To set up an XRP Ledger wallet safely, first decide whether a provider or you will control the account’s keys. Then obtain wallet software from its official source, create or restore the account using its documented steps, and protect its recovery secret offline. Before funding or signing, check current network requirements and review what each transaction will do.
Choose who controls the wallet keys
A wallet is an interface for accessing an account; the key custody model determines who can authorize transactions and who is responsible for recovery. The XRP Ledger’s wallet guidance distinguishes custodial services from non-custodial wallets.

Neither arrangement eliminates security risks: with custody, you rely on the provider’s controls; with self-custody, you take on key protection and recovery.

- Use the official source. Find the wallet provider’s official website or app listing independently. Avoid download links sent by strangers. Wallet software and its dependencies can introduce supply-chain risks, as the XRPL wallet guidance explains.
- Follow the wallet’s documented account flow. Create a new account or restore one only through that wallet’s instructions. The exact screens depend on the wallet; do not assume a particular recovery method is supported unless its documentation says so.
- Back up the recovery secret safely. Keep the seed, private key, or equivalent recovery material private and offline. Do not put it in email, chat, screenshots, cloud notes, or a website that claims to validate, sync, or unlock your account. XRPL’s cryptographic keys guidance advises against sending secret keys over the internet and recommends encrypted storage if secrets must be saved.
- Confirm access before depositing meaningful funds. Make sure you understand how the wallet displays the account and how its documented recovery process works. Never test recovery by entering a secret into an unverified site or sharing it with support.
Protect the recovery secret and signing process
Anyone who obtains the secret can sign transactions for the account. Never share it with another person, a support agent, a website, or a public server. Applied transactions cannot be reversed by a privileged administrator, so a compromised signing secret can have lasting consequences. The XRPL key documentation describes account keys and the risks of losing control of them.

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Keep the recovery backup separate from everyday devices and accounts where practical.
- Use only wallet software and updates from the provider’s official source.
- Review transaction details on the trusted wallet or signing device before approving.
- Do not configure software in a way that exposes secret keys to outside sources.
A public server can be used to monitor public ledger activity without sending it the signing secret. Keep observation and transaction authorization distinct; the latter must remain under your control or that of your chosen custodian. See XRPL’s secure signing guidance.
Choose a signing setup that fits your needs

A hardware wallet is an optional signing method, not a replacement for a secure recovery backup or careful transaction review. XRPL’s secure signing documentation describes dedicated signing devices, including the Ledger Nano S, and notes that some devices may not support every transaction type. Check current manufacturer and wallet documentation rather than relying on an older model name or a general compatibility claim.

Air-gapped signing is an advanced setup, not an automatic security upgrade. XRPL’s offline account setup tutorial covers offline signing and transfer of signed transaction data; the offline device, software, transfer media, and physical access still need protection.

Check XRP Ledger funding requirements before sending XRP
The XRP Ledger requires an account reserve, and owned ledger objects can increase the reserve requirement. XRPL’s reserve documentation listed Mainnet’s base reserve as 1 XRP and the owner reserve as 0.2 XRP per owned ledger object when reviewed in 2026. These are adjustable protocol settings, not wallet-provider fees; other networks may differ. Check the documentation’s current values before funding an account.

Review every transaction before signing
Before approving a transaction, inspect the destination, amount, and other displayed transaction details on the trusted wallet or signing device. If the request or destination is unexpected, stop rather than signing to see what happens. Do not enter a recovery secret to authorize a transaction: a wallet should use its documented signing flow, and secret keys must not be exposed to a website or public server.
