To set up Gemini for TV, use the TV’s Settings > Accounts & Profiles > your account > Voice assistant menu and select Gemini for TV when your device and profile qualify. Then add the TV to the same Google Home as the Gemini-enabled device. Privacy controls are separate: you can manage personal results, Voice Match and the hands-free microphone, or remove the TV from Google Home to return it to Google Assistant.

Gemini for TV is a Google TV feature, not the same configuration as Gemini Apps on a phone, tablet or computer. Availability depends on the TV’s software, memory, model, country, language and profile age. Check Google’s current eligibility list for your exact combination before changing settings: Google TV Help: Do more with Gemini for TV.

Check eligibility before you try to enable Gemini

The Gemini option appears only when Google has enabled the feature for both the device and the active profile. Google’s general requirements are an eligible Google TV device running Android 14 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM, in a supported country and language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini responses are limited to profiles for people aged 18 or older. A children’s profile does not receive Gemini for TV. A non-child profile belonging to someone under 18 continues to receive Google Assistant responses instead. If your household has several profiles, check which one is selected before diagnosing a missing option.

Countries listed for broader availability

Google currently lists Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States for broader Gemini for TV availability. The list is rollout-dependent, so being in one of these countries does not by itself guarantee that every model or language is enabled.

More restricted voice-access rollout

Google documents a narrower voice-access rollout for selected devices in the United States and Canada, with English (US/Canada) and French (Canada). The listed devices are:

  • Selected TCL QM9K, QM7K, QM8K, QM6K and X11K models
  • Google TV Streamer
  • Walmart onn. 4K Pro
  • Selected Hisense U7, U8 and UX models

Google says expansion to more Android 14-and-later Google TV devices with at least 2 GB of RAM, plus additional regions and languages, is expected by late 2026. That is a stated rollout expectation rather than a promise that a particular television already has the feature. Verify your model and current software on Google’s support page before assuming an upgrade is required.

Understand what is being configured

Gemini for TV runs on the Google TV device and uses the signed-in Google account and profile. It can answer questions and, when personal results are allowed, retrieve account-linked information such as Google Photos and Google Calendar results. Its controls are found in Google TV and Google Home settings, not in the Gemini Apps settings on another device.

A shared television has a different privacy model from a personal phone. Anyone using the TV may be able to request personal results for the signed-in account unless you also configure Voice Match. Google warns that Voice Match is not an absolute barrier: a similar voice or a recording might be recognized. Treat it as a convenience filter, not as account security.

Separate the three decisions

Setup, personal-result access and microphone behavior are separate decisions. Selecting Gemini changes the assistant used by an eligible profile. It does not automatically mean that Calendar or Photos responses must be available, and it does not require hands-free listening. You can use Gemini with the remote’s voice button, leave personal results disabled, or combine personal results with Voice Match if that balance suits the room.

This separation is useful when several people share one screen. For example, an adult profile can use Gemini for general questions while personal results remain off for a family room. A private room may justify enabling personal results, but the person who controls the Google Home should still understand that Voice Match is only an additional check.

Enable Gemini for TV on the television

  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts & Profiles.
  3. Choose the Google account profile you want to configure.
  4. Open Voice assistant.
  5. If the device, region, language and profile qualify, select Gemini for TV and complete the on-screen acknowledgement.

If Gemini for TV is not listed, do not assume that resetting the television will fix it. First confirm that the TV runs Android 14 or later, has at least 2 GB of RAM, uses a supported model and language, and is in a supported country. Then confirm that the selected profile is an adult profile rather than a children’s or under-18 profile. Rollouts can also make the setting unavailable on an otherwise compatible model.

What to check on the TV first

  • Open the TV’s device or system information page and note the exact model, not just the manufacturer name.
  • Check for system updates before comparing your unit with a newer model in the same product family.
  • Confirm the active Google account and profile; changing profiles can change the assistant response.
  • Check the TV’s country and language choices against Google’s current list, especially if the TV was imported or recently moved.

These checks prevent a common mistake: treating a missing menu as a software fault when the account, language or rollout is the limiting factor.

Add the TV to Google Home

Google Home association is part of the setup. On the television:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accounts & Profiles > your account > Google Home.
  3. Select Add TV to Home.
  4. Choose the appropriate Home and finish the prompts.

You can also use the Google Home app’s device settings to assign the television to a Home or change its placement. The TV profile must be in the same Google Home as the device where Gemini setup was acknowledged. Google says eligible TVs in that Home receive access automatically after acknowledgement. If you use a separate Home, repeat the setup acknowledgement there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Home is more than a room label in this process. If a household has separate Homes for an apartment, office or vacation property, a TV placed in the wrong Home may not inherit the expected Gemini setup. Check both the account shown on the TV and the Home selected in the Google Home app. Moving the TV to a different Home can change which setup acknowledgement applies.

For Google’s current Home-association instructions, see Do more with Gemini for TV.

Choose whether Gemini can show personal results

Personal results determine whether Gemini for TV may answer with information connected to the signed-in Google account. Examples include results from Google Photos and Google Calendar. On Google TV, look in the privacy or voice-assistant settings for Personal results. Google’s help pages use slightly different labels in different TV and Assistant paths, so the exact wording can vary by device and software version.

The Google Home app also lets you set personal results for a Home and adjust them for individual devices. The relevant controls are described in Google Home and Nest Help: Allow personal results on your speakers and displays and Google Assistant Help: Allow personal results on your Assistant-enabled devices.

Decide based on how the TV is shared

Choice Convenience Exposure on a shared screen Important limitation
Personal results enabled Gemini can respond with account-linked Calendar, Photos and other available personal information. People using the TV may see or hear information belonging to the signed-in account. Without Voice Match, Google says anyone using the device can get personal results for that account.
Personal results enabled with Voice Match Retains personal responses while attempting to recognize an approved voice. Reduces casual access but does not eliminate the possibility of exposure. Google warns that a similar voice or a recording might access personal results.
Personal results disabled Gemini remains available for general TV questions and commands that do not require account data. Account-linked Calendar or Photos information is not presented through personal results on that device or Home. You give up the convenience of personalized responses.

If the television is in a living room, guest room or other area where visitors routinely speak to it, disabling personal results is the clearest privacy choice. If you keep them enabled, use Voice Match only as an additional filter and avoid treating it as proof of identity.

Device-level or Home-level control

Google’s controls can be presented at the Home level and, in the Google Home app, adjusted for individual devices. Review the setting at both levels after moving a TV or creating a new Home. A household that wants personal results on a private bedroom TV but not on a living-room TV should use the per-device option where available rather than enabling the feature indiscriminately across the Home.

Configure Voice Match carefully

Voice Match can limit personal results to a voice Google recognizes. Set it up only after deciding that personal results are acceptable on this particular TV. The feature is designed to reduce accidental access, not to protect sensitive information against a determined person, a replayed recording or a similar-sounding speaker.

When Voice Match is not reliable enough for your household, turn off personal results for the TV or its Home instead of relying on recognition. Google’s guidance on personal-result controls is available in the Google Home and Nest Help article and the Google Assistant Help article.

Test the arrangement with the people who actually use the television. Try a normal request from the enrolled speaker, then have another household member ask for the same type of personal information. If the result is too revealing, disable personal results rather than assuming that a second training attempt turns Voice Match into a secure login.

Choose whether the TV listens for “Hey Google”

Hands-free voice access is optional. On a supported device, open:

Settings > Accounts & Profiles > your account > Voice assistant

Turn on Hands-free mic, then make sure the device microphone itself is enabled. Depending on the setup, the microphone may be built into the television, remote or streaming device. Use the manufacturer’s physical controls to locate the microphone switch or mute button.

Google notes that hands-free activation can occur when the device hears voices or noises resembling “Hey Google.” If your household does not want the TV listening for a wake phrase, leave Hands-free mic off and use the remote’s voice button instead. For a stronger hardware-level stop, use the television, remote or streaming device’s physical microphone mute control when available.

Hands-free versus remote-button voice input

Method Best for Trade-off
Hands-free mic Quick commands from across the room. The microphone remains ready for a wake phrase, and similar sounds can activate it.
Remote voice button Households that want an explicit action before speaking. You must have the remote nearby and press the button for each interaction.
Physical mute Periods when the household wants the microphone stopped. Hands-free commands will not work until the mute is released.

Turn Gemini for TV off

Gemini for TV does not have a dedicated on/off switch. Google’s exact wording is: “Gemini for TV doesn’t have a specific on or off switch.” — Google TV Help, accessed October 13, 2026.

“Gemini for TV doesn’t have a specific on or off switch.”

To stop using Gemini for TV, remove the television from Google Home. Google says the device then uses Google Assistant instead. On the TV, open Settings > Accounts & Profiles > your account > Google Home and remove the TV from its Home. This is a service-level change, so it also changes the TV’s Home association; it is not merely a voice-model toggle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because removal affects the Home relationship, note the Home name and placement first if you expect to add the TV again. Re-adding it later may require choosing the Home and acknowledging Gemini setup again. If the goal is only to stop wake-word listening, leave Gemini enabled and turn off Hands-free mic instead; removing the TV from Home is the broader change.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Gemini for TV is missing from Voice assistant

  • Check that the TV runs Android 14 or later and has at least 2 GB of RAM.
  • Confirm the exact model is included in the current Google rollout for your country and language.
  • Switch to an eligible adult profile. Children’s profiles do not receive Gemini, and under-18 non-child profiles continue to receive Google Assistant.
  • Check the language and country settings against Google’s current availability list.
  • Install available Google TV system updates, then check the Voice assistant menu again.
  • Confirm that the TV is associated with the Google Home where setup was acknowledged.

The TV still answers with Google Assistant

Verify that Gemini for TV was selected for the active profile and that the profile is at least 18 years old. If another household member changed profiles, the response behavior follows that selected profile. A device can also remain outside the current rollout even when its hardware appears similar to a supported model.

Personal information appears when you did not expect it

Open the TV or Google Home personal-results controls and disable them for the device or Home. If they remain enabled, remember that Voice Match can reduce casual access but cannot guarantee that another person, a similar voice or a recording will be rejected.

Hands-free commands do not work

  • Confirm that Hands-free mic is enabled in the Voice assistant settings.
  • Check that the physical microphone switch is not muted.
  • Identify whether the microphone is on the TV, remote or streaming device and use that hardware’s controls.
  • Test the remote’s voice button to separate a microphone problem from a Gemini availability problem.

Different rooms or Homes behave differently

Confirm that the TV profile belongs to the same Google Home where Gemini setup was acknowledged. A separate Home requires its own acknowledgement. Device placement in the Google Home app does not replace the setup acknowledgement for that Home.

If your current TV is not eligible

Do not replace hardware until you have checked the exact model, Android version, RAM, country, language and profile requirements. Google TV Streamer is one device Google lists for the limited voice-access rollout in the United States and Canada, but availability can change and the same regional and language conditions still apply. Treat it as a compatibility option, not a guarantee of access.

For current device and regional details, consult Google’s official Gemini for TV help page. For broader information about Google TV data practices, see How Google TV handles your data.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Verify eligibility before troubleshooting: Android 14 or later, at least 2 GB of RAM, supported model, country and language.
  • Use an eligible adult profile and check which profile is active before testing.
  • Add the TV to the same Google Home used for Gemini setup.
  • Decide whether personal Calendar, Photos and other account-linked results belong on a shared screen.
  • If personal results are enabled, configure Voice Match with the understanding that it is not foolproof.
  • Leave Hands-free mic off, or use the physical mute control, if the household does not want wake-word listening.
  • To return to Google Assistant, remove the TV from Google Home because Google documents no separate Gemini for TV switch.

Recommended setups by household

  • Shared family room: Use an eligible adult profile, keep personal results disabled, and use the remote voice button. This preserves general Gemini commands without placing account-linked information on a common screen.
  • Private room: Enable personal results only if the signed-in account owner accepts the exposure, then consider Voice Match as an extra filter. Hands-free mic is a convenience choice, not a requirement.
  • Guest or rental space: Keep personal results disabled and leave Hands-free mic off or muted. Check the active profile after guests or temporary users finish.
  • Multiple Homes: Confirm the TV is in the intended Home and acknowledge Gemini setup separately in each Home that needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see Gemini for TV in Voice assistant?

Check Android 14 or later, at least 2 GB of RAM, the exact model, supported country and language, and an adult profile aged 18 or older. Children’s profiles do not receive Gemini, and rollout availability can still vary by device.

Is Gemini for TV the same as Gemini on my phone?

No. Gemini for TV is configured on the Google TV device through its Voice assistant and Google Home settings. Gemini Apps settings on a phone, tablet or computer do not independently enable the TV feature.

Can other people see my Calendar or Photos on the TV?

If personal results are enabled, Google says anyone using the device can get personal results for the signed-in account unless Voice Match is also set up. Voice Match may reduce casual access, but Google warns that a similar voice or recording might still be recognized.

Can I use Gemini without a microphone listening all the time?

Yes. Leave Hands-free mic off and use the remote’s voice button. If available, use the physical mute control on the TV, remote or streaming device when you want the microphone stopped.

How do I switch back to Google Assistant?

Google says Gemini for TV has no specific on/off switch. Remove the TV from Google Home through Settings and the account’s Google Home menu; Google says the device then uses Google Assistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does adding a TV to Google Home automatically enable Gemini everywhere?

Eligible TVs in the same Home receive access after Gemini setup is acknowledged for a profile. A separate Home requires its own acknowledgement, and the TV profile must belong to the Home being configured.

Should I buy a Google TV Streamer to get Gemini?

Only after checking the current compatibility and regional list. Google includes Google TV Streamer in a limited voice-access rollout in the United States and Canada, but hardware, language, profile and rollout requirements still apply.

The Bottom Line

Check the TV model, Android version, RAM, country, language and adult profile first. Then enable Gemini in Voice assistant, place the TV in the correct Google Home, and decide separately whether personal results, Voice Match and hands-free listening fit the room. For the lowest-exposure setup, keep personal results and Hands-free mic off and use the remote. To return to Google Assistant, remove the TV from Google Home.
