There is no documented Google TV-to-Apple TV migration process. Set up Apple TV 4K as a new device, then download compatible Apple TV versions of your apps, sign in to each provider, and manually recreate your home-screen layout and device preferences. Provider accounts may restore cloud-saved access or profiles, but Google TV settings, local app data, and Google Play purchase ownership do not automatically move to tvOS.
What you need before setting up Apple TV 4K
Gather the hardware and account details first. The setup flow requires a television or display with an available HDMI input, an HDMI cable, power, an internet connection, and an Apple Account. You can connect through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on your Apple TV model and home network.
The Apple TV setup itself does not require a streaming subscription. Subscriptions are only needed for services you choose to use, and each provider controls its own account, billing, and device-access rules.

For 4K HDR, verify that both the Apple TV model and the television support the formats you intend to use. Apple’s setup guidance specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR, while its model information calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with a 4K HDR television. A cable that works for basic HD may not provide the bandwidth required for every 4K HDR combination, so check the model and display specifications before buying a replacement.

If Apple TV is connected through an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or other intermediary, check that every device in the chain supports the intended signal. For initial setup, connecting Apple TV directly to the television can make it easier to identify whether a cable or intermediary is causing a blank screen.
Have your account information ready
You will need the password for the Apple Account used on the Apple TV. Also collect credentials for the streaming, music, sports, or other services you plan to reinstall. If a service uses two-factor authentication, keep the trusted phone or authentication device nearby. A Google Account is not a substitute for an Apple Account during Apple TV setup.
Make a note of how each service was originally accessed. An email-and-password login, a phone number, a provider activation code, and an Apple, Google, or other federated sign-in can lead to different accounts. Using a different sign-in button on Apple TV can make an existing profile or watch history appear to be missing.
Create a migration inventory while Google TV still works
Before unplugging Google TV, write down the apps you actually use and the order in which you want them on the new device. Include apps in folders, occasional services, and apps used by other people in the household. Record provider account email addresses, profile names, parental-control requirements, and any activation details. This inventory is more reliable than trying to remember the catalog after the old device is disconnected.
Take screenshots or notes of Google TV picture, audio, caption, accessibility, network, and privacy choices if you want to reproduce a similar experience. These notes are a reference only: Apple TV may use different labels and offer different choices for the same television.
Choose automatic or manual Apple TV setup
Apple supports two practical setup paths. A nearby iPhone or iPad can speed up account and network entry; alternatively, you can complete the process with the Siri Remote. Neither method imports a Google TV app catalog or device configuration.

Automatic setup is convenient, but review the account shown on the iPhone or iPad before accepting it. A household may have separate Apple Accounts for purchases, subscriptions, or Home settings. Manual setup is slower but avoids accidentally using the wrong account.
Feature names and availability can vary by country, region, and hardware model. Follow the labels shown on your screen if they differ from the wording below.
How to set up Apple TV 4K step by step
- Connect the video cable. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into Apple TV 4K and the other into an HDMI input on the television or display.
- Connect power. Attach the Apple TV power cable and plug it into a suitable outlet. Apple TV does not receive power through HDMI.
- Select the correct input. Turn on the television and choose the HDMI input used for Apple TV. If you see a blank screen, confirm the input number and reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Start the onscreen setup. Use the Siri Remote to select your language and region. Continue until Apple TV asks for a network connection.
- Connect to the internet. Select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or connect an Ethernet cable if your model has an Ethernet port and you prefer a wired connection. A reliable connection is important for downloading apps and completing sign-ins.
- Sign in with an Apple Account. Enter the account credentials manually or use the nearby-iPhone/iPad setup option when offered. If you use a shared household account, decide whether that account should own purchases and subscriptions before proceeding.
- Review setup choices. Complete the prompts for Siri, TV-provider sign-in where supported, and household or Home settings relevant to your installation. Declining an option does not prevent you from configuring other parts of Apple TV later.
- Finish and wait for the Home screen. Allow any initial software or configuration process to complete. Keep Apple TV connected to power and the network while it finishes.
Do not start reinstalling every app while the network connection is still unstable. Finish the basic setup first, then verify that Apple TV can reach the internet before beginning downloads and account activation.

Can you transfer apps from Google TV to Apple TV?
Not directly. The official Apple and Google setup materials do not describe a Google TV-to-Apple TV transfer tool for apps, app data, or device settings. Google TV installs apps through its own Google Play-based environment, while Apple TV uses the Apple TV App Store and tvOS. Treat the change as a new platform setup rather than a device restore.
This is a platform boundary, not merely a missing button in the setup wizard. Apple TV cannot read the Google TV app catalog, determine which tvOS versions exist, or copy the old device’s local files. A third-party utility might make claims about migration, but the official setup instructions do not establish one, so do not plan the move around an unverified transfer promise.

Use an inventory instead of attempting a device clone
Before disconnecting Google TV, make a list of the apps and services you actually use. Include apps hidden in folders, services used only occasionally, and any apps installed for other household members. Record the email address or sign-in method for each service. This list becomes your migration checklist because Apple TV cannot read the Google TV app catalog and reproduce it automatically.
Separate the list into essential, occasional, and obsolete apps. Installing only the essential group first lets you test network performance, remote control, audio, captions, and account access before spending time rebuilding the entire old layout.
Install each Apple TV version
- From the Apple TV Home screen, open the App Store.
- Use Search to look up the service or app by name.
- Open the result and verify that it is the Apple TV version before selecting Get or the purchase/download control.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then open the app.
- Sign in with the account used by that service. Some providers offer an activation code or phone-based sign-in instead of typing a password with the remote.
- Repeat for every service on your inventory. If no Apple TV version appears, the provider may not support tvOS in your region or may require access through another device.
Apple also supports automatic installation of Apple TV versions of apps downloaded on an iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. This option can reduce searching for apps that have compatible Apple TV versions, but it still does not copy Google TV apps, local data, or Google TV preferences. It only concerns compatible Apple TV versions associated with that Apple Account.
After each installation, open the app immediately and test playback or the main function. A listing in the App Store confirms availability, not that your particular subscription, profile, region, or provider plan will work exactly as it did on Google TV.

The important distinction is between a provider account and a device account. A provider may keep a subscription, profile, or watch history online and make it available after a successful sign-in. That availability comes from the provider’s service, not from Apple TV importing Google TV data.
Will Google Play purchases work on Apple TV?
Do not assume they will. Google Play purchase ownership is tied to a Google Account and compatible Android devices, whereas Apple TV apps and purchases use Apple’s App Store and Apple Account. A service may let you access a subscription or previously created account on Apple TV after you sign in, but that is controlled by the service provider, not by a Google TV transfer feature.
For a paid app or rental, check the provider’s Apple TV listing and account policy before paying again. If the service uses an account-based subscription, sign in first and look for restored access. If it treats each platform as a separate purchase, the Apple TV version may require a new transaction.

Keep receipts or order details for purchases made through Google Play, the provider directly, or another platform. They can help the provider identify the correct account, but they do not change which store owns the transaction.
How to recreate your Google TV preferences on Apple TV
Reorder the Home screen
After installing apps, move the ones you use most often to the front of the Apple TV Home screen. Keep a short list of less-used apps in a consistent position so other household members can find them. The exact move-and-place gesture can vary with tvOS versions, so use the onscreen edit or rearrange command shown when an app is selected.
Rebuild display and audio choices
Open Apple TV settings and review video, audio, and display options for the connected television or receiver. Recheck resolution, dynamic-range behavior, and audio output rather than copying values from Google TV; the available choices depend on the Apple TV model and the display’s capabilities. Test a familiar video and a piece of content with the audio setup you normally use.
Reconfigure network and privacy settings
Confirm the intended Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, then review privacy, location, analytics, and account controls. These are device-level settings and are not supplied by Google TV profiles. If the Apple TV is moving to a different room or network, verify the connection again after any router or access-point changes.
Set up household and accessibility options
Revisit Siri, user or Home settings, captions, audio descriptions, text size, contrast, and other accessibility controls used by your household. Availability differs by region and hardware, so configure only the options presented on your Apple TV. Ask each regular viewer to test the settings in an app they use; some provider apps have their own caption or profile controls in addition to Apple TV settings.

Within each reinstalled app, check profiles, maturity controls, preferred language, subtitle defaults, downloads or offline options where offered, and linked television-provider access. These choices belong to the provider and may need to be restored separately even when the same account is used.

Apple TV shows no picture
- Verify that the television is on the HDMI input connected to Apple TV.
- Unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI input or a cable known to support the required 4K HDR specification.
- Temporarily disable intermediate receivers or switches to isolate the television-to-Apple TV connection.
- Confirm that the television and Apple TV model support the resolution and HDR combination you selected.
Wi-Fi setup fails or downloads stop
- Confirm the Wi-Fi password and test the same network with another device.
- Move Apple TV closer to the wireless access point or use Ethernet when available.
- Restart the network equipment and Apple TV, then retry the setup.
- If the network uses a sign-in page or enterprise authentication, check whether it supports streaming devices.
An app cannot be found in the App Store
Search using the service’s exact name and check the account’s country or region. Apple states that app and content availability can vary by region and hardware model. If the provider has no Apple TV version for your region, the Google TV installation cannot be copied; use another supported access method or contact the provider.
The app installs but your history or profile is missing
Confirm that you used the same provider account and sign-in method as on Google TV. A different email address, federated sign-in option, or child profile can create what appears to be a new account. If the correct account still lacks history, the provider may store that data only on the original platform or may not synchronize it to tvOS.

A paid feature is locked
Check whether the purchase was made through Google Play, through the provider’s own billing system, or through another platform. Google Play ownership does not automatically unlock an Apple App Store purchase. Follow the provider’s account and restoration instructions before buying anything again.
A household member cannot find their apps or settings
Check whether they used a separate Google TV profile, provider profile, or account. Apple TV setup does not recreate Google TV profiles automatically. Add or configure the Apple TV users and provider profiles that your household actually needs, then test each person’s sign-in.
