Set up a QD-OLED monitor by first selecting its native resolution and a refresh rate supported by both the monitor and graphics card, then choosing the intended SDR or HDR mode in the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD). For Windows 11 HDR, Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app can tune visible black and highlight thresholds and maximum brightness for that display. There is no universal QD-OLED OSD preset: follow the exact model’s manual for its controls and panel-care routines.
How to set up a QD-OLED monitor
- Identify the exact model. Check the monitor label and its manufacturer support page or manual. Confirm the native resolution, supported refresh rates, compatible input ports, cable requirements, and recommended OSD settings for that model. Cable and port requirements are not universal.
- Connect the monitor and select its native resolution. In your operating system’s display settings, choose the native resolution listed in the manual. As one model-specific example, the Philips 34M2C8600 manual identifies 3440 × 1440 as native: Philips 34M2C8600 manual.
- Set a supported refresh rate. Pick a rate supported by both the monitor and the graphics card over the connection you are using. Check the manual for model-specific limits rather than assuming every port, cable, or QD-OLED display supports the same maximum.
- Select the intended picture mode in the OSD. Choose the monitor’s SDR or HDR mode as appropriate for what you plan to view. Exact mode names, brightness controls, and color options vary by model. Avoid post-processing modes while calibrating if they alter test patterns; Microsoft warns that active monitor post-processing can make its HDR Calibration app behave unexpectedly. Leave factory color values unchanged unless the manual recommends an adjustment or instrument-based measurements give you a reason to change them. See Microsoft’s HDR Calibration guidance.
For example, MSI lists 99% DCI-P3 coverage and a Delta E ≤ 2 accuracy claim for its MAG 273QP QD-OLED X24. Those are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent measurements or figures that can be assumed for QD-OLED monitors as a category. The MSI product page also illustrates why the exact model page matters when checking features and support.
How to calibrate HDR on a QD-OLED monitor in Windows 11
Windows HDR Calibration is an optional software workflow for Windows 11, not a universal hardware-calibration requirement. It is intended for an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled and must run full screen on the display you want to calibrate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > HDR and turn HDR on for the QD-OLED monitor.
- Install and open the Windows HDR Calibration app. If more than one display is connected, open it full screen on the QD-OLED you are calibrating.
- Follow the app’s three test patterns. Adjust each control until its pattern is no longer visible. The patterns set thresholds for the darkest visible details, brightest visible details, and the display’s maximum brightness.
- If you adjust SDR/HDR saturation in the app, do so cautiously. Too much saturation can make colors look unnatural.
Microsoft lists these graphics requirements for the app: AMD RX 400-series or newer, or Ryzen processors with Radeon Graphics; Intel 11th-generation integrated graphics or newer, or DG1 discrete graphics or newer; NVIDIA GTX 10-series or newer; and a display driver supporting WDDM 2.7 or newer. Confirm driver support on your computer, particularly if you need the app’s saturation control. Microsoft’s full requirements and steps are in its Windows HDR Calibration guidance.

Use your normal viewing conditions
Calibrate in the lighting you normally use. Microsoft’s instruction is: “Use the app in the same lighting conditions that you normally use for your HDR display.” Run the app again after a meaningful display-setup change, such as adding or replacing a display. If the profile created by the app causes a problem, Microsoft documents removing it under Control Panel > Color Management > All Profiles.
Should HDR stay on for SDR desktop use?
There is no single setting that suits every monitor and workflow. Windows treats SDR and HDR luminance differently, and HDR display quality varies. Whether to leave HDR enabled while working with SDR content depends on your display and how you use it; do not assume one slider value or an always-on HDR setting is correct for every setup. Microsoft’s Advanced Color overview explains Windows HDR behavior and notes that certifications such as VESA DisplayHDR identify displays that meet a certification program, not a universal OSD recipe.

Enable the monitor’s panel-care features
Use the protective options and maintenance routines specified for your model, and do not disable them based on generic advice. Their names and operation differ. MSI documents Pixel Shift, Pixel Refresh, static-screen detection, boundary detection, taskbar detection, and logo detection for the MAG 273QP QD-OLED X24. The Philips 34M2C8600 manual advises enabling its screen saver and Pixel Orbiting. These are model examples, not settings shared by every QD-OLED monitor. Consult your own manual and allow the manufacturer’s maintenance routines to run.

If Windows does not show an HDR certification label for a covered MSI monitor, MSI says installing that monitor’s official INF driver can make the label appear in Advanced Display.
