Use two separate controls to keep thriller content age-appropriate on Apple TV: configure a Kid or managed profile in the Apple TV app, then protect the whole Apple TV 4K with device-level Restrictions when you need a broader barrier. A profile can limit movie and television ratings and purchases for one viewer; device Restrictions cover access to rated or explicit content and other Apple TV activity. Downloaded third-party apps may require their own parental controls.
Understand the two parental-control layers
Apple TV has no single switch that governs every piece of video on every app. The Apple TV app has profile-level controls, while Apple TV 4K has a separate device-level Restrictions area. Using both gives a household the clearest separation between a child’s viewing space and the television itself.
| Control layer | Scope | What you can control | Where to find it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV app profile | One managed or Kid profile | Movie ratings, TV show ratings, and whether that profile can purchase or rent | Apple TV app sidebar > Settings > Profiles > select the profile > Restrictions | Applies to the Apple TV app profile; labels and choices vary by device and region |
| Profile access code | One profile | Whether someone can open that profile and see its Watchlist, history, and recommendations | Settings > Profiles > select the profile > Require 4-Digit Code | It protects profile access; it is not the same as a content-rating limit |
| Apple TV 4K device Restrictions | The Apple TV 4K device | Purchases and rentals, apps and media by rating or explicit language, selected Game Center activity, and some settings changes | Settings > General > Restrictions | Apple says these restrictions may not apply to apps downloaded from the App Store |
Apple describes a Kid profile as showing only age-appropriate content and search results based on the restrictions set by the manager. That makes a managed Kid profile the most direct way to give a child a separate, filtered Apple TV app experience. Device Restrictions are an additional safeguard, not a replacement for checking each service used in the home.

The menu names depend on where the Apple TV app is running. Apple documents the app on smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles as well as Apple TV hardware. On a television or console, open the Apple TV app and use the sidebar. On Apple TV 4K, some profile settings can appear under Settings > Apps > TV, while the device-wide controls remain under Settings > General > Restrictions.

- Have the managing adult available to complete the onscreen sign-in confirmation when a profile’s restrictions are edited.
- Decide the highest movie and television ratings the child may view before changing settings. Rating names differ between countries and regions.
- If the television is an Apple TV 4K, decide whether you also want a device passcode to protect purchases, rentals, apps, and explicit-content settings.
- List any streaming apps the child uses. Their controls may be separate from Apple’s controls.
You do not need an Apple TV 4K box simply to create Apple TV app profiles. If your smart TV, console, or streaming device supports the Apple TV app, the profile workflow can be available there. Apple TV 4K becomes relevant when you want its device-level Restrictions in addition to the app’s profile settings.
Create household profiles in the Apple TV app
Profiles separate recommendations, viewing history, and Watchlists. Each person can use a profile rather than changing one shared queue, and a child can have a managed profile with its own restrictions.
Add a profile from the Apple TV app
- Open the Apple TV app on the television, console, streaming device, or Apple TV 4K.
- Open the sidebar and select the profile picture or profile name at the top.
- Choose Add Profile. If the device instead starts you in Settings, open Settings > Profiles > Add New Profile.
- For an adult or an existing Apple Account user, select the option to use that account and complete the onscreen sign-in.
- For a managed household profile, choose Create Profile, enter the person’s name, and select an image.
- When offered, choose Kid for a child’s profile. If Apple asks which account manages it, select the responsible adult’s managing profile.
- Finish the onscreen prompts and return to the profile list to confirm that the new profile appears.
Apple says an Apple Account profile can create up to five managed profiles. If the add option is missing after that limit, review the existing managed profiles rather than repeatedly trying to create another one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the right profile type
- Adult or Apple Account profile: best for a household member who needs an independent Watchlist, history, and recommendations.
- Managed profile: useful when the manager wants to control the profile’s content and purchase settings.
- Kid profile: the managed option intended to present age-appropriate content and search results according to the restrictions set by the manager.
A profile type does not automatically establish the exact thriller boundary you want. Set the movie and television limits in the profile’s Restrictions screen after the profile is created.
Set movie and TV limits for a child profile
Use the Apple TV app’s profile Restrictions page to choose the highest allowed movie rating and television rating. These are separate choices because a child might be allowed a particular television rating while being blocked from movies at the same level, or vice versa.

Configure the profile
- Open the Apple TV app sidebar.
- Select Settings, then Profiles.
- Select the child’s managed or Kid profile.
- Choose Restrictions.
- If prompted, complete the managing account’s onscreen sign-in or confirmation.
- Set the highest allowed Movie Rating. To block R-rated movies where that label is offered, choose a rating below R; the available labels depend on your country or region.
- Set the highest allowed TV Rating separately. Choose the level that matches the age boundary you want for episodic thrillers.
- Review the purchase and rental setting and disallow those transactions if the child should not be able to obtain a title directly.
- Leave the Restrictions screen and switch to the child’s profile to verify that the profile displays the intended content range.
Apple’s guides note that the choices shown can depend on the device and region. Do not assume that an American rating label, a television rating, or an age number will appear exactly as it does in another country. Use the labels actually shown on the device and select the highest level you are comfortable allowing.
What the rating setting does and does not mean
The profile setting is a filter for the Apple TV app’s supported movie and television categories. It is not a guarantee that every title described informally as a thriller will be blocked. “Thriller” is a genre, not a universal age classification: a suspense series could have a low rating, while a violent film could have a high one. The rating controls therefore work by the displayed movie or TV classification rather than by the word “thriller.”

Search behavior also matters. Apple says Kid profiles present age-appropriate content and search results based on the manager’s restrictions. A child may still see a title’s existence in another service, on another profile, or in an app that does not use the Apple TV app’s profile controls.
Protect a profile with a four-digit access code
A profile code solves a different problem from a rating limit. It stops someone from opening a particular profile and viewing its recommendations, Watchlist, or history. It does not, by itself, set a movie or television rating.
- Open Settings > Profiles in the Apple TV app. On devices that place Apple TV app settings under the hardware menus, follow the on-screen path to the same Profiles area.
- Select the profile you want to protect.
- Choose Require 4-Digit Code.
- Enter and confirm the four-digit code when prompted.
Use this for an adult profile whose recommendations or viewing history should remain private, or when you do not want a child switching away from the controlled Kid profile. Keep the code different from a code the child already knows. If the child can freely switch into an unrestricted adult profile, the child profile’s rating limits will not be an effective household boundary.

Turn on Apple TV 4K device-level Restrictions
Apple TV 4K provides a second, device-wide control area. It can restrict purchases and rentals, access to apps and media by rating or explicit language, selected Game Center activity, and some settings changes. These controls protect the Apple TV 4K itself rather than just one Apple TV app profile.
Recommended Free Tools
Enable the device passcode
- On the Apple TV 4K Home Screen, open Settings.
- Choose General > Restrictions.
- Turn on Restrictions.
- Create a four-digit passcode and confirm it. This is the device’s restrictions passcode; decide whether it should differ from any profile access code.
- Review each available control for purchases and rentals, apps, media ratings, explicit language, Game Center, and settings activity.
- Set the strictest options that fit the household, then test the result from the child’s normal profile.
The exact list of switches can differ by Apple TV software version and region. If a setting described in Apple’s guide is not displayed, do not substitute an unrelated control; check the current menu on that device and the local availability of the feature.
Use device and profile controls together
A practical arrangement is to keep the child in a restricted Kid profile, require a code for adult profiles, and enable Apple TV 4K Restrictions for purchases and explicit content. The profile limits establish the child’s normal viewing experience. The device passcode reduces the chance that a child can bypass those limits by changing settings or purchasing content on the Apple TV 4K.
| Household goal | Use this setting first | Why add the other layer? |
|---|---|---|
| Give a child age-appropriate Apple TV app recommendations and search | Kid profile with movie and TV ratings | Device Restrictions can protect purchases and explicit-content settings |
| Stop a child opening an adult’s Watchlist or recommendations | Require 4-Digit Code on the adult profile | Rating limits are still needed on the child’s own profile |
| Prevent purchases and rentals on an Apple TV 4K | General > Restrictions | Profile purchase settings can provide an additional per-profile limit |
| Control a downloaded streaming app | That app’s own profile or parental-control settings | Apple warns Apple TV 4K device Restrictions may not apply to App Store apps |
Account for other streaming apps
Apple’s documented profile controls apply to the Apple TV app, and Apple’s device controls apply to the Apple TV 4K features listed in its guide. Apple also warns that device Restrictions may not apply to apps downloaded from the App Store. If a child watches thrillers through Netflix or another third-party service, open that service and look for its own child profile, maturity setting, title restriction, or parental PIN.
Do not infer that a blocked title in the Apple TV app is blocked everywhere on the television. A child could encounter the same program through a separate app, a direct purchase flow, a shared adult account, a connected device, or a web browser. Apply equivalent limits in each service the child can open, and use a profile code or device passcode to prevent switching to an unrestricted account.

Region, device, and menu-path limitations
- Country and region: Apple says availability and the choices presented can differ by country or region. Rating labels and age categories may not match the labels used in another market.
- Device type: Smart TVs, consoles, streaming devices, and Apple TV 4K can present different menu paths. Start in the Apple TV app sidebar on non-Apple hardware; on Apple TV 4K, profile settings may also be under Settings > Apps > TV.
- App source: Apple TV 4K Restrictions may not govern apps downloaded from the App Store. Those apps need their own controls.
- Content category: The documented controls use ratings, explicit-language settings, purchases, rentals, and app access. They do not promise to identify every thriller by genre or block every unsettling scene.
When a menu item is absent, first confirm that you are editing the intended profile and not the device’s General settings. Then check the device’s region and software availability. Avoid relying on a screenshot from a different type of television or an older interface.
Troubleshoot common bypasses and setup failures
The child can still see a thriller in search
- Confirm that the child is using the restricted Kid profile, not an adult profile.
- Reopen the profile’s Restrictions page and verify both the movie and TV limits; changing only one does not change the other.
- Check the title’s displayed rating and the region-specific rating labels. A genre label such as “thriller” is not itself the blocking category.
- If the result comes from another app, configure that app’s controls separately.
The child can switch to an unrestricted profile
Enable Require 4-Digit Code on each adult profile that should be private. Test switching profiles without revealing the code. A content limit on the Kid profile cannot prevent access to an unrestricted profile that remains open.
A purchase or rental is still possible
Check both the managed profile’s purchase/rental permission and the Apple TV 4K path Settings > General > Restrictions. Confirm that the device Restrictions passcode is enabled and that the child cannot change the setting. If the transaction originates in a third-party app, review that app’s purchase controls and account permissions.
The Restrictions menu is missing
The device-wide path is specific to Apple TV 4K. On a smart TV, console, or other streaming device, use the Apple TV app’s sidebar and its Profiles settings instead. If you are on Apple TV 4K and still cannot find it, check that you opened General, not the Apple TV app’s profile settings, and verify regional feature availability.
A blocked title appears on another device
Restrictions are not necessarily synchronized across every television, console, and streaming device in the home. Repeat the profile and app checks on each device the child uses. Where a service offers its own account-level parental controls, set them there rather than assuming the Apple TV app setting will carry over.
A reliable household setup checklist
- Create separate profiles for each regular viewer and designate the child’s managed profile as Kid when appropriate.
- Set both the highest allowed movie rating and highest allowed TV rating in the child profile’s Restrictions page.
- Disable profile purchases and rentals if the child should not initiate transactions.
- Require a four-digit code on adult profiles that contain unrestricted recommendations or private viewing history.
- On Apple TV 4K, enable Settings > General > Restrictions and set a device passcode.
- Review every installed streaming app and configure its own child profile, maturity limit, or PIN where available.
- Test the setup by switching to the child profile, searching for a title above the chosen limit, attempting to open an adult profile, and checking whether a purchase prompt is blocked.
- Repeat the test after a major device, app, account, or region change, because menus and available controls can vary.
What this setup can realistically prevent
Configured correctly, Apple TV app profile restrictions can narrow a child’s movie and television catalog, shape age-appropriate search results, and prevent purchases or rentals from that profile. A profile code can keep the child out of an adult profile, while Apple TV 4K Restrictions can add device-level protection for rated or explicit content and settings activity.
It is not accurate to promise that these settings block every thriller on every service. Apple’s own documentation limits the controls by app, device, content category, region, and availability. Treat the Apple TV app profile as the child’s controlled starting point, the Apple TV 4K passcode as a device safeguard, and each third-party service’s parental controls as a separate responsibility.
