Google Quick Share lets you send files in either direction between an Android phone or tablet and a Windows computer. Android 6 and newer devices include Quick Share; on Windows, install the Quick Share app, use a compatible 64-bit edition, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and make the computer discoverable. Keep both devices within five metres and have the recipient approve the transfer.
This guide covers compatibility, installation, privacy settings, both transfer directions, and the fixes for devices that do not appear.
Quick Share in plain terms
Quick Share is a nearby-device sharing feature rather than an email or cloud-storage workflow. You select files on one device, choose the other device from the nearby list, and the receiving user approves the request. It works from Android to Windows and from Windows to Android, so you can use whichever device currently contains the files.

The two devices do not need the same brand. A non-Samsung Windows computer uses Google’s Quick Share for Windows app, while a Samsung computer uses Samsung’s Quick Share app. The important conditions are a supported operating system, active Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, suitable visibility settings, close proximity, and an available recipient.

What you need before setting up Quick Share
Quick Share is built into supported Android devices and is provided on Windows through a separate app. It is designed for nearby transfers between your own devices or between devices whose owners can approve an incoming file. The official Android overview is available at Google’s Quick Share file-transfer page.
- An Android phone or tablet running Android 6 or later.
- A Windows PC with a supported 64-bit Windows installation.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on the Windows computer.
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location enabled on both devices when discovery problems occur.
- Both devices close together. Google’s guidance is within five metres.
- A visibility setting that allows the other device to discover the phone or PC.
- The recipient available to accept the incoming transfer.
No cable, adapter, or other physical purchase is identified as necessary for this setup. You use Quick Share already included on Android and the official Windows application.
Before beginning, put the phone or tablet and computer in the same room and keep them within the five-metre range. This avoids mistaking a distance problem for an installation problem. Also decide which device will receive the first test file; that device must be ready to display and approve the incoming request.

Google lists the standard Windows requirement and the Samsung-PC exception on its Quick Share app for Windows page. If you are unsure whether your PC is ARM-based or 64-bit, check Windows’ System or About settings before downloading and troubleshooting.
Architecture matters independently of the computer’s brand. A standard 64-bit Windows 10 or later machine follows Google’s normal app path. An ARM-based machine must meet the stricter Windows 11-or-later requirement. A Samsung-branded computer is a separate case: use Samsung’s Store app rather than assuming Google’s installer is the right one.
Install Quick Share on Windows
- Identify the correct app. Use Google’s Quick Share app on a non-Samsung PC. If the computer is a Samsung PC, use Samsung’s Quick Share app from Microsoft Store instead.
- Download from the official source. Start at Google’s Android file-transfer page and follow its Windows download link. Avoid unofficial installers.
- Run the installer. Complete the Windows installation prompts, then open Quick Share.
- Allow the app to use the wireless hardware it needs. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in Windows. If Windows asks for permission during setup, allow the requested access so the computer can be discovered.
- Open the visibility controls. Quick Share includes a setting that determines who can discover the computer. Choose the narrowest option that still allows your Android device or intended sender to find it.
- Leave the app ready to receive. Keep Quick Share open or available in Windows while you start the transfer from Android. The computer must remain nearby and discoverable.
The Windows installation is required even though Android includes Quick Share. Installing an app on the phone is not normally necessary when the phone runs Android 6 or later.
After installation, do not start by sending a large batch. First make the PC visible and test with one ordinary file. A single-file test confirms that the app, wireless connections, visibility choice, and recipient prompt are all working before you commit to a longer transfer.

Prepare the Android phone or tablet
- Confirm the Android version. Quick Share is included on Android 6 and newer devices.
- Turn on wireless discovery if needed. Enable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Location when the Windows computer does not appear. These are the first settings Google recommends checking for an unsupported or undiscovered device.
- Bring the devices together. Place the phone or tablet and PC within five metres of one another.
- Review Android visibility. Open Quick Share from the Android sharing interface or device settings and select a visibility choice that permits the Windows computer to find the phone. You can narrow discovery again after the transfer.
- Keep the screen and prompts available. The receiving device may ask its user to accept the file. Do not dismiss that prompt while testing the connection.
Android does not normally need an additional Quick Share download. If the phone is running Android 6 or later, look for Quick Share in the share interface or device settings. The visibility setting is the key control: a phone can have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled yet remain absent from the PC’s list if its chosen visibility excludes that PC.
Send files from Android to Windows
- Select the content on Android. Open the Gallery, Files, or another app containing the photos or files, select one or more items, and tap the Android share control.
- Choose Quick Share. The nearby-device list opens. Wait for the compatible Windows computer to appear.
- Select the Windows PC. Tap the computer’s entry. If it is missing, stop and work through the discovery checks in the troubleshooting section rather than repeatedly sending.
- Accept on Windows if prompted. The Windows recipient must approve an incoming transfer. The transfer cannot finish until that approval is given.
- Keep both devices close. Leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and keep the phone and computer within five metres until Quick Share reports completion.
This direction is useful for moving photos, downloaded documents, or other selected Android files onto the PC without sending them through email. The Android device initiates the share; Windows acts as the receiving device.
If several nearby devices appear, compare the displayed device name with the computer you intend to use before tapping it. The recipient’s approval is a deliberate second check, not a step to skip. If the Windows user rejects or dismisses the prompt, no completed transfer occurs; select the PC and try again after confirming that it is still visible.
Send files or folders from Windows to Android
- Open Quick Share on the PC. Launch the Windows app and check that its visibility setting allows the Android device to discover or receive from it.
- Choose what to send. Use the app’s file picker to select files or folders, or drag them into the Quick Share window.
- Select the Android device. Choose the phone or tablet from the nearby-device list.
- Approve the transfer on Android. The recipient must accept the incoming files when the Android prompt appears.
- Wait for completion. Keep both devices within five metres and leave wireless connections enabled while the files transfer.
Windows Quick Share supports sending folders as well as individual files. The Android device is the recipient in this direction, so its owner controls whether the transfer proceeds.
Dragging a folder into the app is useful when the files are already organized on the PC; the file-picker route is useful when you need to choose specific items. In either case, selecting the Android device only starts the request. Keep watching the phone or tablet for the approval prompt and leave the app open until the transfer finishes.
Control who can discover your devices
Quick Share does not require you to leave a device visible to everyone permanently. Its visibility controls determine which potential senders can see the phone or PC. Before a transfer, set visibility broadly enough for the intended device to appear; afterward, use a more restrictive choice if you do not want unsolicited discovery.
For a private transfer
Use the narrowest available visibility option that includes the person or device you trust. Confirm that the correct computer or phone name appears before accepting. If an unexpected sender appears, decline the request instead of accepting it.

For receiving from another person
Temporarily select a visibility setting that allows that person’s device to discover you. Tell the sender which device name to choose, then return to a restricted setting once the transfer is complete.
Recipient approval is always part of the workflow
Discovery does not automatically grant access. Google’s workflow requires the receiving user to accept an incoming file. This gives the recipient an opportunity to reject an unknown, unwanted, or suspicious transfer.
A practical sequence is to widen visibility, send or receive the files, confirm completion, and immediately narrow visibility again. This keeps the setup convenient for the one exchange without leaving the device discoverable longer than necessary. Visibility is independent on each device, so check both the phone and PC when one direction works and the other does not.
Privacy and security
Google states that “All Quick Share transfers are protected by E2E encryption.” The statement appears on Google’s Android Quick Share information page. Encryption protects the transfer while it is being sent, but it does not make an unwanted file trustworthy. Only accept files you recognize and expect.
- Use visibility controls to limit who can discover the device.
- Check the sender or recipient name before confirming.
- Decline unexpected requests.
- Keep the official Windows application updated through its official distribution channel.
- On a Samsung PC, use the Samsung application rather than trying to force Google’s non-Samsung Windows app onto it.
End-to-end encryption and recipient approval address different risks. Encryption protects the transfer path; approval lets the person at the receiving device decide whether to accept a request. Neither changes the need to use a visibility setting appropriate to the situation or to decline files you do not recognize.

Check the basic wireless settings
- Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled on the Windows PC and Android device.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Enable Location on both devices, particularly when discovery fails.
- Move the devices closer together, staying within Google’s five-metre guidance.
- Reopen Quick Share after changing visibility or wireless settings, then check the nearby-device list again.
Verify visibility on both sides
A device can be powered on and still remain invisible if its Quick Share visibility setting excludes the other device. Temporarily choose a setting that permits discovery, retry the transfer, and then restrict visibility after the exchange.
Check Windows architecture and edition
Google’s Windows app is listed for 64-bit Windows 10 and later. ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11 or later according to Google’s current page. If the computer falls outside those requirements, install the app on a supported PC instead of treating the failure as a wireless problem.

Use the correct app on a Samsung PC
Google says its Quick Share for Windows app is intended for non-Samsung PCs. On a Samsung PC, install Samsung’s Quick Share app from Microsoft Store and keep it updated, especially when receiving files from a non-Samsung Android device.
The recipient never sees an approval prompt
Check that the recipient device is still visible, nearby, and running Quick Share. The sender should select the correct device entry, while the recipient should watch for and accept the incoming request. If the recipient declines or dismisses it, start the transfer again.

The transfer stops partway through
Keep both devices within five metres, leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and avoid changing visibility during the transfer. If it still fails, confirm that the original file selection is available and retry after checking the compatibility and discovery requirements above.
One direction works but the other does not
Test each direction separately. Android-to-Windows requires the PC to be visible as a recipient; Windows-to-Android requires the phone or tablet to be visible and ready to approve. Recheck the visibility setting on the device that is missing from the sender’s list rather than assuming that a successful transfer in the opposite direction proves both settings are correct.
The app is installed but the PC is still unsupported
Installation alone cannot overcome an unsupported architecture, Windows edition, or Samsung-PC app mismatch. Confirm whether the installation is 64-bit, whether the standard PC runs Windows 10 or later, and whether an ARM PC runs Windows 11 or later. If those conditions are not met, use another compatible computer rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same app.

Run through this list in order when setting up a new computer. Compatibility comes first, followed by the correct app, wireless settings, visibility, proximity, and approval. That order prevents spending time on pairing or transfer attempts when the Windows installation itself is not supported.

Google’s guidance is to keep the Android device and Windows computer within five metres. Keep them that close, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, until the transfer reports completion.
Is Quick Share secure, and how do I protect my device from junk or viruses?
