To set up a compatible smart-home accessory, use an iPhone or iPad—not a Mac. Open the Home app, create a home if prompted, turn on the accessory and connect it to your network, tap Add Accessory, then scan its QR code or enter its setup code. Finish by assigning the accessory to a room and giving it a name you can remember and use with Siri. The exact hub requirement depends on whether the accessory is a Home-compatible, Matter, or Thread-enabled Matter device.

This guide follows Apple’s current setup and troubleshooting instructions for iPhone and iPad, including the separate procedure for adding an Apple TV to a room.

What you need before adding a device

Gather the accessory, its power supply, the setup code or QR code, and the iPhone or iPad that will run the Home app. Keep the accessory close to the phone or tablet and to your router while pairing.

  • An iPhone or iPad: Apple states that accessories cannot be added to Home with a Mac. Use an iPhone or iPad for the initial pairing. Apple’s troubleshooting guide states this requirement directly.
  • Power and network access: Switch on the accessory and connect it to the network according to its manual before starting the Home-app flow.
  • The pairing information: The code may be printed on the accessory, its packaging, or its documentation. Apple Home codes can be eight digits; Matter setup codes can contain 11 or 21 digits. A QR code may be offered instead. Apple’s iPhone guide describes these options.
  • Bluetooth enabled: Bluetooth should be on during discovery and pairing. If Add Accessory is missing or discovery fails, Apple recommends checking Bluetooth along with software updates.
  • Any required manufacturer setup: Some products need a firmware update, bridge, hub, or initial setup in the manufacturer’s app. Check the device manual before assuming the Home app alone is sufficient.

Understand which type of accessory you have

Compatibility labels are not interchangeable. A product may be designed for Apple Home, use the Matter standard, or use Matter over Thread. Those choices affect whether you need a home hub or Thread-capable hardware.

Apple Home or HomeKit-compatible accessories

These accessories normally expose an Apple Home setup code or QR code. Follow the accessory’s instructions to power it and place it on the network, then add it from the Home app. The accessory manual remains the authority for any bridge, firmware, or network-band requirement.

Matter accessories

Apple’s home-hub documentation says a home hub is needed to add Matter accessories. However, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance adds an important software qualification: an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub. Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience, particularly when you want the broader Home features associated with a hub. Read the requirements for your exact accessory rather than treating every Matter product identically. See Apple’s home-hub requirements and its Matter troubleshooting guidance.

Matter over Thread

A Thread-enabled Matter accessory needs Thread-capable hub hardware or a supported third-party Thread border router, according to Apple. Apple lists HomePod mini and certain Apple TV 4K configurations among Thread-capable home hardware, but eligibility can vary by model and configuration. Confirm that the particular hub and accessory combination is supported before buying. Apple’s hub guide lists the relevant conditions.

Accessory situation What to verify before pairing Hub or border-router condition
Apple Home/HomeKit-compatible accessory Setup code or QR code, power, network, and any bridge or manufacturer-app step Follow the accessory’s documented requirements; the supplied Apple instructions do not impose one universal hub rule for every model
Matter accessory Matter setup code or QR code and the accessory’s network instructions Apple says a home hub is needed to add Matter, while an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter without one; a hub is recommended for the best experience
Matter over Thread All Matter requirements plus Thread support Thread-capable hub hardware or a supported third-party Thread border router is required; check the exact model and configuration

Set up a smart-home accessory in the Home app

1. Open Home and create a home if necessary

  1. Unlock your iPhone or iPad and open the Home app.
  2. If this is the first launch, follow the prompts to create a home. Apple’s setup flow can also guide you through defining rooms at this stage.
  3. Remain signed in to the Apple Account you intend to use for this home and keep the device connected while pairing.

The exact screen layout can change with iOS or iPadOS updates, but the pairing action is named Add Accessory.

2. Power and position the accessory

  1. Connect the accessory to power and complete any physical activation step described in its manual.
  2. Place it near the router and near the iPhone or iPad. A short distance helps discovery and reduces timeouts while the code is being verified.
  3. If the product uses a bridge or separate hub, power that hardware as well and complete the manufacturer’s required preparation.

3. Choose Add Accessory

  1. In Home, tap Add Accessory (or the add button that opens that action).
  2. Allow the app to scan for nearby accessories if requested.
  3. When the accessory appears, select it and continue with the onscreen instructions.

If the accessory does not appear, do not repeatedly enter a random code. Stop and use the troubleshooting branches below: discovery commonly depends on Bluetooth, current software, network compatibility, or a required manufacturer setup.

  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.

4. Scan the code or enter it manually

Use the iPhone or iPad camera to scan the QR code when one is provided. If scanning is unavailable, choose the manual-entry option and type the setup code exactly as printed. Apple says an Apple Home code may be eight digits, while Matter codes may be 11 or 21 digits. Look on the device, packaging, or included documentation if you cannot find it.

Keep the code’s format intact and distinguish similar characters. If the code has been removed or is unreadable, consult the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing; a reset or replacement code may be required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Handle a Matter device already paired elsewhere

A Matter accessory can be commissioned into more than one compatible ecosystem when the product and its first controller support that process. If Home cannot find a Matter device because it was already paired with another app:

  1. In the Home pairing flow, tap More Options.
  2. Select the accessory or Matter setup path offered there.
  3. Open the other app that currently manages the accessory and use it to generate a pairing code when Apple’s instructions request one.
  4. Return to Home and scan or enter that generated code.

Apple documents this “More Options” route in its iPhone setup guide. The labels in the other app are controlled by that accessory’s manufacturer.

6. Assign a room and choose a useful name

  1. When Home asks for a room, select the room where the accessory is physically installed.
  2. Give it a short, descriptive name such as “Desk lamp” or “Entry sensor,” rather than an ambiguous name shared by several devices.
  3. Finish the setup and wait for the accessory tile or control to appear in that room.

Apple says the name can be used with Siri. You can later change the room assignment and organize rooms into zones, so choose a clear starting structure without delaying setup.

7. Test the result before installing the device permanently

  1. Open the room in Home and select the new accessory.
  2. Use the available control once, such as switching a light or plug, to confirm that the accessory responds.
  3. If the control fails, leave the accessory near the router and phone while you troubleshoot instead of moving it to its final location immediately.

Add an Apple TV to your Home

Apple TV follows a different path from ordinary accessories. Apple says you add it by assigning it to a room in the Apple TV’s settings; adding other accessories to Home requires an iPhone or iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On Apple TV, open Settings.
  2. Select AirPlay and Apple Home.
  3. Choose Room.
  4. Select an existing room or create a new one.

After the room is selected, the Apple TV appears in the Home app. This does not replace the iPhone or iPad requirement for pairing lights, plugs, sensors, cameras, or other accessories.

When you need a home hub or Thread hardware

A hub changes what the home can do and which accessories can be added, but it is not a universal prerequisite for every setup. Make the decision from the accessory’s radio and standard, not from the product category alone.

Use the accessory’s exact requirements

Read both the box and the online or printed manual for references to Matter, Thread, a bridge, a home hub, or a supported border router. Apple’s own pages use model- and configuration-specific wording for eligible hardware, so a general statement such as “any Apple TV works” is too broad.

Understand the no-hub Matter exception

Apple’s troubleshooting article says an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub. That is a software-qualified exception, not proof that every Matter feature or every accessory works identically without a hub. Apple recommends a hub for the best experience. If a product’s manual requires a hub, follow that requirement.

Check Thread support before purchase

Thread Matter accessories need Thread-capable hub hardware or a supported third-party Thread border router. Apple names HomePod mini and certain Apple TV 4K configurations as examples of Thread-capable home hardware. Verify the exact device generation and configuration on Apple’s home-hub requirements page and in the accessory documentation.

Organize the home after pairing

Use rooms that match physical locations

Assign each accessory to the room where it operates. This makes the Home view easier to scan and gives voice commands a natural context. If you move a device, open its settings in Home and change its room assignment rather than deleting and pairing it again.

Create zones for larger homes

Apple allows rooms to be organized into zones. A zone can group related rooms, such as an upstairs area or an outdoor area, while the accessory remains assigned to its specific room. Establish zones only after the room layout is stable so you do not have to reorganize the same devices repeatedly.

Keep names distinct

Use one unique name per accessory in a room. Distinct names reduce confusion when Siri or the Home app presents several devices with similar functions. Apple specifically notes that accessory names can be used with Siri.

Troubleshoot missing accessories and failed pairing

“Add Accessory” is missing or the accessory is not discovered

  • Confirm that you are using an iPhone or iPad. A Mac cannot add accessories to Home.
  • Update iOS or iPadOS to the latest version available for the device.
  • Turn on Bluetooth.
  • Confirm that the accessory is powered on, nearby, and connected according to its manual.
  • Check whether a bridge, hub, firmware update, or manufacturer-app setup is required.

Apple lists these checks in its “If you can’t add a smart home accessory to the Home app” article.

“Unable to add to home” appears

  1. Verify that the accessory is receiving power.
  2. Move it closer to the router and try again.
  3. Restart any bridges and home hubs involved in the setup.
  4. If the accessory still cannot be added, reset it using the manufacturer’s documented reset procedure, then begin the Home setup again.

A reset can erase the accessory’s existing configuration, so use it only after the less disruptive checks. Apple recommends these steps for the “Unable to add to home” condition.

An incompatible-network alert appears

Check the Wi-Fi bands supported by the accessory and router. Apple notes that some accessories do not work with 5 GHz networks and may require a 2.4 GHz network. Consult the accessory manual for the supported band and for instructions on selecting or exposing a compatible network during setup.

The accessory is unsupported or its firmware is too old

Look for a firmware update in the manufacturer’s app. Apple recommends checking for an update when an accessory is not supported by the current Home setup. After updating, repeat the manufacturer’s required preparation and then try Add Accessory again.

A Matter accessory was paired in another app

Use More Options in Home and obtain a fresh pairing code from the app that currently manages the Matter device, as described in Apple’s Matter setup instructions. If the other app cannot generate a code, check its own documentation before resetting the device.

Choose compatible hardware before buying

When comparing products, evaluate the whole setup rather than the device category or the presence of an Apple Home logo alone.

Decision point Questions to answer Why it matters
Platform compatibility Is the exact model compatible with Apple Home, HomeKit, Matter, or a required bridge? A compatible label on a product family does not establish that every model or firmware version follows the same setup path.
Thread use Does the device use Thread, and do you already have compatible hub or border-router hardware? Thread-enabled Matter accessories have additional hardware conditions.
Home features Do you need remote access, sharing, or automations? These goals can affect whether Apple’s recommended hub arrangement is appropriate, even where a newer iPhone can perform basic Matter setup without a hub.
Network band Does the accessory support your available 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network? Some accessories are incompatible with 5 GHz and will fail during setup if the required band is unavailable.
Manufacturer involvement Does the product require its own app, bridge, firmware update, or reset procedure? Those steps can be necessary before Home can discover and commission the accessory.

A reliable setup checklist

  • Use an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac.
  • Update the iPhone or iPad and enable Bluetooth.
  • Confirm that the accessory is powered and near the phone and router.
  • Locate the QR code or the correct eight-, 11-, or 21-digit setup code.
  • Check whether the accessory is Home-compatible, Matter, or Matter over Thread.
  • Confirm hub, Thread border-router, bridge, network-band, and manufacturer-app requirements.
  • Open Home, create a home if prompted, and select Add Accessory.
  • Scan or enter the code exactly as shown.
  • For a Matter device paired elsewhere, use More Options and generate a code in the other app.
  • Assign a room, choose a distinct name, and test the control before final installation.

Apple’s step-by-step setup instructions are available in its iPhone Home guide, while the separate Apple TV procedure is documented at Apple Support.
