To set up an OLED gaming monitor, connect it to your graphics card with a cable and port that support the mode you want, select the correct monitor input, then set its native resolution and highest available refresh rate in Windows. Enable adaptive sync and HDR only if your monitor, graphics hardware, connection, and game support them. Keep the monitor’s own OLED care features enabled and follow its manual for maintenance.
1. Check your monitor’s manual and connections
Before connecting anything, check the exact monitor model’s manual and specifications. OLED monitors differ in their ports, supported resolutions and refresh rates, HDR behavior, and panel-care features. The manual should identify the monitor inputs and the supported modes for each one. For example, LG’s support page for the 27GX704A-B provides its owner’s manual and quick guide.
Connect the monitor to an output on your graphics card rather than an unrelated motherboard video output when your PC has a dedicated graphics card. Use the cable included with the monitor if available. Otherwise, check the GPU’s output, the monitor’s input, and the connection requirements for the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use. Neither HDMI nor DisplayPort is automatically the better choice for every monitor.
The differences are model-specific: MSI lists HDMI 2.1 among the connections on the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24, while its MPG 272URX QD-OLED page describes DisplayPort 2.1a with up to 80Gbps bandwidth and support for 4K at 240Hz without DSC on that model. These specifications are examples, not general advice about what every OLED monitor or cable can do.

- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey OLED G6 Gaming Monitor is engineered for perfection with a QD-OLED Display featuring QHD resolution made to deliver high brightness and a wide range of colors for gameplay
- OLED Safeguard technology supports performance by actively helping to prevent burn-in with a thermal modulation system
- Glare Free Technology keeps screen clear of reflection from external light sources
- The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes
2. Select the monitor input
Turn on the monitor and PC. If the monitor does not display the PC automatically, open its on-screen display (OSD), choose the input connected to the computer, and confirm. Input names and menu paths vary by model, so use the manual if you cannot find the source selector.
3. Set the native resolution and refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display.
- Select the OLED monitor if more than one display is connected.
- Choose the monitor’s native resolution in Display settings, then return to Advanced display.
- Choose the highest refresh rate Windows offers for that monitor and configuration.
Microsoft documents this control in its guide to changing the refresh rate in Windows. The available options depend on the monitor, cable and ports, GPU, and system configuration; the monitor maker’s specifications state its rated modes. For instance, MSI lists the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24 as a 26.5-inch QD-OLED display with 3840 × 2160 resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. Those are specifications for that model, not a description of all OLED monitors.

- ADAPTIVE-SYNC TECHNOLOGY: Eliminate screen tearing and stuttering with Adaptive-Sync compatibility, ensuring a seamless and fluid gaming experience.
4. Enable adaptive sync when both ends support it
Adaptive sync may be identified as G-SYNC Compatible, FreeSync, or Adaptive-Sync. Check the monitor manual and the current instructions for your GPU software to confirm which mode is supported and how to enable it. Support can depend on the monitor, GPU, connection, and software configuration. MSI, for example, lists both G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support for the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24; that claim applies to this model, not to OLED monitors generally.

HDR behavior and controls depend on the monitor, connection, and game. Confirm that the specific monitor and connection support the HDR mode you intend to use, then follow the monitor’s manual and the current Windows and game controls. Do not assume that one brightness level, picture mode, or calibration value is right for every OLED display. MSI lists DisplayHDR True Black 400 for the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24, but that is a model-specific specification, not a universal OLED setting.

6. Keep OLED care features enabled
Use the protection options and maintenance routine specified in your monitor’s manual. Features differ by model. MSI describes pixel shift, pixel refresh, static-image brightness reduction, boundary detection, and taskbar or logo detection for the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24. MSI says its OLED Care 2.0 functions are designed to prevent static images or elements from remaining on screen and to adjust peak brightness when it is not necessary; this is the manufacturer’s description, not a guarantee that panel wear or burn-in is impossible.

Start with the picture mode intended for gaming or HDR, as appropriate, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for further adjustments. The right image settings are model- and preference-dependent, so there is no single preset that can be recommended for every OLED monitor. LG lists LG Calibration Studio software on its 27GX704A-B support page; calibration software or a colorimeter is not a requirement for ordinary setup.

If the expected refresh rate or image mode is missing
- Check the selected display. In Advanced display, make sure Windows is showing the OLED monitor whose settings you want to change.
- Check the connection path. Verify that the cable connects the GPU output to a monitor input that supports the intended mode, and consult both devices’ specifications.
- Recheck the monitor input and manual. Select the connected source in the OSD and confirm which resolution, refresh rate, adaptive-sync, and HDR modes that input supports.
- Check GPU software instructions. Adaptive-sync controls and support depend on the GPU and monitor combination; use the GPU maker’s current instructions rather than assuming one menu path applies to every system.
