Set up Reader Revenue Manager (RRM) by first adding your publication in Google Publisher Center, then selecting a content-access prompt, configuring any subscription or contribution plan, completing the payments profile, and installing the generated code in your site’s <head>. The prompt will not appear until the relevant pages contain an RRM snippet.
Before you begin, confirm your publication’s country supports the payment features you need, decide whether you are selling access or requesting reader support, and collect the organization, logo, payment and CMS access details listed below.
What you need before opening Reader Revenue Manager
Reader Revenue Manager is configured per publication in Publisher Center. It does not begin with a script pasted into your website; the publication record and its verified web properties must exist first.

Google Account and publication access
- Use a Google Account that has access to the publication.
- Add the publication in Publisher Center before entering the RRM setup flow.
- Have the publication’s name, location, verified website URLs and contact information ready. These details are stored in the Publisher Center publication record.
Brand and organization information
If you plan to ask for contributions or sell subscriptions, prepare the personal or business information requested during onboarding. Prepare a publication logo as well. Google recommends a PNG or JPEG logo at 1,000 × 1,000 pixels; 512 × 512 pixels is the stated minimum.

Website and CMS access
Someone on your team must be able to edit the site’s theme, template or equivalent code area. The generated snippet is installed in the <head> of relevant pages, so a user who can only edit article text generally cannot complete the implementation.
Country and organization eligibility
Check Google’s current country list before designing a paid launch. Google separates countries that support payments from countries where only engagement features are available. A country being eligible for RRM prompts does not necessarily mean that subscriptions or contributions can collect money there.
Choose the reader action before configuring anything
RRM can display different content-access prompts. Select the model that matches what a reader receives in return for taking action.

For a payment model, Google identifies the paywall and contributions request as the relevant choices. A contribution is not automatically the same as a voluntary charitable donation: Google describes contributions as normally involving an exchange of value, while donations are not supported as a general RRM monetization type.
Special rule for nonprofits
During onboarding, a nonprofit must self-declare its nonprofit status. Google disables the standard subscription and contribution CTAs for nonprofit organizations. A nonprofit can instead use a custom CTA to send readers to its existing donation platform, or use other non-monetization prompts such as registration, newsletters or surveys.
Step-by-step: create the publication and start RRM
- Add the publication in Publisher Center. Enter the publication details, location, website information and contact details. Verify the website URLs requested by Publisher Center.
- Select the publication. Open the publication’s management area and choose Reader Revenue Manager.
- Choose an initial content-access prompt. Select the prompt that represents your first launch model. Google provides one-time instructions for the initial choice.
- Complete the onboarding form. Supply the organization or personal details requested, upload the logo, and declare nonprofit status if that applies.
- Finish the initial setup. After the first prompt is configured, Google says additional prompts can be added later. Treat each additional prompt as a separate implementation decision because it may require its own product, page targeting or code placement.
Do not skip the prompt selection on the assumption that the script alone will activate RRM. The site needs a configured prompt and a matching snippet before a reader can see the experience.

Configure subscriptions, contributions and pricing
Subscription plans for a paywall
Create subscription plans in Publisher Center after selecting a paywall. Google lists these recurring periods:

For a trial, the available choices listed by Google are no trial, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days or 60 days. Select the period and trial deliberately: the plan’s recurrence and trial terms are what readers will see when they subscribe.
Contribution amounts
A contributions request can use configured contribution amounts and recurrence periods. The available recurrence choices depend on the configuration shown in your account; do not describe a contribution as a subscription unless the reader is actually receiving access governed by a subscription product.
Draft versus Live
Every new plan starts in Draft. Creating a plan does not publish it. Set the plan to Live before expecting it to appear on the site. If a prompt loads but a price or offer is missing, check the plan status before changing your page code.
Fees and pricing disclosures
Google’s getting-started material lists a 5% transaction-fee figure that includes credit-card fees. The page does not attach a publication year to that figure, and payment terms can change, so verify the current terms in your account before using 5% in a budget, reader price or revenue forecast.

- Create or add the payments profile. Choose the existing profile that belongs to the publication or create one when prompted.
- Provide identity or organization information. Complete the verification requested for the profile’s owner and legal entity.
- Add bank account details. Enter the receiving bank information and complete any associated verification.
- Review the profile status. Resolve requests for additional information before announcing paid access.
Google warns that a publisher cannot receive payments without bank details. A configured plan and a working prompt therefore do not, by themselves, establish that payouts are ready.

Install the RRM code on your site
Retrieve the generated snippet
In Publisher Center, open the publication’s Reader Revenue Manager area and choose Add code snippet to your site. If setup is already complete, the snippet can also be retrieved through CMS Sync.
Place it in the page head
- Copy the snippet generated for the prompt or product you configured.
- Open the CMS theme, template or site-wide header area that controls the relevant pages.
- Paste the snippet inside the page’s
<head>. - Publish the template or save the CMS change.
- Clear any page, server or CDN cache that could continue serving the old template.
Google specifies one RRM snippet per page. Do not paste multiple competing RRM snippets into the same document while testing.
Match snippets to page types and products
Code placement determines which pages are open, which are governed by a product and where a prompt can load. Map the snippets to templates rather than manually editing a few articles and assuming the rest of the site is covered.
Open-access articles
When a paywall is configured, use the open-access snippet on articles that should remain freely readable. This lets those pages stay outside the paid product while the paywalled templates use the product-specific configuration.
Paywalled articles
Use the product-ID snippet on pages governed by the subscription product. If separate products apply to separate content types, place the corresponding product-ID snippet on each relevant page or template.
Contributions and surveys
For contributions or surveys, Google’s implementation guidance calls for the relevant snippet across the articles where the prompt should be available. Apply it through the article template or another consistent page-level mechanism.

Multiple content categories
Draw a page-to-product map before editing templates. For example, a general news template can use the open-access snippet, a premium analysis template can use Product A’s snippet, and a specialist archive template can use Product B’s snippet. Keep one snippet on each page and ensure the template condition cannot output two snippets at once.
WordPress implementation
For WordPress, Google recommends using Site Kit for the integration. Follow the Site Kit connection and RRM setup flow, then confirm that it inserts the configuration on the intended page types.
If the Site Kit route is unavailable, Google’s alternative is a third-party code-insertion plugin. Retrieve the snippet from the Publisher Center CMS Sync area and add it through the plugin’s header or site-wide code field. Restrict the insertion to the page types that match your open-access, product or engagement plan; a site-wide insertion can expose the wrong prompt on pages that should use another product.
Verify the installation before launch
- Open a representative page. Test at least one open-access article, one page governed by a paid product, and one page using a contribution or engagement prompt if you configured those types.
- Confirm the prompt appears. If the page is eligible and the plan is Live, the configured prompt should load for the relevant reader state.
- Check the page source or template output. Confirm that exactly one intended RRM snippet is present in the
<head>. - Test page targeting. Verify that an open article does not receive a paywalled product ID and that premium content does not accidentally receive the open-access snippet.
- Test the payment path separately. Where payments are enabled, follow the reader flow through the offer and confirm that the displayed recurrence, trial and amount match the Live plan.
- Recheck after caching. Purge CMS, server and CDN caches, then reload in a private browser window so an older template or reader session does not hide the change.
Publishers that already have the RRM snippet installed can add subscription or contribution CTA buttons inside the page body using Google’s documented button attributes. Use those attributes exactly as documented rather than inventing custom names, and keep the button’s product or contribution target consistent with the page’s head snippet.

The prompt never appears
- Confirm the publication was created in Publisher Center and that RRM onboarding was completed.
- Confirm the snippet is in the page
<head>, not only in article text. - Check that the plan is Live, not still Draft.
- Confirm the page is assigned the correct prompt or product.
- Clear caching layers and test in a private browser session.
A paywall appears on pages that should be open
Inspect the template condition and replace the product-specific snippet with the open-access snippet on those pages. Also check whether a site-wide header or plugin is adding a second snippet; Google specifies one snippet per page.

The offer or price is missing
Check that the relevant plan exists, has the intended recurrence and trial, and has been switched from Draft to Live. Then verify that the page contains that plan’s product-ID snippet rather than an open-access or different-product snippet.

Payments cannot be completed
Recheck country eligibility, the payments-profile status, identity or organization verification and bank account details. Engagement prompts may be available in a country where payment collection is not.
A nonprofit cannot select a subscription or contribution CTA
This is expected under Google’s documented nonprofit rules. Use a custom CTA that directs readers to the nonprofit’s existing donation platform, or select a non-monetization prompt.
WordPress changes do not reach the live site
Confirm that Site Kit or the code-insertion plugin is connected to the correct publication, that the code is being added to the intended template, and that caches have been cleared. View the rendered page rather than relying only on the editor’s preview.
Launch checklist
- Publication added and website URLs verified in Publisher Center.
- Correct Google Account and CMS permissions confirmed.
- Logo supplied at the recommended dimensions and format.
- Country checked for payment eligibility or engagement-only availability.
- Paywall, contributions request or engagement prompt selected for the intended reader action.
- Nonprofit status declared accurately, if applicable.
- Subscription recurrence, trial and price configured, or contribution recurrence configured.
- Every required plan changed from Draft to Live.
- Payments profile verified and bank details added when collecting money.
- Exactly one appropriate snippet installed in the
<head>of each relevant page. - Open-access, product-specific and multi-product templates mapped correctly.
- Representative pages tested after cache purges.
Where to get implementation help
Google directs publishers with RRM implementation problems to its support team, which can help enable RRM, manage configuration and troubleshoot implementation. For problems specifically related to appearing in Google News, Google points publishers to the Publisher Community; that is separate from fixing a missing or incorrectly targeted RRM snippet on your own site.
RRM documentation does not establish a guaranteed conversion, retention or revenue improvement. Treat the setup as an implementation project: validate eligibility, configure the commercial terms your publication can fulfill, install the correct snippet on every intended template, and test the complete reader and payment paths before promotion.
