To set up Apple TV 4K, connect it to power and an HDMI display, connect it to the internet, choose your language and Siri preferences, then sign in with an Apple Account. You can transfer the account and Wi‑Fi details from an iPhone, or enter them manually. After setup, install apps from the App Store, create household profiles, and control the box with the included Siri Remote or a supported iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, TV remote, Home app remote, or infrared universal remote.
What you need before starting
Gather these items before turning on Apple TV 4K:
- Apple TV 4K and its power connection. The box must be connected to mains power.
- A television or other HDMI display. You need an available HDMI input.
- An HDMI cable. For 4K HDR output, Apple specifies an HDMI 2.0-or-later cable and a television that supports 4K, HDR, or both.
- Internet access. Wi‑Fi is available during setup. Models equipped with an Ethernet port can connect directly to a router with an Ethernet cable instead.
- An Apple Account. Apple TV can be started without immediately completing every account task, but an Apple Account is needed for a complete experience such as downloading apps and accessing account-based services.
- The included Siri Remote, if you plan to use it. It is not your only control option; Apple also supports several device-based and television-based alternatives.
Put the Apple TV close enough to the television and network equipment for the initial connection. If you are using a receiver or soundbar, decide whether Apple TV will connect directly to the television or pass through that device; whichever component receives the signal must support the video format you intend to use.
Connect Apple TV 4K to your display and network
1. Make the physical connections
- Plug Apple TV 4K into a power outlet.
- Connect an HDMI cable from Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the television, receiver, or other compatible display.
- Turn on the display and select the exact HDMI input used for Apple TV.
If the screen remains blank, confirm that the television is on the same input and that both ends of the HDMI cable are fully inserted. For 4K HDR, check the cable specification and the display’s 4K and HDR support before changing settings elsewhere.

2. Choose Wi‑Fi or Ethernet
During the onscreen setup, select your Wi‑Fi network and enter its password. If your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port, connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable and use that wired connection instead. Ethernet can be useful when the television is near the router or when you want to avoid wireless signal issues; Wi‑Fi is the simpler choice when running a cable is inconvenient.

Complete the first-run setup
1. Select language and region
Use the Siri Remote’s clickpad to choose the language and country or region. These selections influence available content and services, so select the location where the Apple TV will actually be used.
2. Decide whether to use Siri
When prompted, choose whether to use Siri where it is supported. Siri availability and some Siri features vary by country or region. You can still navigate Apple TV and search using other input methods if Siri is unavailable or you choose not to enable it.
3. Connect to the internet
Select a Wi‑Fi network and enter its password, or use Ethernet on a model with an Ethernet port. A working connection is required for account sign-in, software services, and downloading apps.

Apple presents two main paths:
- Set Up with iPhone: Select this option, unlock the iPhone, hold it near Apple TV, and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple describes this as the way to automatically add your Apple Account and Wi‑Fi settings to Apple TV.
- Set Up Manually: Enter the Wi‑Fi and Apple Account details directly on Apple TV with the remote. This is the practical option when you do not have a compatible iPhone nearby or prefer not to transfer settings.
Keep the iPhone unlocked and close to the Apple TV while the automatic process runs. If the prompt does not appear, continue with manual setup rather than repeatedly restarting the television; the manual route is built into the same setup flow.
5. Let setup finish
Follow any remaining onscreen prompts and allow Apple TV to complete its connection and account checks. Once the Home Screen appears, test navigation, open an app if one is already available, and confirm that the display is using the correct HDMI input.

Set up with an iPhone versus manual entry
| Method | What you need | What it transfers or requires | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set Up with iPhone | An unlocked iPhone held near Apple TV | Apple Account and Wi‑Fi settings can be added automatically by following the onscreen instructions | Fastest setup when the iPhone is available |
| Set Up Manually | The Siri Remote and your account and Wi‑Fi details | You enter Wi‑Fi and Apple Account information on Apple TV | Useful without a nearby iPhone or when you want direct control of the process |
Regardless of which method you choose, app availability, account features, and content can differ by country or region and by Apple TV hardware model.
Install and organize apps
Find apps in the App Store
Open the App Store from the Home Screen to browse available software, or use search to find a specific app. Select an app’s listing to view its information and choose the onscreen install command. The app then appears on the Home Screen when installation is complete.

The App Store is the source for Apple TV apps. Availability is not universal: an app or a particular program can be offered in one country or region and absent in another, and some apps require a compatible hardware model.
Sign in to apps and services
Installing an app does not necessarily sign you in to its service. Open the app and follow its own sign-in instructions. Some services use the Apple Account already associated with Apple TV; others require a separate account, an activation code, or a subscription managed by that service.
Manage subscriptions and Family Sharing
The Apple TV 4K user guide includes App Store, subscription, and Family Sharing features. Use the account and service screens shown on your Apple TV to review which account is active and to manage supported subscriptions. Family Sharing can make eligible purchases or subscriptions available to members of the same family group, subject to the service’s own rules and regional availability.

Keep the Home Screen usable
After installing several apps, arrange the ones you use most often near the front of the Home Screen. Place occasional-use apps farther back so the first row remains easy to reach with the clickpad. If an app is unavailable in your region or on your hardware model, changing the Home Screen layout will not make it appear; check the account region and compatibility requirements instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCreate household profiles and child restrictions
Why profiles matter
Profiles separate recommendations, watch history, and account context for different people using the same Apple TV. Each person can switch to their own profile before browsing or watching, reducing the chance that one viewer’s activity changes another viewer’s recommendations.
Add Apple Account and managed profiles
Use the profile-management controls on Apple TV to add household members with their Apple Accounts or to create managed profiles. Apple documents support for up to five managed profiles. A managed profile is useful when a household member should have a more limited, supervised experience rather than full account access.
Configure a kid profile
Kid profiles can receive age-based restrictions. Choose the age settings appropriate for the child and review them before handing over the remote. Profile switching can also be protected with a four-digit code, which helps prevent an unsupervised change to a different profile with fewer restrictions.
Profile features, available content, and restriction behavior can vary with region and hardware. Confirm the active profile whenever recommendations or account-specific content look unexpected.

Remote-control options for Apple TV 4K
The Siri Remote is included, but it is optional in practice. Apple supports several alternatives. The right choice depends on whether you need Siri and dictation, text entry, volume control, or simply navigation and playback.
| Remote option | Device required | Connection method | Setup effort | Controls available |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Siri Remote | Included Apple TV remote | Bluetooth connection to Apple TV | Use it during initial setup; pair it if prompted | Clickpad navigation, playback, Siri or search, dictation where supported, and charging |
| iPhone or iPad | iPhone with iOS 12 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 13 or later | Network connection to Apple TV | Open Apple TV Remote from Control Centre or the App Library and select Apple TV | Navigation, playback, text entry, and the controls shown in Apple TV Remote; Siri availability follows the device and region |
| Apple Watch | Apple Watch with the Remote app | Network connection to Apple TV | Open Remote, choose Apple TV, then use the watch controls | Swipes, taps, Digital Crown navigation, and playback controls |
| TV or receiver remote | A supported television or receiver remote | HDMI-CEC | Enable or use the television or receiver’s HDMI-CEC support, then test control | Usually navigation and playback; volume behavior depends on the television or receiver |
| Home app network remote | An iPhone or iPad with the remote added in the Home app | Home network | Add the remote as an accessory, assign its room, and give it a name | Controls exposed by the network-based remote and Home app setup |
| Universal infrared remote | A compatible IR universal remote | Infrared | On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote and follow the onscreen instructions | Buttons learned from the remote, generally navigation and playback functions you program |
Use the included Siri Remote
The Siri Remote uses a touch-enabled clickpad. Swipe or click to move through the interface, select items, and control playback. Its dedicated controls support navigation and playback, while Siri or search and dictation can speed up finding content where those features are supported. The remote also has a rechargeable battery, so connect it to its charging cable when the battery is low.
If the remote does not respond during setup, make sure it is charged and close to Apple TV. Re-follow the pairing prompt shown on the television rather than attempting to configure an unrelated remote-learning mode; the Learn Remote feature is intended for universal infrared remotes.
Control Apple TV with an iPhone or iPad
On a compatible iPhone or iPad connected to the same network as Apple TV, open Apple TV Remote from Control Centre or from the App Library. Apple says iPhones running iOS 12 or later and iPads running iPadOS 13 or later can activate remote controls automatically when connected to Apple TV 4K.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the network used by Apple TV.
- Open Control Centre, or open the Apple TV Remote from the App Library.
- Select the Apple TV 4K you want to control.
- Use the displayed navigation and playback controls; tap a text field when you need to enter search or account text.
If Apple TV does not appear, verify that both devices are on the same network, that Wi‑Fi is enabled on the mobile device, and that the Apple TV is awake. An iPhone or iPad remote is especially useful when typing passwords because the device’s keyboard is easier to use than onscreen character entry.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use an Apple Watch as the remote
Open the Remote app on Apple Watch and choose Apple TV. Swipes and taps provide navigation, the Digital Crown can be used for scrolling, and playback controls handle common viewing actions. This option is convenient for basic control when the watch is already on your wrist, but the small screen is less suitable for entering long account passwords or browsing large app catalogs.
Use a television, receiver, Home app, or infrared remote
HDMI-CEC remote
A supported television or receiver remote can control Apple TV over HDMI-CEC. The exact name and menu location of HDMI-CEC differs by television and receiver manufacturer. Enable the feature on the connected equipment if it is not already active, select the Apple TV input, and test directional, select, back, and playback buttons. Volume control is normally handled by the television or receiver and can vary with the equipment.
Network-based remote in the Home app
On an iPhone or iPad, add the network-based home-control remote as an accessory in the Home app. Assign it to a room and give it a name so it is easy to identify. This approach is useful when the household already uses Home app control, but it depends on the remote and Apple TV remaining reachable on the home network.

For a universal IR remote, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote on Apple TV 4K. Follow the onscreen instructions to teach Apple TV the buttons you want to use. Learning works with the remote’s infrared signals, so point it at Apple TV during each training step and choose buttons that are easy to remember. If a button does not work later, repeat the learning step for that button or select a different physical key.
Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
There is no picture
- Confirm Apple TV has power and the television is on.
- Select the HDMI input physically used by Apple TV.
- Reseat both HDMI connectors.
- For 4K HDR, use an HDMI 2.0-or-later cable and confirm that the display supports 4K HDR or the relevant format.
- If a receiver or soundbar is between Apple TV and the television, test a direct connection to the television to identify which component is preventing the signal.
Wi‑Fi setup fails
- Recheck the network name and password.
- Move Apple TV or the router to reduce wireless obstacles.
- If the model has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and continue with wired networking.
- Restart the router only after confirming that other devices also cannot reach the network; restarting will interrupt those devices.
Set Up with iPhone does not appear
- Unlock the iPhone and hold it near Apple TV when the setup screen requests it.
- Confirm the iPhone is using a supported current operating-system release and has network access.
- If automatic transfer still does not start, choose Set Up Manually and enter the Wi‑Fi and Apple Account details with the remote.
An app or program cannot be found
Check the Apple Account region, the app’s country or region availability, and the Apple TV hardware model. App and content catalogs are not identical everywhere, so an absent listing is not necessarily an installation error.
A profile shows the wrong recommendations
Switch to the intended profile before browsing or playing content. If a child can switch profiles, enable the four-digit profile-switching code and review the managed-profile restrictions.
The alternative remote cannot control Apple TV
- For iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch remotes, confirm the device and Apple TV are connected to the same network.
- For HDMI-CEC, confirm the feature is enabled on the television or receiver and that Apple TV is connected through a compatible HDMI path.
- For a Home app remote, check that it remains added as an accessory and that its room and name are configured.
- For an infrared remote, repeat Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote and teach the button again while pointing the remote at Apple TV.
A practical setup checklist
- Power connected and the correct HDMI input selected.
- HDMI 2.0 or later installed when 4K HDR is required.
- Television or display confirmed to support the desired 4K and HDR format.
- Wi‑Fi selected or Ethernet connected on a model with an Ethernet port.
- Language, country or region, and Siri preference chosen.
- Apple Account added with Set Up with iPhone or entered manually.
- Required apps installed from the App Store.
- Subscriptions and Family Sharing checked for the correct account.
- Household profiles created, with up to five managed profiles where needed.
- Kid restrictions and the four-digit profile-switching code configured when appropriate.
- Siri Remote charged, or an alternative remote tested and ready.
Which remote should you use?
Use the Siri Remote when you want the complete Apple TV control set, including clickpad navigation and Siri or dictation where supported. Choose an iPhone or iPad when text entry is important or the included remote is unavailable. Apple Watch is best for quick navigation and playback. A television or receiver remote is convenient when HDMI-CEC already links your equipment. The Home app option suits a network-based home-control setup, while a learned infrared remote is the practical choice for a universal remote that you already use for other devices.
Once the display, network, account, apps, profiles, and at least one working remote are configured, Apple TV 4K is ready for everyday viewing. Remember that Siri, app catalogs, content, and some account features can vary by country, region, and hardware model.
