To use Apple Music on Apple TV, complete the Apple TV’s hardware and network setup first, then open the Music app and choose content from its Home screen. On Apple TV 4K, the process is straightforward: connect the device by HDMI, finish the on-screen setup, open Music, and select an album, playlist, mix, or song. The exact screens can vary with your tvOS version, Apple TV model, country, or region.

This guide separates the two tasks so you can identify whether a problem belongs to the Apple TV connection or to Music app access.

Understand the two parts of the setup

“Setting up Apple Music on Apple TV” can mean two different things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Setting up the Apple TV hardware: connecting it to a television and power, selecting the correct HDMI input, connecting to broadband, and completing the device’s on-screen instructions.
  • Starting Apple Music: opening the Music app on the completed Apple TV, going to Home, browsing available recommendations, and starting playback.

Apple’s Apple TV 4K instructions cover the first task, while its Music guide covers the second. If your Apple TV is already working at the Home screen, skip directly to the Music app steps. If you are looking at a blank screen, an HDMI input message, or the initial setup prompts, complete the hardware setup first.

  • 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
  • Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
  • A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance

The steps below are based on Apple’s Apple TV 4K documentation. Other Apple TV hardware can have different capabilities or labels, and Apple says that features and content can vary by model and region. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup guide and Music app guide for the device-specific instructions.

What you need before starting

Requirement Why it matters Qualification
Apple TV 4K The cited Music setup steps are for Apple TV 4K. Menus and feature availability can differ on another Apple TV model.
Television with an HDMI port HDMI carries the Apple TV picture and sound to the television. Choose the television input connected to Apple TV after wiring it.
HDMI cable Connects Apple TV 4K to the television. For a 4K television that supports HDR, Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Apple notes that this cable is sold separately.
Power cable and outlet Apple TV must be powered before setup can begin. Use the power cable supplied for your device.
Broadband internet Apple TV uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet during setup and for online music playback. Apple’s setup flow lets you connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Apple Account An Apple Account is listed among Apple TV 4K setup requirements. Keep the account details available, but do not assume a particular sign-in screen; prompts can change by software version.
Apple Music subscription Required for full access to songs and Music app features. Apple’s documentation establishes the requirement for full access, not that every music-related function is unavailable without a subscription.

If your television is 4K and supports HDR, the cable specification is the most easily missed hardware detail. A standard cable may not provide the expected result in every 4K HDR setup, so use the compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable Apple calls for in that situation.

Set up the Apple TV 4K hardware

1. Connect Apple TV to the television

  1. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on Apple TV 4K.
  2. Plug the other end into an HDMI input on the television.
  3. Connect the Apple TV power cable and plug it into a power outlet.
  4. Turn on the television.
  5. Use the television remote to select the HDMI input where Apple TV is connected. For example, if the cable is in the television’s HDMI 2 port, select that input.

When the correct input is selected, the Apple TV setup screen should appear. If the television continues to show its own home screen or an “input not found” message, verify the selected HDMI input and both ends of the cable before proceeding. Apple’s setup instructions begin with this HDMI connection and input selection.

2. Follow the on-screen setup instructions

Use the Apple TV remote to follow the prompts shown on the television. The setup flow includes connecting the Apple TV to your network. Choose Wi-Fi when you want to join a wireless network, or Ethernet when you are connecting the Apple TV by cable to a network connection that supports it.

Keep the Apple Account listed in Apple’s prerequisites available while you work through the prompts. The exact account and authorization screens are not fixed in the retrieved Apple TV 4K hardware guide, so follow the labels currently displayed on your television rather than relying on an older menu path.

3. Use an iPhone or iPad to speed up setup

If you have a nearby iPhone or iPad, Apple provides a faster setup route. When the Apple TV prompt offers it, choose Set Up with iPhone or iPad and follow the instructions on the television and the nearby device. This option is presented during the initial setup flow; it is not a required step.

If you do not see that option, continue with the remote-based instructions shown on Apple TV. The essential requirements remain the same: an HDMI-connected television, power, broadband access, and an Apple Account.

Open Apple Music after Apple TV is ready

1. Launch the Music app

  1. From the Apple TV interface, open the Music app.
  2. Go to Home.

Apple describes Home as the starting point for browsing recommendations and listening choices. You do not need to search for a separate Apple Music installer in the setup sequence described by Apple; the relevant action is to open Music on the completed Apple TV.

2. Browse the Home screen

The Home screen can show personalized rows such as Top Picks, Recently Played, Made for You, and Stations for You. The rows you see depend on the account, available content, region, and current software. Select a row or item to inspect its listening options.

If a row or recommendation is not displayed, that does not necessarily indicate a hardware fault. Apple warns that features and content are not available in every country or region or on every Apple TV model.

3. Choose an album, playlist, or mix

  1. Highlight the album, playlist, or mix you want to hear.
  2. Select it to open its track list and playback choices.
  3. Choose Play to start from the beginning, Shuffle to play in a shuffled order, or select an individual song.

After you select a track or playback option, Apple TV opens the Now Playing screen. That screen provides playback controls and can show lyrics when they are available for the song.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Use Now Playing controls

Now Playing is where you manage the session after music starts. Use the controls presented on that screen to manage playback. Lyrics are conditional: Apple says they appear when available, so their absence for a particular song is not automatically a setup problem.

What an Apple Music subscription changes

Apple’s wording is specific: Full access to songs and features on the Apple Music app requires an Apple Music subscription. That requirement applies to Apple TV 4K use of the Music app. It does not establish that every music-related function disappears without a subscription, so avoid treating the app as universally unusable when no subscription is active.

If Music opens but a song or feature is not available, check whether the Apple Account being used has the Apple Music access you expect. The cited Apple TV guides do not provide a universal subscription purchase path or a single account menu that applies to every tvOS release, so use the current prompts on your Apple TV instead of following instructions written for a different device.

  1. Open Music.
  2. Select Home.
  3. Browse the available rows, including recommendations or recently played items when shown.
  4. Choose an album, playlist, or mix.
  5. Select Play, Shuffle, or an individual song.

If this route reaches Music but content is missing, the relevant checks are account access, subscription status, region, model, and the tvOS version—not the physical HDMI installation.

Account sign-in: what Apple’s guides do and do not establish

The Apple TV Music guide explains opening Music and browsing from Home, but it does not document a universal first-launch sign-in sequence or a separate Apple TV authorization procedure. For that reason, do not assume that every Apple TV will show a particular QR code, code-entry page, or account menu.

Apple has a separate article about getting the Apple Music app on supported smart TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices. That article describes sign-in methods for those device categories, but it is not a specific Apple TV 4K sign-in guide. You can read it at Apple’s supported-device article, but do not transplant its prompts into Apple TV instructions unless the current Apple TV screen actually shows them.

When Apple TV displays an account prompt, follow the wording on that screen. If the prompt does not appear, continue to Music and use the options Apple TV presents in the current tvOS interface. The absence of a documented universal sequence is a reason to rely on the live prompt, not to invent a button path.

Troubleshoot by identifying where setup stops

The television shows no Apple TV setup screen

  • Confirm that Apple TV is connected to power.
  • Confirm that the HDMI cable is connected at both ends.
  • Switch the television to the exact HDMI input used by Apple TV.
  • If the television is 4K with HDR, verify that the cable meets Apple’s compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI requirement.

These checks address the hardware path described in Apple’s setup instructions. Do not troubleshoot Music account access until the Apple TV picture is visible and the initial setup can proceed.

Apple TV cannot complete network setup

  • Follow the on-screen network instructions and choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet as appropriate.
  • Confirm that the intended broadband connection is available before continuing.
  • If you selected Wi-Fi, make sure you are choosing the network you intend to use; if you selected Ethernet, verify that the wired connection is attached.
  • If a nearby iPhone or iPad is being used for setup, you can instead continue with the remote-based prompts if the assisted route does not complete.

Apple’s cited hardware guide recommends following the on-screen instructions for network setup but does not publish a universal error-code procedure. The correct recovery therefore depends on the prompt currently shown on your Apple TV.

Music opens, but the expected rows are missing

Return to Home and inspect the content that is actually offered. Apple’s examples—Top Picks, Recently Played, Made for You, and Stations for You—are examples of personalized rows, not a guarantee that every account will show every row. Content can vary by country or region and by Apple TV hardware model.

Also distinguish a missing recommendation from missing access to a specific song. Recommendations can change with account activity and availability; full access to songs and features is tied to the Apple Music subscription requirement described above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A song, playlist, or mix opens but will not play as expected

  • Open the item and check whether the track list and the Play or Shuffle choices are available.
  • Check that the Apple Account and subscription access shown by the current Apple TV prompts are the ones you intend to use.
  • Consider regional or hardware availability, since Apple says that not all content and features are offered everywhere or on every model.
  • If the playback screen appears, use Now Playing to determine whether the issue is selection or playback; lyrics may be absent simply because they are not available for that song.

Apple’s Music guide does not define one universal error-repair sequence for every playback failure, so avoid applying a sign-in or reset procedure from another device category without confirming that it matches your Apple TV screen.

The screens do not match an older guide

Apple identifies tvOS 27 in its current Apple TV User Guide and notes that tvOS 27 introduces redesigned Podcasts and Music apps. Earlier tvOS guide versions are also listed. As a result, labels, layout, and the position of controls can change even though the high-level route remains Music then Home.

Use Apple’s current Apple TV 4K User Guide when your screen differs from a screenshot or older article. Look for the same function rather than an identical visual layout.

Regional and model limitations

Apple states that not all features and content are available in every country or region or on all Apple TV hardware models. Apple’s separate supported-device documentation also warns that Apple Music app availability, features, and supported devices vary by region. Those qualifications matter when comparing what you see with an instruction written for another market or model.

For a reliable diagnosis, record three details before seeking further help: the Apple TV hardware model, the tvOS version, and the country or region associated with the service. A difference in any of those can explain why a row, feature, or prompt is absent.

Completion checklist

  • Apple TV 4K is connected to the television through HDMI.
  • The television is set to the HDMI input used by Apple TV.
  • Apple TV has power and completed its on-screen setup.
  • Wi-Fi or Ethernet broadband setup is complete.
  • The Apple Account required by the setup flow is available.
  • The Music app opens and its Home screen is visible.
  • An album, playlist, mix, or song can be selected.
  • Play, Shuffle, or an individual track starts playback when the account and regional availability permit it.
  • Now Playing opens, with lyrics shown when they are available.

Once those checks pass, Apple Music is set up for normal use on that Apple TV. Future differences in rows or labels should be evaluated against the tvOS version, Apple TV model, account access, and region rather than treated as evidence that the initial HDMI setup failed.
