To set up a family account on Windows 11, first invite the person to your Microsoft family group, then connect their account to the PC, and finally configure any screen-time, app, or web controls you want. These are separate steps: adding someone to the family group alone does not connect a Windows device or turn on every control.

Before you start: choose the right account and role

Use a Microsoft account for the family member if you want to use the Family Safety features described here. Windows also supports local accounts, but Microsoft’s family-group and Family Safety workflows rely on Microsoft accounts and group membership. A child should usually be added as a Member; use Organizer for an adult who should manage the group.

Microsoft describes organizers as the family group’s administrators. They can manage members, limits, and permissions. Members can be any age, but the member’s device must also be connected before screen-time and app or web filters can work. See Microsoft’s explanation of Family Safety roles and permissions.

Step 1: Invite the person to your Microsoft family group

  1. As the family organizer, go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in.
  2. Choose Add a family member.
  3. Enter the person’s email address or phone number, then choose Member for a child or Organizer for an adult who needs management privileges.
  4. Have the invitee accept the invitation. Depending on their age and the applicable consent rules, Microsoft may ask for an adult’s consent.

If the person already belongs to another Microsoft family group, Microsoft says they must leave or be removed from that group before joining yours. For Microsoft’s current invitation steps, see Add people to your family group.

Step 2: Add the family member to the Windows 11 PC

  1. On the PC, open Settings > Accounts > Family.
  2. Add or select the family member. Microsoft’s device-connection instructions describe a path labeled Settings > Accounts > Family & other people; under Your family, select the child and choose Allow if that prompt appears.
  3. Have the family member sign in to Windows with the Microsoft account used for the family group. This helps the device appear as connected for Family Safety management.

The Family section’s wording can differ between Windows builds, so follow the closest matching Family option in Settings. Microsoft’s instructions are available in How to connect a device to a Microsoft account.

Keep a child’s account as a standard user

For Family features to work properly, Microsoft advises setting the child’s Windows account as a standard user rather than an administrator. An administrator account has broader control over the PC, which is not the intended setup for a child account managed through family controls. See Microsoft’s device-connection guidance.

Step 3: Configure the controls you want

After the account is in the family group and the PC is connected, open Family Safety online or in the Family Safety app and configure controls individually. Connecting the device does not automatically enable every limit or report.

Screen time

Organizers can set daily schedules and limits by platform for connected Windows, Xbox, and supported mobile devices. Screen-time schedules are a separate configuration step. If the Windows device is missing from the controls, confirm the family member has signed in on that PC and that it is connected to the family group. Microsoft explains the available controls in Set screen time limits across devices.

App and game limits

App and game filters work on Windows and Xbox. Set these separately from screen-time schedules; a device time limit does not itself establish which apps or games are allowed. See Microsoft’s app and game limit instructions.

Web and search filtering

Microsoft’s documented web-filtering workflow uses Microsoft Edge. The family member must be signed in to Edge with their Microsoft account for filtering to apply as described. When web filtering is enabled, unsupported browsers can be blocked; an organizer can manually unblock a browser if needed. See Microsoft’s app, game, and web filtering guidance.

Fix common setup problems

  • The device does not appear: Have the family member sign in to Windows on that device with the family-group Microsoft account, then check that it is connected to the family group.
  • Family controls are not working as expected: Check whether the child’s Windows account is an administrator. Microsoft recommends a standard-user account for Family features.
  • Web filtering or web activity looks incomplete: Confirm the member is signed in and using Edge for the described Microsoft filtering and reporting workflows.
  • The person cannot join your group: Check whether they are already in a different Microsoft family group; they must leave or be removed from it first.
  • The Settings path does not match: Microsoft support pages currently show both Family and Family & other people. Windows labels can vary by build.
