To set up an ultrawide for PC gaming, connect it to a compatible output on your graphics card, select its native resolution and highest available refresh rate in Windows, enable variable refresh rate (VRR) in both the monitor and graphics software, then configure HDR and check ultrawide support in each game. The monitor, graphics card, connection, and chosen display mode must all support the feature you want; a monitor’s advertised maximum refresh rate alone does not guarantee it will be available through every input.

1. Connect the monitor to a compatible graphics-card output

When your PC has a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to one of that card’s video outputs rather than the motherboard’s display output. Choose an input and cable supported by both devices for the resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and VRR range you want. Check the monitor manual: its inputs may not all support the same modes.

For GeForce GTX 10-series and later, NVIDIA documents VESA Adaptive-Sync over DisplayPort 1.2a; HDMI VRR has separate graphics-card and display requirements. A dock or adapter can also affect which modes are available, so verify the actual connection rather than assuming it preserves the monitor’s top refresh rate. NVIDIA’s connection guidance covers the stated GeForce requirements.

2. Choose native resolution and refresh rate in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display and select the ultrawide if more than one display is connected.

  2. Set Display resolution to the monitor’s native resolution. This is the display’s intended pixel grid; examples include 3440 × 1440 for some 21:9 monitors, but use the value specified for your model.

  3. Open Advanced display and select the highest refresh rate Windows offers for that display and current connection.

Windows relies on capabilities reported by the connected display hardware, so the list of available modes depends on the monitor, graphics hardware, connection, and firmware. If the expected resolution or refresh rate is missing, check the input and cable, any adapter or dock, and the monitor’s manual before concluding the display cannot support it. Microsoft’s display guidance describes how Windows handles display capabilities.

3. Enable variable refresh rate

VRR lets a compatible display adjust its refresh rate to match changing game frame rates, reducing screen tearing when the feature is working as intended. Turn on the monitor’s own setting first. It may be labelled FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or use the manufacturer’s terminology. Then configure the corresponding graphics software for your GPU.

AMD FreeSync

  1. Install or open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.

  2. Enable FreeSync in the monitor’s on-screen menu.

  3. In AMD Software, open Gaming > Display and check or enable FreeSync for the display.

AMD’s published setup instructions use Adrenalin Edition 23.9.1, and the options can vary by system. See AMD’s FreeSync setup instructions for the documented sequence.

NVIDIA G-SYNC

  1. Connect a supported display and turn on its variable-refresh setting in the monitor menu.

    • Game longer: Lock in for marathon gaming sessions with a dedicated console mode and hardware-based low blue light solution that reduces eye strain while preserving color.
  3. Enable G-SYNC and apply the setting.

NVIDIA’s cited guidance specifies Windows 10 or later and a Pascal-class or later GeForce GPU for G-SYNC Compatible displays. An Adaptive-Sync monitor not listed by NVIDIA may work fully, work partly, or fail to work; check compatibility for the exact monitor and GPU. See NVIDIA’s G-SYNC instructions.

Windows also has an operating-system VRR setting for supported hardware. It supplements rather than replaces the monitor and driver setup for G-SYNC, FreeSync, or Adaptive-Sync. Microsoft’s 2019 explanation described this OS feature for Windows 10 version 1903 and later; it should not be treated as a substitute for enabling VRR in the relevant graphics software. Microsoft DirectX Developer Blog explains the distinction.

4. Enable HDR only when the full setup supports it

Windows refers to HDR display support as Advanced Color. The monitor, selected input and mode, graphics hardware, and game all need to support the HDR experience you want. Check the monitor manual for input-specific HDR support, enable HDR in Windows when available, and turn on HDR in the game’s display settings if the game offers it.

Microsoft’s display hardware guidance calls for VESA DisplayHDR 1.1 certification for HDR displays; it recommends DisplayHDR 600 or better for LCD, and DisplayHDR 500 True Black or better for OLED or micro-LED. These are Windows guidance thresholds, not a guarantee that every input or game supports the same HDR mode. Microsoft’s display guidance provides the stated criteria.

5. Set and verify the ultrawide mode in each game

Open the game’s display or graphics settings and select the monitor’s native ultrawide resolution and aspect ratio if the options are available. Then check the image itself: confirm that gameplay is framed correctly and that menus and other interface elements display as expected. Some games may expose a field-of-view control or separate options for resolution and aspect ratio.

Compatibility is title-specific. The cited platform guidance does not establish that every PC game supports 21:9 or 32:9, or that a game treats gameplay, cutscenes, menus, and interface elements identically. Check the game’s current settings and support information rather than assuming the monitor’s aspect ratio will be used throughout.

What to compare if you are still choosing a monitor

Check the exact model’s native resolution and aspect ratio, its maximum refresh rate for each input, VRR support and range, GPU compatibility, and HDR capability. For instance, AMD lists the Alienware AW3423DWF as a 34-inch, 21:9 OLED display with a 3440 × 1440 resolution, a 165 Hz refresh rate, and FreeSync Premium Pro. That is one product example, not a specification shared by all ultrawide monitors. AMD’s FreeSync page also describes FreeSync, Premium, and Premium Pro tiers. AMD says all tiers include tear-free experience, low latency, and low-framerate compensation, while Premium Pro adds AMD FreeSync HDR. Check the exact product certification: tier criteria include resolution-specific refresh-rate thresholds, so resolution alone does not establish a tier.
