To set up Face ID, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter or create an iPhone passcode, then tap Set Up Face ID and complete the two guided face scans. From the same screen, choose which tasks can use Face ID and review your passcode, attention, locked-screen, and theft-protection options. Labels and available controls vary by iPhone model and iOS version.
Set up Face ID
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Enter your current passcode if prompted. If you have not set one, create a passcode first; Apple requires one to use Face ID. See Apple’s Face ID instructions.
- Tap Set Up Face ID. In a well-lit area, hold the iPhone upright in portrait orientation and place your face inside the frame.
- Follow the on-screen directions, moving your head gently to complete the first scan. Tap Continue, complete the second scan, then tap Done. Apple’s setup guide describes this two-scan enrollment.
- Back in Face ID & Passcode, enable Face ID for the supported tasks you want, such as unlocking iPhone, authorizing purchases and payments, or signing in to apps.
Add an alternate appearance if needed
To enroll another appearance, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up an Alternate Appearance and follow the prompts. This is optional; it may help if your appearance has changed substantially or Face ID has difficulty recognizing you with glasses. Apple explains the option in its Face ID support article.
If you suspect someone enrolled an appearance you did not authorize, tap Reset Face ID on the Face ID & Passcode screen and enroll your face again.

Choose passcode and locked-screen access settings
Use Settings > Face ID & Passcode to change your passcode or decide what remains available while iPhone is locked. Apple lists controls such as Today View, Notification Centre, Control Centre, Siri, Reply with Message, Home Control, Wallet, returning missed calls, and USB accessories. Choose access according to your balance of convenience and privacy; the available list can differ across models and software versions. Apple’s passcode guide describes these controls.

Some passcode-related requirements cannot be changed while Face ID, Touch ID, or Apple Pay is in use. Face ID also does not replace your passcode: you may need the passcode to unlock or verify identity in some situations.
Set the attention requirement
With Require Attention for Face ID enabled, iPhone checks that your eyes are open and looking at the screen before unlocking. Apple says requiring attention makes Face ID more secure. If an accessibility need makes that check difficult, you can change the attention setting in Settings > Face ID & Passcode; disabling it may make Face ID easier to use but removes that check. The related Attention Aware Features setting affects behaviors such as notification display, display dimming, and alert volume. Its behavior and the exact controls may depend on your iPhone and iOS version.

Stolen Device Protection is a separate optional safeguard for sensitive changes if someone has your iPhone and knows its passcode. Depending on the action, it can require Face ID or Touch ID without passcode fallback, or require biometric authentication, a one-hour security delay, and a second biometric check. Apple says the default applies protections when the iPhone is away from familiar locations; you can choose Always to apply them everywhere. That choice can mean delays even in familiar places.

Find it at Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection. Apple lists a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Find My, and Location Services/Significant Locations among the prerequisites. Apple states that Face ID data is encrypted, protected by the Secure Enclave, and never leaves the device; Apple’s setup guide also says it is not saved to iCloud. This describes Apple’s system as Apple documents it, not an independent security test. Read Apple’s Face ID security explanation.

If you cannot complete the usual head movement during enrollment, Apple provides an Accessibility Options flow that starts setup without that movement. Apple cautions that this requires more consistency when unlocking. For Face ID with a Mask, Apple specifies iPhone 12 or later with iOS 15.4 or later; that feature works only in portrait orientation and is not available on iPad. Other Face ID capabilities and orientations can vary by model and software version.
