For reliable Arlo alerts, set up each camera in the Arlo Secure app, make sure its rule is active in the current Routine, enable push notifications for that rule, and allow notifications from Arlo in your phone’s settings. Then check camera placement, signal strength, and Activity Zones so the camera detects the movement you care about without generating constant nuisance alerts.
Arlo’s support materials call the Pro 6 family “Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen),” while Essential 3 includes multiple variants. Check the exact model shown in your app and follow its prompts; labels and available features can vary by model, region, and app version.
Set up each camera in the Arlo Secure app
Arlo recommends using the in-app setup flow. Add cameras one at a time, selecting the correct Location and exact model so the app shows the appropriate charging, battery, and connection instructions.
- Open the Arlo Secure app and select the correct Location.
- Open Devices, choose the camera category, and select the exact camera model.
- Follow the prompts, including any instructions to charge the camera or check its battery.
- Choose the connection method offered for that model: connect through a SmartHub or Base Station, or connect directly to Wi-Fi.
- Finish setup and confirm the camera appears online in the app before configuring alerts.
According to Arlo’s setup guidance, a hub is optional for Essential wire-free cameras and Pro 4 or later cameras; it is required for Pro 3 and Ultra. Pro 6 and Essential 3 fall within the optional-hub categories, but follow the prompt for your specific model and region. Arlo’s camera setup instructions were updated January 16, 2026.

Configure the active Routine and camera rule
An alert depends on several separate settings: the camera must detect motion, the active Routine must include a rule for that camera, the rule must send a notification, and the phone must permit Arlo notifications. A missing link can prevent a push alert even when the camera is online.
- In the Arlo Secure app, open Routines and choose the mode you intend to use: Arm Away, Arm Home, or Standby.
- Select the camera’s rule, or add a rule for the camera if one is not present.
- Enable Motion Detection (or Audio Detection, where appropriate).
- Tap Send Notification, then turn on Notify Everyone under Push Notification.
- Save the rule and verify that the selected Routine is the one currently active.
For the documented workflow, see Arlo’s push notification and email alert instructions, updated August 1, 2025. Email alerts are a separate option; use the app’s rule settings to choose the delivery method you want.
Allow Arlo notifications on the phone
An enabled rule cannot bypass a phone-level notification block. Confirm that the operating system allows notifications from the Arlo Secure app, and check any Focus, Do Not Disturb, or other system setting that may silence or suppress alerts. Keep the app signed in.

Arlo’s cited system-level walkthrough is for Android; its menu labels should not be treated as universal across Android versions or as instructions for iOS. On an iPhone or a different Android version, use that phone’s notification settings to confirm Arlo is allowed to notify you.

Arlo’s placement recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee of identical detection in every home. The company recommends mounting the camera at least 7 feet (2 meters) above the ground or floor, angling it slightly downward, and placing it 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) from expected movement. Arlo identifies 5 to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) as the best motion-detection area. Arlo’s motion-detection placement guidance was updated August 1, 2025.
Aim across the route rather than straight down it. Arlo states: “The camera motion sensor is more sensitive to side-to-side movement across its field of view than to movement directly toward or away from the camera.” For a doorway, for example, angle the camera so a person crossing the approach moves laterally through the frame.

Check the signal indicator on the camera’s device card in the app. A weak connection to the router or SmartHub/Base Station can delay recording. Arlo recommends keeping a camera at least 6 feet (2 meters) from a hub or router to reduce interference and placing a hub centrally. Its stated 300-foot range is a maximum line-of-sight figure; walls and other obstructions reduce it. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independently measured guarantees.
Use Activity Zones and notification filters for different jobs
An Activity Zone limits where motion is considered within the camera’s view. Smart Notification settings determine which categories trigger notifications. They are not interchangeable: a zone focuses the detection area, while notification filters control which types of events alert you. Arlo says whether an event is saved or notified also depends on the active Modes and Rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Draw a narrow zone around the walkway, doorway, or other target instead of including the whole yard. Exclude roads, trees, flags, and other sources of recurring motion where possible; moving branches or flags inside a zone can still cause alerts. Recheck the zone after changing the camera angle. If a zone behaves inaccurately, Arlo recommends turning off Auto Zoom & Tracking and configuring the zone again. Its guidance notes that zone capacity and anchor points vary by model. See Arlo’s Activity Zone setup instructions, updated January 26, 2026, and its Activity Zone troubleshooting guidance, updated September 18, 2026.

Activity Zones may require an Arlo Secure plan for the listed cameras; some models may support them without a plan when connected to continuous AC power. Check the app for the requirements of your exact model and account region rather than assuming the same plan or power condition applies to every Essential 3 or Pro 6 variant.
If you want recordings but fewer phone alerts, adjust Smart Notification category switches or use a separate mode that records without sending notifications. Arlo notes that disabling a notification category may leave recordings in the Feed. If the camera is recording too often, narrow the zone, reposition the camera, or reduce motion sensitivity. See Arlo’s guidance on reducing unwanted notifications.

Basic motion notifications do not require Smart Detection. Smart Detection adds category-based options such as people, packages, vehicles, animals, and fire, depending on the camera and plan. Arlo requires an Arlo plan for Smart Detection, and plan options vary by region.

In the app, Arlo’s current instructions place these controls under Devices → device settings → Early Warning System → Smart Detection; names can change with app updates. Audio options may include smoke/CO alarms, gunshots, screams, dog barks, and glass breaking, but availability depends on the camera family and plan. A category shown as unavailable or grayed out may not be supported for that device or account. Do not assume limitations documented for older Essential generations apply to every Essential 3 camera; check the choices shown for your exact model. Arlo’s Smart Detection instructions were updated April 23, 2026.
Troubleshoot missed or unwanted alerts in order
- Confirm the correct Arlo Location is selected and the camera is online.
- Check that the intended Routine is active and that the camera has an enabled rule in it.
- Open the rule and verify Send Notification and Notify Everyone.
- Confirm the phone allows notifications from Arlo; check Focus, Do Not Disturb, or other system silencing settings.
- Check the camera’s signal indicator and adjust placement if the wireless link is weak.
- If events are missed or too frequent, adjust motion sensitivity and test the result.
- For nuisance alerts, tighten the Activity Zone, exclude recurring movement, review Smart Notification categories, and turn off Auto Zoom & Tracking if the zone is inaccurate.
For multiple 2K live streams in the Arlo Secure app, the Essential Indoor Camera (3rd Generation) user manual recommends at least 2 Mbps average bandwidth per camera. This is a recommendation for multiple 2K live streams, not a universal minimum for delivering alerts. Arlo Essential Indoor Camera (3rd Generation) User Manual, published October 2025.
