Place lumbar support in the small hollow of your lower back so it follows your natural inward curve, then sit fully back against the chair. Adjust the support, seat height and foot position until you can work without pressure or forced arching. If the support makes symptoms worse, reposition it or remove it; do not try to tolerate painful pressure.

A rolled towel or removable cushion can provide support when a chair has none. Lumbar support is one part of an ergonomic setup, not a treatment or guarantee against back pain. The guidance below is based on recommendations from OSHA, CDC/NIOSH and Mayo Clinic.

Where should lumbar support sit?

Lumbar support belongs at the small of your back, where the spine naturally curves inward above the pelvis. Its outward curve should fill that hollow rather than push your entire torso forward. OSHA describes a backrest that conforms to the spine’s natural curves and a height-adjustable lumbar support that can fit the lower back. See OSHA’s chair guidance.

There is no single correct height, thickness, firmness or shape for every person. Your pelvis, torso length, chair depth and the support’s design all change the fit. Use comfort and neutral alignment as the test: you should be able to sit back against the chair without feeling a hard ridge, excessive arching or pressure that makes you shift away.

Why a support can make pain worse

A lumbar device can be uncomfortable when it sits too high, is too thick, or is used while the chair is forcing you to lean forward. A support positioned in the middle of the back can push the ribs and shoulders forward; one placed low on the pelvis may feel like a belt and fail to support the lumbar curve. A deep cushion can also reduce the usable seat depth, leaving your knees too close to the front edge.

These problems are fit issues, not evidence that you need to brace your back more firmly. If discomfort increases after adding support, change its position or remove it and reassess the chair and desk. Persistent or worsening pain needs individualized medical advice; chair adjustments cannot diagnose its cause.

Step-by-step: set up lumbar support safely

  1. Start with the chair back. Sit all the way back so your pelvis and back contact the backrest. Do not perch on the front edge while testing the support. A backrest should follow the natural curves of your spine rather than leave a large unsupported gap.
  2. Find the small of your back. Locate the inward curve just above your belt line. The center of the chair’s lumbar pad, or the thickest part of a towel or cushion, should meet that area. If the pad is height-adjustable, move it in small increments while remaining seated.
  3. Use only as much projection as you need. The support should fill the hollow, not create a new, exaggerated arch. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your head over your torso. If you have to lean forward to avoid the pad, it is too prominent or too high.
  4. Check the contact while working. Place your hands on the keyboard or desk and look for a comfortable reach. You should be able to maintain contact with the backrest without bracing your arms or sliding forward. Test the position for several minutes, then make one small adjustment at a time.
  5. Secure a temporary support. For a chair with no lumbar feature, OSHA says a rolled-up towel or removable back-support cushion can temporarily provide support and help maintain the spine’s natural curve. CDC/NIOSH’s 2020 work-from-home guidance also describes making a lumbar roll for an ordinary chair. Place the roll in the hollow of the back and keep it from slipping, but do not tie it so tightly that it restricts movement.
  6. Set the seat height after the back support. Lower or raise the chair so your feet rest flat on the floor. OSHA and Mayo Clinic advise using a footrest when the chair cannot be lowered without creating another workstation-height problem. Aim for thighs roughly parallel to the floor, as described by Mayo Clinic’s office-ergonomics guide.
  7. Recheck the support in your normal task position. Type, read and use a mouse rather than judging the chair while sitting still. If the pad presses, causes tingling, increases aching or makes you brace, move it, reduce its thickness or remove it. Comfort during actual work matters more than matching a preset notch.

How to make a rolled-towel lumbar roll

A towel is a practical trial because it lets you change thickness without buying equipment. Roll it loosely enough to form a broad cylinder, place it at the small of the back and sit against it. If the roll feels too aggressive, unroll it slightly or use a thinner towel. If it collapses, add a second layer or use a removable cushion that holds its shape.

The towel is a temporary aid, not a medical brace. It should stay in place while you work but still allow you to change position. If you repeatedly have to tighten, prop or reposition it, the chair may not be providing a stable fit.

Compare the practical options

Option Best use Adjustability and fit Limitations
Built-in, height-adjustable lumbar support A chair that already fits most of your body Can be moved to the small of the back; OSHA identifies height adjustment as a useful chair feature. Range, firmness and projection depend on the chair; dimensions are not stated in the official guidance.
Rolled towel Trying support at no purchase cost or temporarily filling a gap Thickness can be changed by rolling or unrolling; CDC/NIOSH and OSHA describe this type of lumbar roll. Can flatten or slip and may need readjustment.
Removable back-support cushion A chair with no built-in support or insufficient adjustment Can be positioned independently and removed when not comfortable. There is no universally prescribed cushion geometry, height or firmness; a thick cushion can reduce seat depth.
Different adjustable chair The current chair cannot let you sit back with supported feet and a comfortable lumbar fit Look for a backrest that follows the spine’s curves and lumbar adjustment that reaches your lower back. Buying a chair is not automatically necessary; first determine whether simple adjustments or a temporary support solve the fit.

Judge every option in the chair and desk you actually use. A support that feels good on its own can be wrong if it pushes you toward the desk, leaves your feet unsupported or makes the seat too short.

Choose an option without overspending

Start with the least complicated change that addresses the actual gap. If the built-in support reaches your lower back and can be adjusted comfortably, there is no reason to add another cushion. If the chair has no support, a rolled towel is the free trial OSHA specifically describes. It can show whether gentle contact in the lumbar hollow feels useful before you purchase anything.

A removable cushion is reasonable when the towel slips, collapses or cannot provide a consistent shape. Treat it as an optional fit tool, not as a product with a guaranteed pain-reduction effect. Check it in your normal desk position: a cushion that works on a dining chair may push you too close to a desk or leave insufficient room for your thighs in an office chair.

Consider replacing the chair only when its dimensions or adjustment range prevent a workable setup. A chair with a backrest that follows the spine’s curves and lumbar adjustment that reaches your lower back is more relevant than a chair marketed with an especially thick pad. If possible, try the chair with the desk you use and confirm that your feet, reach and back contact work together.

Fine-tune the rest of the workstation

Seat depth and pelvis position

Keep your pelvis supported by the seat rather than sliding forward to escape the lumbar pad. The back of your knees should not be forced against a hard seat edge. If adding a cushion takes away too much seat depth, try a thinner support or a chair with more usable depth. A support should help you remain against the backrest, not make you perch on the front of the seat.

Feet and lower legs

Stable foot support helps you remain seated against the backrest. OSHA recommends feet flat on the floor or a footrest; Mayo Clinic similarly advises flat feet or a footrest and thighs parallel to the floor. Use a footrest when lowering the chair would otherwise make the desk too high for comfortable work. Source: OSHA and Mayo Clinic.

Desk reach and upper body

Keep frequently used items close enough that you do not lean away from the backrest. A correctly placed lumbar pad cannot compensate for a monitor, keyboard or mouse that keeps you reaching forward. Adjust the chair and desk together, then test the complete working position. If you repeatedly slide forward while reading or typing, investigate desk reach and seat depth before adding more lumbar projection.

Torso-to-thigh angle

In a Mayo Clinic News Network desk-work Q&A, physical therapist Jill Henderzahs-Mason described a torso-to-thigh angle of 115 to 120 degrees. That is the clinician’s setup recommendation in that Q&A, not a universal numeric target or a population statistic. Read the source at Mayo Clinic News Network. Use the angle as a reference only if it feels natural; do not force your hips or back into a number.

Signs the fit is working

A workable setup lets you sit back without consciously holding yourself there. The pad contacts the lumbar hollow broadly, your shoulders can stay relaxed, and your head remains over your torso while you look at the screen. Your feet have stable support, your knees are not jammed against the seat edge, and your hands can reach the keyboard and mouse without pulling you forward.

Reassess after doing real tasks rather than after a few seconds of stillness. Reading, typing and using a mouse change your pelvis and torso position. If you need to brace against the support, repeatedly slide away from it or develop increasing pressure during ordinary work, the setting is not successful even if it looked aligned initially.

Troubleshoot common discomfort

  • Pressure directly on the spine: Move the support slightly to either side or reduce its thickness. A broad, gentle contact is preferable to a narrow hard edge.
  • Feeling pushed toward the desk: The pad may be too deep, the seat may be too short, or the chair may be too close to the desk. Try a thinner roll, increase usable seat depth if possible, and reposition the chair before adding more support.
  • Increased low-back arching: Lower the support in small steps or reduce projection. Sit back with relaxed shoulders; do not compensate by slouching forward.
  • Support sits between the shoulder blades: Lower it toward the belt-line hollow. Lumbar support is for the lower back, not the mid-back.
  • Support keeps sliding: Reposition it while seated, use the chair’s retaining strap if supplied, or switch to a roll that holds its shape. A slipping support is not a stable setup.
  • Feet dangle after lowering or raising the chair: Add a footrest so your feet are supported without forcing the seat into an unsuitable height.
  • Numbness, sharp pain or symptoms that persist: Stop using the setup that aggravates you and seek individualized health advice. These instructions do not provide symptom-specific diagnosis or treatment.

A simple reset when discomfort appears

First, stop the task and note whether the discomfort comes from the support, seat edge, unsupported feet or reaching toward the desk. Second, remove or reduce the support and sit back again; do not respond by tightening it or forcing a larger arch. Third, restore foot support and bring the work surface within a comfortable reach before deciding whether a different support is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make one change at a time so you can tell what helped. If the support is comfortable only when you slouch forward, the problem is probably the combined chair-and-desk fit rather than a need for a stronger lumbar device. If symptoms continue after removing the aggravating setup, seek individual health guidance.

Change position instead of holding one posture

Mayo Clinic advises against sitting in one position for hours. Get up, walk around and change position during the workday; lumbar support should make a position easier to maintain, not lock you into it. Alternate between sitting back against the support and brief standing or walking breaks that fit your work demands. See Mayo Clinic’s guidance for the movement recommendation. No fixed break interval is established by these sources, so use regular changes in position rather than chasing a particular timer.

When you return to the chair, check that the support is still at the small of your back rather than assuming it stayed in place. Body position changes naturally as you type, read or speak, so a quick reset is more useful than one permanent setting.

When a different chair is the sensible next step

Consider a different chair only when the current one cannot be adjusted to let you sit back, support your feet and place lumbar support comfortably. Useful features include a backrest that follows the spine’s curves and lumbar adjustment that reaches your lower back. Try the chair with your normal desk if possible, because a chair that fits in a showroom may not fit your desk height or reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new chair will not replace movement or resolve every source of back pain. If a basic towel or cushion works but the chair’s other dimensions remain unsuitable, address the whole workstation rather than buying a more aggressive lumbar device.

Lumbar support is not a medical brace or cure

OSHA and CDC/NIOSH provide workstation-comfort recommendations. NICE’s guideline for low back pain and sciatica emphasizes self-management for many people and recommends against belts or corsets as a treatment. That recommendation concerns therapeutic braces; it should not be read as an endorsement or rejection of an office-chair cushion. Review the clinical guidance at NICE.

No directly applicable statistic in these sources quantifies how much a lumbar cushion prevents or treats lower-back pain. Therefore, choose support for fit and comfort, not for a promised percentage reduction or a claim that it will prevent injury. Stop an adjustment that worsens symptoms and obtain professional advice for persistent, severe or changing pain.

A quick final check before a work session

  • Your back is in contact with the backrest and the support fills the small hollow rather than forcing an exaggerated arch.
  • You can reach your keyboard and mouse without leaning away from the chair.
  • Your feet are flat on the floor or securely supported by a footrest.
  • The support does not create pressure, numbness or increasing pain.
  • You can change position and get up during the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly should lumbar support sit?

Place its thickest or most prominent area in the small hollow of your lower back, just above the belt line. It should support the natural inward curve without pushing your ribs or shoulders forward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a rolled towel instead of buying a lumbar pillow?

Yes. OSHA and CDC/NIOSH describe a rolled towel or lumbar roll as a temporary way to provide support. Roll it into a broad, comfortable shape, adjust its thickness, and remove it if it causes pressure or worsens symptoms.

How thick or firm should the support be?

The official guidance does not set one universal thickness, firmness or height. Use the least projection that fills the hollow comfortably. Your chair, body shape and seat depth determine the fit.

Should I keep using lumbar support if my back hurts more?

No. Reposition it, reduce its thickness or remove it and reassess the chair, seat height and desk reach. Do not persist with painful pressure or assume that stronger support is better.

Do I need a new office chair?

Not automatically. Try the built-in adjustment, a towel or a removable cushion first. A different chair is sensible when the current one cannot let you sit back, support your feet and reach the desk comfortably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can lumbar support prevent or cure lower-back pain?

These sources do not establish a quantified prevention or treatment benefit. Lumbar support is an ergonomic comfort aid, not a cure or guarantee. Persistent, severe or changing pain needs individualized health advice.

How often should I get up from the chair?

Mayo Clinic advises against sitting in one position for hours and recommends getting up, walking around and changing position. The cited guidance does not prescribe a single timer interval; regular movement matters more than a precise number.

What if my feet do not reach the floor after adjusting the chair?

Use a footrest so your feet are stable while the chair remains at a workable height for the desk. OSHA and Mayo Clinic both identify a footrest as an option when the chair cannot be lowered without creating another workstation problem.

The Bottom Line

Set lumbar support in the small of your back, use only enough projection to fill the natural curve, and keep your feet and desk reach comfortable. A towel is a valid temporary option; remove or reposition any support that increases symptoms, and change position throughout the day.
