow you build or configure using the WhatsApp Cloud API or a platform such as Microsoft Copilot Studio. This is a developer or platform route, not the same as switching on Meta’s built-in feature.
Meta’s guided setup instructions do not state that setup takes less than a minute. One customer testimonial in Meta’s announcement says Business AI learned the business over “within a few hours,” which is an individual account, not a general performance measure.

How to enable Meta Business Agent in WhatsApp Business
- Open the WhatsApp Business app and go to Tools > AI agent. If the option is not present, your account may not have access yet.
- Continue through the guided setup to display the QR code.
- Scan the QR code using the mobile device running WhatsApp Business. WhatsApp says you may need to log in again.
- Continue and accept the setup on your device.
- Provide or review information about your business so the agent has relevant details to draw on, then choose which conversations it may answer.
WhatsApp’s Meta Business Agent setup guidance describes this flow. The QR process is a setup path, not evidence of a universal completion time.

Check access, reply scope, and handoff controls
Availability depends on rollout and eligibility
Meta says access is limited and rolling out gradually. Availability can depend on country, business eligibility, and language support; language support is determined by the business phone number and is incomplete. If the feature is missing, a waitlist does not promise access or an arrival date. Check the current in-app option and WhatsApp’s availability and setup details.
Choose which chats the agent can answer
WhatsApp’s controls let a business choose whether AI replies are enabled for new one-to-one chats, exclude particular contacts, include chats that came from ads, or pause learning. Set the scope to match the conversations you actually want automated rather than assuming the agent will answer every incoming message.

Take over conversations when needed
Meta says business owners can take over, adjust the agent, or turn it off. WhatsApp also says an ongoing chat may need seven days of inactivity before the agent responds again, unless replies are restarted. That timing is a condition in WhatsApp’s Business Agent guidance, not a general rule for all WhatsApp chats.
When a custom WhatsApp agent makes more sense
Choose the Cloud API or an agent platform if you need custom workflows, integrations with business systems, or more control over how the bot works. WhatsApp describes its Cloud API as a way for business messaging systems to connect customers with agents or bots. Getting started requires a Meta business portfolio, a WhatsApp Business Account, and a business phone number; it is not a one-tap replacement for the in-app agent. Microsoft documents a separate process for publishing a Copilot Studio agent to WhatsApp. That route involves configuring an agent and its WhatsApp channel; it should not be described as a sub-minute setup. See Microsoft’s Copilot Studio WhatsApp publishing guide.

WhatsApp says conversations with third-party agents are not considered end-to-end encrypted, because they are managed by a Meta service on the agent’s behalf. WhatsApp also says a user can connect up to five third-party agents. These statements concern third-party-agent conversations; they do not describe ordinary person-to-person WhatsApp chats.
