For the most dependable Dolby Atmos setup, connect Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the soundbar, then connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV. This lets the soundbar receive Apple TV’s high-bandwidth Atmos audio directly. If the soundbar cannot pass your TV’s HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision signal, connect Apple TV 4K directly to a compatible TV HDMI input and send audio from the TV to the soundbar over eARC.
The correct cable, HDMI port, and audio-return setting determine whether you actually get 4K HDR video, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Apple Remote volume control.
Choose the right connection before plugging anything in
There are two workable layouts. Use the first whenever the soundbar accepts the video formats produced by Apple TV 4K:
Apple TV 4K HDMI out → soundbar HDMI in → soundbar HDMI out (TV/ARC/eARC) → TV HDMI input

This is Apple’s preferred arrangement for Atmos because the soundbar handles the Apple TV audio before forwarding video to the television. The second layout is useful when the soundbar lacks compatible HDR or Dolby Vision pass-through:
Apple TV 4K HDMI out → TV HDMI input; TV HDMI eARC → soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC
ARC can return some audio formats, but it is not equivalent to eARC. Apple states that Apple TV 4K uses a high-bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that does not work over ARC connections. The statement appears in Apple Support’s “Set up Dolby Atmos or surround sound on Apple TV with a sound bar or AV receiver,” published March 18, 2025.

Check the equipment and HDMI ports
Confirm these points before making the final connections:
- The television has an HDMI input that supports the 4K HDR format you intend to use. Some televisions enable HDR only on particular inputs; look for a label such as 4K, HDR, UHD, or Enhanced, or check the television manual.
- The soundbar has an HDMI input for Apple TV and an HDMI output labeled TV, ARC, or eARC. An optical-only soundbar cannot provide the preferred HDMI pass-through arrangement.
- The soundbar supports Dolby Atmos if Atmos is a priority. Its HDMI input and output must also pass the television’s HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision format when Apple TV is connected through it.
- You have a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Apple specifies this cable type for a 4K HDR television.
- The television and soundbar provide HDMI-CEC controls if you want the Apple Remote to adjust soundbar volume and power. Manufacturers use different names and menu locations for CEC.
- You have power available for Apple TV, the television, and the soundbar, plus a network connection and Apple Account credentials for the on-screen setup.
Set up the preferred Apple TV-to-soundbar-to-TV path
- Identify the correct television input. Choose the TV HDMI socket documented for 4K HDR, Enhanced, or a similar high-bandwidth mode. If the set has several HDMI versions, record which socket you used; selecting another input later can make HDR appear to be missing.
- Connect Apple TV 4K to the soundbar. Plug one end of the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable into Apple TV’s HDMI output and the other into the soundbar’s HDMI input. Do not use the soundbar’s ARC/eARC output for this first connection; that output is for the link to the TV.
- Connect the soundbar to the television. Run a second compatible HDMI cable from the soundbar HDMI output labeled TV, ARC, or eARC to the television input selected in step one.
- Apply power and select the input. Connect Apple TV to power, turn on the television and soundbar, and select the television input used by the soundbar. The TV should now display the Apple TV signal forwarded through the soundbar.
- Complete Apple TV’s initial setup. Follow the on-screen prompts for network access, Apple Account sign-in, and optional provider sign-in. Apple says an iPhone or iPad can speed this process. Keep the device nearby if you choose that method.
- Open the video and audio controls. On Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio. Confirm the selected video format and check whether Immersive Audio or Dolby Atmos is available.
- Enable the television’s control and return-audio functions when required. In the TV settings, turn on the manufacturer’s HDMI-CEC controls. Enable ARC or eARC controls if the menu requires them for the soundbar output. Names differ by manufacturer, so use the TV manual when the labels are unfamiliar.
- Check the soundbar input. Set it to the HDMI input used by Apple TV, not a Bluetooth, optical, or another HDMI source. The soundbar should report an Atmos signal during compatible playback; the exact indicator varies by model.
Use the direct-to-TV layout when the soundbar cannot pass HDR
A soundbar can accept Atmos audio yet fail to forward one or more of Apple TV’s video formats. If you see a black screen, an unstable picture, or a loss of Dolby Vision when Apple TV passes through the soundbar, bypass that video path:
- Connect Apple TV 4K directly to the television’s HDMI input that supports the required 4K HDR format.
- Connect the television’s HDMI port labeled eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC input. If both devices support the required eARC features, the TV can return audio from Apple TV to the soundbar.
- Turn on HDMI-CEC and eARC in the television and soundbar settings. The labels and defaults vary by manufacturer.
- Select the Apple TV input on the television and the TV/eARC input on the soundbar.
- Open Settings > Video and Audio on Apple TV and verify that Immersive Audio or Dolby Atmos is offered.
This arrangement prioritizes an unobstructed HDR video signal. It depends on both the TV and soundbar supporting the necessary eARC and audio pass-through behavior. If either device does not meet those requirements, the television may deliver sound but not the high-bandwidth Atmos signal Apple TV can provide.

Why ARC may not show Dolby Atmos
ARC is the older audio-return connection. Apple explicitly says its high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos form does not work over ARC. Therefore, an Apple TV connected to the TV with sound returned through ordinary ARC may produce stereo or another supported format even when the soundbar is labeled Atmos.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheseARC has greater bandwidth and is the appropriate return path when Apple TV is connected directly to a compatible TV. Even with eARC, the TV and soundbar must both support the formats being passed. If you need the most predictable Atmos result and your soundbar has a suitable HDMI input, use the direct Apple TV-to-soundbar connection instead of relying on the TV’s return channel.
Set Apple TV’s video and audio options
After the cables are connected, use Settings > Video and Audio as the central diagnostic screen.

Video format
Confirm that Apple TV has selected a format your TV can display. Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Vision up to 2160p/60 and HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG up to 2160p/60, provided the connected display and HDMI path support those formats. If the selected format is not accepted, choose a format supported by the TV and every device between Apple TV and the TV.
Match Dynamic Range
When appropriate, enable Match Dynamic Range. This allows Apple TV to switch output characteristics for content that uses a different dynamic range instead of forcing every title into one setting. Apple’s support guidance identifies this setting when diagnosing missing HDR.

Enable HDMI-CEC for one-remote control
HDMI-CEC allows devices to exchange power, input, and volume commands. Television manufacturers use different names for the feature, so the setting may not literally be called CEC. Turn it on in the TV and soundbar menus, then test the Apple Remote’s volume buttons.
If the buttons still do not adjust the soundbar, rerun Apple TV’s remote-control setup after CEC is enabled. Also confirm that the soundbar is receiving audio through the HDMI connection shown as TV, ARC, or eARC rather than through a separate input. CEC is a control feature; it does not increase the bandwidth available for HDR or Atmos.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Supported formats and what they mean
| Capability | Apple TV 4K specification or requirement | What must be true in your installation |
|---|---|---|
| Dolby Vision | Up to 2160p/60 | The TV, selected HDMI input, cable, and any soundbar pass-through must all accept Dolby Vision. |
| HDR10+ | Up to 2160p/60 | The TV and every HDMI device in the video path must pass HDR10+. |
| HDR10 | Up to 2160p/60 | The TV input and intermediate soundbar must support HDR10. |
| HLG | Up to 2160p/60 | The display path must accept HLG. |
| Dolby Atmos | Supported by Apple TV 4K | Use an Atmos-capable soundbar and, for Apple’s high-bandwidth form, connect Apple TV directly to the soundbar or use a compatible eARC path. |
| 4K HDR cabling | Compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable required by Apple for a 4K HDR TV | Use compatible cables for both HDMI links when the soundbar sits between Apple TV and the TV. |
Compare the two wiring choices
| Wiring | Atmos transport | HDR and Dolby Vision risk | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV → soundbar → TV | Most dependable route for Apple TV’s high-bandwidth Atmos | Depends on soundbar pass-through support for the TV’s formats | Use when the soundbar has HDMI input/output and passes the formats you need. |
| Apple TV → TV → eARC soundbar | Can carry the required audio when both TV and soundbar support eARC and the needed pass-through behavior | Usually avoids a soundbar video bottleneck | Use when the soundbar cannot pass HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision. |
| Apple TV → TV → ARC soundbar | Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos form does not work over ARC | Video may work, but audio can be reduced to another supported format | Use only when your audio requirements fit ARC’s capabilities. |
Also compare the number and version of HDMI ports and whether HDMI-CEC volume and power control work with the Apple Remote. A soundbar may have an Atmos decoder yet still be unsuitable as the video pass-through device if its HDMI output lacks the HDR format your TV uses.
Verify picture, HDR, sound, and control in order
- With Apple TV selected, confirm that a stable picture appears on the intended TV input.
- Open Settings > Video and Audio and verify the selected format. Check that the TV is using its 4K/HDR-capable input mode.
- Confirm that HDR or Dolby Vision appears when playing content mastered for that format. If the TV reports only standard dynamic range, use the HDR checks in the troubleshooting section.
- Check the soundbar display or information screen during compatible Atmos playback. The soundbar must be Atmos-capable and connected through the HDMI path selected for the installation.
- Press volume and power on the Apple Remote. If the commands fail, check HDMI-CEC on both devices and rerun remote-control setup.
Troubleshoot common failures
No picture
- Select the TV HDMI input connected to the soundbar output, or the Apple TV input if you used the direct-to-TV layout.
- Reseat both HDMI plugs at Apple TV, the soundbar, and the TV.
- Move the connection to the TV’s documented 4K/HDR-capable HDMI port.
- Confirm that the soundbar is powered on and set to the HDMI input receiving Apple TV.
HDR or Dolby Vision is missing
- Verify that the HDMI cable is compatible with 4K HDR. Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K HDR television.
- Check that the chosen TV input supports the missing format; some sets enable HDR only on selected sockets.
- Open Settings > Video and Audio and enable Match Dynamic Range when appropriate.
- If Apple TV passes through the soundbar, check that the bar passes the exact HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision format. If it does not, use the direct-to-TV and eARC layout.
There is no Dolby Atmos option
- Confirm that the soundbar itself supports Dolby Atmos.
- For the preferred path, connect Apple TV directly to the soundbar’s HDMI input, then connect the soundbar output to the TV.
- Return to Settings > Video and Audio after changing the wiring and check Immersive Audio or Dolby Atmos again.
- If Apple TV is connected to the TV, verify that the return link is eARC rather than ordinary ARC and that both devices support the required eARC behavior.
There is sound but no video
The soundbar may be accepting Apple TV audio while failing to pass the selected HDR or Dolby Vision video format. Connect Apple TV directly to a compatible TV input and use the TV’s eARC connection to the soundbar. Recheck the TV input and the Apple TV video format after switching.
The Apple Remote does not change volume
Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV and soundbar. Confirm that the soundbar is connected to the TV/ARC/eARC output, then rerun Apple TV remote-control setup. CEC menu names differ by television and soundbar manufacturer.
Changing from one layout to the other
Turn off or disconnect the devices before moving cables. For a switch to soundbar pass-through, move Apple TV’s HDMI cable to the soundbar HDMI input and run the soundbar output to the TV’s HDR-capable input. For a switch to direct-to-TV, move Apple TV’s HDMI cable to that TV input and connect the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar’s eARC input. After either change, select the new TV and soundbar inputs, enable any required CEC or eARC controls, and revisit Settings > Video and Audio.
