For the best coverage and speed, first confirm your devices can use the router’s 6 GHz band, then position the router in the open near the areas where you use Wi-Fi. Set a secure network, keep channel selection automatic unless testing shows a reason to change it, and add mesh nodes or wired backhaul only when your home has a coverage gap. Finally, measure results in the same places with the same devices. A Wi-Fi 7 router cannot make an incompatible device use 6 GHz or guarantee faster internet service.
1. Check your devices and identify the bottleneck
Before changing router settings, check the exact model of the phone, computer, or other device you want to improve. Using 6 GHz requires support in both the router or access point and the client. A Wi-Fi 7 router does not add 6 GHz capability to an older device. NETGEAR’s 6 GHz troubleshooting guidance says the band is for compatible Wi-Fi 6E and newer devices.
Also check whether the slow connection is actually caused by Wi-Fi. A distant device may have a weak signal, but your internet plan, modem or ONT, or the speed of a wired WAN or LAN port can also limit throughput. If possible, compare the problem device with a wired connection or a nearby Wi-Fi test before adjusting wireless settings.
2. Choose a practical router location
Place the main router in an open, elevated spot such as a shelf or stand, near the areas that need service. Favor a central position with fewer walls between the router and the devices. Avoid hiding it in a closet, basement, or attic when strong nearby 6 GHz service is the goal.

The modem or ONT connection can constrain where the router goes. If the current location is poor, a suitable longer Ethernet cable may let you move the router to a better position. Google’s placement guidance notes that the best position depends on home size, construction, layout, and where people use Wi-Fi; there is no universal placement formula. See Where to place your Wifi devices.
Keep 6 GHz range in mind when choosing the location: NETGEAR notes that it has a shorter range than 5 GHz. Treat 6 GHz as a high-throughput option for compatible devices relatively close to the router, rather than expecting it to cover every distant room.

3. Set security and network names
Use WPA3 for the 6 GHz network. NETGEAR recommends the same network name and password across bands, with WPA3-PSK on 6 GHz and WPA2/WPA3-PSK on 2.4 and 5 GHz. A shared name is convenient for ordinary use because the router and client can select a band; a separate 6 GHz name can help when you want to test or deliberately select that band. Router interfaces and available options vary, so treat these as examples rather than universal menu labels.

4. Leave channel selection automatic unless you have a reason to adjust it
Start with automatic channel selection. If you later test a manual setting, change one option at a time and compare results in the same location. Channel availability and legal power rules depend on your country, router, firmware, and client, so there is no channel number that is right for every home.
Wi-Fi 7 implementations may support channel widths up to 320 MHz on 6 GHz, but a wider channel is not a guarantee of a faster or more reliable connection. The router, client, firmware, channel availability, and signal conditions all matter. TP-Link’s 2024 product guide lists 320 MHz on 6 GHz and 160 MHz on 5 GHz for one product family; those are product specifications, not household speed-test results. The TP-Link Omada channel guide also illustrates how channel-width options and counts depend on the specific channel context.

5. Add mesh coverage or wired backhaul only where it helps
If the main router serves most of the home but a particular room remains weak, a mesh node can extend coverage. Place it between the main router and the weak area, where it still receives a sound connection from the main unit. A node placed in the dead zone may have a weak connection of its own, so test its position rather than assuming any location will fix the gap.

Ethernet backhaul addresses the connection between mesh nodes: when the hardware and home wiring support it, nodes can communicate over Ethernet instead of relying on a wireless link. TP-Link describes Ethernet backhaul as a way to support stable coverage, but it is not a quantified guarantee for every setup. Before choosing a single router or mesh system, compare:

6. Treat Wi-Fi 7 MLO as a model-specific feature
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) can use multiple links in supported combinations, but both the router and client—and their firmware—must support the relevant mode. Availability and mesh-backhaul behavior differ by model. ASUS notes that MLO support varies by model and firmware and describes chipset limitations for MLO backhaul in some AiMesh arrangements. Check the ASUS MLO support guidance for your exact router and mesh nodes before enabling the feature or expecting a particular backhaul benefit.
7. Test changes where you actually use Wi-Fi
Measure before and after changes using the same device, in the same locations. Test both near the router and in the room that prompted the setup change. Record which band the client uses and its negotiated link rate if available; also check whether a wired connection reaches the speed you expect from your internet service.
- Record a baseline near the router and in the problem room.
- Change one thing, such as router position, node placement, or a channel setting.
- Repeat the tests with the same device and note the band and results.
- Keep the change only if it improves the location and use case that matter to you.
Do not treat a router’s advertised maximum link rate as a measured internet speed. A Wi-Fi link and an internet connection have different limits, and no single speed-test result establishes what another home will get.
