To use a touchscreen display as a Windows monitoring surface, connect and identify it, choose Extend for a separate workspace, confirm that Windows recognizes touch, and pin the apps you want to open quickly. The exact monitoring app and monitor model determine the dashboard layout and any device-specific touch setup.
1. Connect the display and identify it in Windows
- Connect the monitor to the PC or dock, including any connection the monitor maker requires for touch input.
- Open Settings > System > Display. Select Identify to show each screen’s number, then match the numbers to the physical displays. If the new screen is not listed, select Detect. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor setup instructions.
- Drag the numbered display tiles to reflect where the monitors sit on your desk. Move the pointer between screens to check that the on-screen arrangement matches their physical positions.
- Select the touchscreen and set its orientation and scale for the way it is mounted. If you want portrait orientation, rotate the monitor physically as well as changing the Windows setting.
2. Choose how the displays should work together
For a dedicated dashboard beside your regular desktop, choose Extend. Change projection mode with Win+P, or use the available display mode controls in Windows.
| Mode | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Extend | Creates a separate workspace across the displays. | You want the monitoring app on one screen and other work on another. |
| Duplicate | Shows the same image on both displays. | You need the same content visible on each screen, not independent app placement. |
| Second screen only | Shows the desktop on the external display only. | You want the touchscreen to be the active display rather than the PC’s built-in screen. |
Microsoft documents these modes and display arrangement in its guide to using multiple monitors. Choose the mode that fits your setup; mirroring does not create a separate dashboard workspace.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Check that touch works on the intended screen
Touch needs both a touch-capable display and a touch device that Windows recognizes. An HDMI or DisplayPort connection carries video, but by itself does not establish that touch input is connected. Follow the monitor maker’s instructions for its touch-data connection and Windows compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-Touch Display: 21.5" Full HD with 10-point multi-touch capacity, suitable for any application that involves virtual keyboard or multi-touch functionality for business use
- Wide Viewing Angles: Stunningly wide 178 viewing angles and vivid, colorful displays with IPS panel technology
- Frameless Design: Frameless design makes it suitable for almost-seamless multi-display setups
- Eye Care Technology: ASUS Eye Care technology with flicker-free backlighting and blue light filter to minimize eye fatigue during extended use
- Flexible Connectivity Options: Flexible connectivity with HDMI and VGA ports for versatile device compatibility
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and look for HID-compliant touch screen.
- If the device is disabled, enable it. If more than one touchscreen is listed, check each relevant device. Microsoft provides the steps in Enable and disable a touchscreen in Windows.
If taps register on the wrong display, check that the Windows display arrangement matches the physical layout and consult the monitor maker’s mapping instructions. Microsoft also documents a Tablet PC Settings override for digitizer mapping; with several displays, mismatched device identifiers can complicate touch targeting. The exact mapping flow depends on the hardware, so there is no single universal calibration sequence.
4. Put the monitoring app and shortcuts where they are easy to reach
Choose a monitoring application that reports the metrics you actually need; Windows Widgets are not a general-purpose hardware-metrics dashboard. Widgets can provide glanceable information, but their purpose and available content are described separately in Microsoft’s Widgets guide.

- Full HD Frameless Display: 23.8-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) frameless IPS panel with wide viewing angles
- Multi-Touch Capability: 10-point multi-touch capacity delivers a smooth and intuitive touch experience
- Extensive Connectivity Options: Extensive connectivity with USB-C with power delivery, HDMI, DisplayPort in and out for daisy-chain, Earphone jack and USB hub for the most flexibility
- Ergonomic Design: Ergonomic design with +35 -5 tilt, 180 swivel, 90 pivot and 130mm height adjustments for a comfortable viewing experience
- USB-C Power Delivery: USB-C port allows simple laptop docking for data transmission and video signal to the display, as well as up to 80W power delivery to the laptop via just one cable
- Find the monitoring app in Windows Search and open it. Arrange its window on the touchscreen workspace if you selected Extend.
- Pin frequently used apps to the taskbar: search for the app, then use its taskbar option to pin it. Drag pinned icons to put the most-used shortcuts in a convenient order. See Microsoft’s taskbar customization instructions.
- If you use more than one monitor, configure Windows to show the taskbar on the displays where you want access to those shortcuts. The taskbar is a quick-launch aid; pinning apps does not restrict access to the rest of the system.
- Use a dedicated desktop or a full-screen view if that suits your workflow, after checking that the monitoring app supports the behavior you want. Do not assume every app has touch-friendly controls or a persistent dashboard mode.
5. Use touch gestures that fit the app
Windows supports tap to select, a two-finger slide to scroll, pinch or stretch to zoom, and press-and-hold for additional commands. In Windows 11, gesture settings are under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch; three- and four-finger gestures can also be enabled there. Microsoft lists the supported interactions in Touch gestures for Windows. Gestures may conflict with controls inside some apps, so test the ones you plan to use in the monitoring app itself.
6. Use kiosk configuration only for a restricted shared display
For a personal monitoring setup, ordinary app windows and pinned taskbar shortcuts are the straightforward option. Kiosk configuration is intended for shared, fixed-purpose devices where access should be restricted:

- Assigned Access configures a single-app experience or a restricted set of apps.
- Shell Launcher can replace the usual Windows shell, Explorer.exe, with a desktop app.
These options change the normal desktop experience and require consideration of app compatibility and device administration. They are not prerequisites for using a touchscreen as a personal dashboard. Microsoft explains the distinctions in its Windows kiosk configuration overview.
