To set up Apple Pencil Pro on iPad mini 7, attach it to the magnetic connector along the iPad’s left side. The iPad mini (A17 Pro)—the model commonly called iPad mini 7—supports Apple Pencil Pro; iPad mini (6th generation) does not. Apple lists iPadOS 17.5 or later as a system requirement.
1. Confirm your iPad mini model
Apple Pencil Pro works with iPad mini (A17 Pro), commonly known as iPad mini 7. Apple’s compatibility list does not include iPad mini (6th generation) for Pencil Pro; that older mini supports Apple Pencil (2nd generation) instead. Apple Pencil (USB-C) is listed for both generations. Check your iPad’s model before trying to pair: the model name is what determines compatibility. See Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility list.
Apple lists iPadOS 17.5 or later as a requirement for Apple Pencil Pro. Its technical specifications include the compatibility and software requirement.
2. Pair Apple Pencil Pro
- Find the magnetic connector along the long side of the iPad mini (A17 Pro). Apple’s hardware guide identifies it on the left side. View the iPad mini (A17 Pro) guide.
- Place Apple Pencil Pro against the connector. Apple’s iPad User Guide says to attach the Pencil to the magnetic connector on the iPad’s long side; attaching it pairs the Pencil with the iPad.

3. Charge it and check the battery
Leave Apple Pencil Pro attached to the magnetic connector to charge it. Apple specifies that Bluetooth must be on for charging: check Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if needed. To check the Pencil’s charge, look in the Batteries widget or go to Settings > Apple Pencil.
4. Adjust Pencil Pro controls
Open Settings > Apple Pencil to adjust supported Pencil Pro controls. The available options include Squeeze, Double Tap, and Haptics. Apple describes these controls in its guide to drawing with Apple Pencil on iPad.

Squeeze
Squeeze the Pencil barrel to trigger an action, such as opening the tool palette or undoing an action. Configure what Squeeze does at Settings > Apple Pencil > Squeeze.

Double Tap
In supported apps, double-tapping the Pencil can switch back to the previous tool—for example, from a marker to an eraser. Choose the behavior at Settings > Apple Pencil > Double Tap.

Haptics
Haptics provide a light pulse when you squeeze or double-tap. Turn the feature on or off in Settings > Apple Pencil.
5. Use hover and barrel roll
Hover
Apple Pencil Pro hover is supported on iPad mini (A17 Pro). Hold the Pencil up to 12 mm above the display to preview tools and controls in apps that support hover. What appears depends on the app.

Barrel roll
Rotate the Pencil to change or preview the angle of supported tools, such as a highlighter or fountain pen. Apple names Freeform, Notes, and Markup as supported contexts for specified tools; some third-party apps may support barrel roll too.
If pairing does not work
First verify that the iPad is the iPad mini (A17 Pro), that it meets the iPadOS 17.5-or-later requirement, and that you are attaching the Pencil to the magnetic connector. Apple’s cited setup instructions explain normal pairing and charging but do not give a fault-specific recovery sequence, so avoid relying on an undocumented reset or device-removal procedure.
