To receive gifted memberships on a YouTube livestream in India, the creator must first enable channel memberships in YouTube Studio. Viewers then buy gifts from an eligible livestream or Premiere’s live chat, and potential recipients must opt in. India is listed as a supported location for channel memberships, but eligibility and the gifting control can still vary by channel and account.
What creators and viewers need to do
- Creator: Enable channel memberships and set up levels and perks in YouTube Studio.
- Viewer buying gifts: Join an eligible livestream or Premiere, choose Membership gifting in live chat, select a quantity, and complete checkout.
- Potential recipient: Opt in to gifts and meet YouTube’s account and activity requirements.
Gifting is not switched on from the Studio setup screen; purchases happen in the live chat of an eligible livestream or Premiere.
Check whether your channel can offer memberships
YouTube lists India among the locations where eligible creators can use channel memberships. The published minimum thresholds for monetization include 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the past 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Meeting those thresholds does not guarantee approval; the channel must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and satisfy feature-specific conditions. YouTube also requires creators to be at least 18, live in a supported location, accept and comply with the Commerce Product Module (CPM), and meet its content conditions. Videos designated Made for Kids and videos with music claims count as ineligible for memberships; channels with a significant number of ineligible videos may not qualify, and some music channels may be excluded. Check the current requirements in YouTube Help because meeting the minimum audience thresholds alone is not enough.

Enable channel memberships in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer. Open YouTube Studio and sign in to the channel you want to monetize.
- Open Earn > Memberships. Select Earn from the left menu, then select Memberships. This tab appears only when the channel is eligible.
- Select Get started. Follow the on-screen setup prompts. Accept the CPM when prompted; YouTube requires it for channel-membership revenue.
- Create membership levels and perks. Choose benefits you can deliver consistently and explain their terms clearly to members.
- Allow for review time. After YPP acceptance, YouTube says membership activation may take up to two days while it reviews the channel.
- Check the live chat. On an eligible livestream or Premiere, look for the Membership gifting control. Gift purchases are made there, not in the Studio membership setup.

How a viewer buys gifted memberships
- Sign in to YouTube and join the eligible channel’s livestream or Premiere.
- Open the live-chat controls and select Membership gifting.
- Choose how many viewers to gift memberships to, then complete the purchase using the amount shown at checkout.
YouTube describes gift levels as the closest highest available price level up to and including US$9.99. The actual checkout amount depends on what YouTube shows for the viewer’s account and region, so do not treat regular channel-membership tier prices as a fixed gift price. A purchase is considered fulfilled once YouTube distributes the first gift membership. Chat displays a countdown ticker for a limited time, but gifts are still distributed if the stream or chat ends before the announcement. The number of gifts, purchaser’s channel name, and profile picture are public in chat and may be shared with third-party services through the channel’s API access. How viewers opt in to receive gifts
Recipients must be subscribed to the channel, have interacted with it recently, and opt in. They must be signed in to a YouTube channel that is not a Brand Account. Current members of that channel cannot receive a gifted membership.

- Alternatively, open Join > More > Gift settings on the channel or watch page and switch on Allow gifts.
- To stop receiving gifts, return to Gift settings and switch the setting off.
A selected viewer is announced in chat and notified by email. Gifted access lasts up to one month; it does not recur or charge the recipient when it expires, and gifts are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash value.

India availability, prices, and payment details
India’s inclusion in YouTube’s channel-membership location list means eligible India-based creators can use the feature; it does not guarantee that every channel has qualified or that every viewer will see a gift-purchase option. The separate gift help page does not establish a country-specific guarantee for gifting in India. Check the actual channel and account in an eligible livestream or Premiere.
YouTube’s India pricing page lists channel-membership level prices, with a new pricing rollout that began gradually in May 2025. Listed current tiers range from ₹59 to ₹39,999. These are membership level prices, not a definitive price list for gifts, and channels on legacy tiers may show different prices. Use the amount displayed at gift checkout. For recurring channel memberships in India, YouTube says payment details may need to be verified or re-entered under RBI eMandate requirements. This concerns recurring memberships; check the payment flow shown for a gift purchase rather than assuming the same billing conditions. Promotional gifts and membership reporting
Promotional gifts
Creators with a membership tier below US$5 may receive promotional gifts to distribute each month. YouTube says these gifts are offered on the first of each month, do not roll over, earn no revenue, and are not charged to the creator or viewer. They must be distributed in sets of five before paid gifts can be purchased, and are distributed from a livestream or Premiere’s live chat. Promotional gifts are not currently available for Brand Accounts. See YouTube’s guidance on promoting memberships.

Reviewing gift activity and revenue
In YouTube Studio Analytics, open Revenue > How you make money > Memberships, then use Memberships Type and select a time period to review gift and redeemed-membership counts. YouTube describes creators’ share as 70% of membership revenue after applicable taxes and fees are deducted, with transaction costs currently covered by YouTube. This is a general published share, not a guaranteed take-home amount for an individual creator. See YouTube’s membership analytics guidance.
Why Membership gifting may not appear
- The Memberships tab is missing in Studio: YouTube shows it only for eligible channels. Check YPP status, thresholds, location, content restrictions, and required agreements. If you have only recently been accepted into YPP, allow up to two days for review.
- Membership gifting is missing from chat: Confirm that channel memberships are active and that you are viewing an eligible livestream or Premiere. Channel or account eligibility and the specific context may affect whether the control appears; YouTube’s documentation does not establish a single India-specific cause.
- No recipient gets a gift: The selected viewer must be subscribed, recently engaged, opted in, using a non-Brand Account channel, and not already a member.
- Checkout says “We couldn’t verify your country”: YouTube advises trying another network or device and turning off an active VPN or proxy.
