The best starting point for a TCL Mini-LED TV is not a universal list of numbers. Identify your exact model, software, room, content source and viewing preference, then begin with Movie or FILMMAKER MODE and make small, reversible changes while watching familiar material. TCL’s menus and available controls vary by model, input, content type and picture mode; the instructions below use current TCL Google TV models such as the QM8K, QM7K and QM6K as references.
Before changing anything, identify the TV and source
Write down the complete model number from the label on the television, its original box or Settings > System > About (the exact path can vary). A name such as “QM8” is not enough: a QM8K and an earlier QM8 generation can expose different controls. Also note the software version and whether you are watching through a built-in streaming app, an antenna, a game console, a disc player or another HDMI device.
TCL documents picture adjustments as dependent on the TV model, firmware, input source, content and selected picture mode. A setting that appears while an HDMI device is active may be absent when a built-in app is open, and a broadcast picture menu can differ from an HDMI menu. Use the guide for your specific model whenever a label or menu path does not match.
Open the picture controls
On the QM8K Google TV, the documented route is Settings > All settings > Display & Sound. Open that area while the source you want to adjust is playing, then enter the picture controls. Other TCL models may put the same options under a shorter Settings menu or use different wording.

Make one change at a time and leave a familiar scene on screen. A dark film scene, a daylight sports shot, a news program with faces and a high-quality HDR clip reveal different problems. Avoid judging the picture from a single colorful demonstration video.
Choose a sensible picture mode
Picture mode is the group of defaults that controls brightness, color, contrast and processing together. Start with the mode designed for your content, then adjust individual controls only if the result is unsuitable for your room.
| Mode or approach | When to try it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| FILMMAKER MODE | Films and series when the option is available | Usually minimizes presentation changes that can make film motion and lighting look artificial; room brightness may make the image appear subdued. |
| Movie | General film and television viewing | A balanced, movie-oriented baseline. It is a starting point, not a guaranteed reference setting on every model. |
| Sports | Live sports or other fast action | May apply more motion processing and a brighter presentation; check whether movement looks overly smooth. |
| Brighter or Standard modes | Very bright rooms or when you simply need more visible output | They can raise apparent brightness but may change the intended contrast, color and energy behavior. |
TCL describes FILMMAKER MODE in the QM8K guide as: “Restore the real film scene and feel the filmmaker’s expression of the image.” That description explains its purpose, not a promise that it will look best in every room. Compare it with Movie after your eyes have adapted for a few minutes.
Use the room as the test condition
Watch in the lighting you normally use. A mode that looks appropriately restrained at night may seem too dim beside a sunlit window. Conversely, increasing brightness to compete with daylight can make a night-time picture look harsh. If your household uses different lighting, save a preferred mode for the conditions in which you watch most often rather than chasing a single “correct” appearance.
Set brightness, contrast and HDR controls separately
TCL exposes several controls that are often confused with one another. They affect different parts of the image, so change the control that matches the problem instead of raising every slider.

| Control | What it changes | Practical adjustment method |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Overall screen luminance | Raise it only enough for shadow detail to remain visible in your room; lower it if the whole image is glaring. |
| Contrast | White level and the separation of bright tones | Use a scene with clouds, white clothing or subtitles. Excessive contrast can merge bright details. |
| Black Level | How dark the black portion of the signal is presented | Check a letterbox bar or a dark scene. An incorrect level can make blacks gray or crush near-black detail. |
| Gamma | Mid-range brightness between black and white | Adjust for room lighting: too low can flatten a dark-room image; too high can hide shadow information. |
| Dynamic Tone Mapping | How HDR brightness and detail are balanced across a scene | Compare bright highlights and shadow detail in the same HDR scene. More aggressive mapping can make highlights appear brighter while changing the creator’s intended balance. |
| Local Contrast | Backlight and signal contrast by area | Increase only while checking subtitles, stars and objects beside dark backgrounds. Stronger settings can improve perceived contrast but may reveal blooming or small brightness shifts. |
| Peak Luminance | Maximum brightness available in local-dimming areas | Use HDR highlights and a bright-room test. Higher output is not automatically more accurate and can make a dark-room picture tiring. |
The official TCL documentation defines these controls but does not establish one numeric value that applies to every Mini-LED panel, firmware version or source. Begin with the selected mode’s defaults, make small changes, and return to the mode defaults if you lose track of what you changed.
Why Mini-LED dimming can look different scene to scene
Mini-LED backlighting divides the screen into local-dimming areas. The television continually decides how bright each area should be, so a dark scene with a small bright object can look different from a full-screen daylight scene. Subtitles, menus and white logos can also cause the backlight to react. This is normal behavior for area-based dimming; adjust Local Contrast and Peak Luminance only after deciding whether the change is actually improving your usual content.

Fix a TCL TV that looks too dim
On 2025 TCL models including the QM6K, QM7K and QM8K, TCL says Standard mode is designed to save energy and may look dimmer. Changing picture mode is therefore a legitimate troubleshooting step when the image is difficult to see. It is a brightness preference adjustment, not evidence that a brighter mode is more accurate.
- Open the picture menu while the dim source is playing.
- Switch from Standard to Movie, FILMMAKER MODE or another available mode.
- Wait through a dark and a bright scene before judging the result.
- If the picture is still too dark, adjust Brightness, Peak Luminance or HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping modestly, one at a time.
- Check that the source itself is not outputting a different HDR or range format than your other devices.
If only one app or HDMI device is dim, do not change every input first. Apply the adjustment to that source, then compare it with a built-in app. A room with strong daylight may also require a brighter mode during the day and a movie-oriented mode at night.
Keep color and clarity processing under control
After choosing a mode, evaluate color before adding enhancement. TCL menus can include Color Saturation, Tint, Color Temperature, Sharpness, Noise Reduction, Gradation Clear and related processing options. Their names and availability vary.

Color Saturation and Tint
Color Saturation changes the intensity of colors; Tint shifts the balance between green and magenta. Faces, grass and a familiar animated program are useful checks. If skin tones look sunburned or neon, reduce saturation rather than changing several controls together. Tint should normally require little adjustment unless a source has a clear color cast.
Color Temperature
Color temperature changes the overall white balance impression, from warmer (more reddish or yellow) to cooler (more bluish). Movie-oriented modes often look warmer than store displays. Let your eyes adapt before deciding that a warm image is wrong, and do not treat a menu label such as “Cool” or “Warm” as an instrument measurement.
Sharpness
Sharpness adds edge processing; it does not create missing detail. Excessive sharpness produces bright outlines around text, faces and high-contrast objects. Use a high-quality 4K source, inspect fine text or hair, and reduce the control if you see halos. Low-resolution broadcast video may need a different compromise from native 4K content.
Noise Reduction and Gradation Clear
Noise Reduction can hide compression noise in a poor stream but can also smear fine texture. Gradation Clear and similar controls attempt to reduce visible steps in smooth color transitions. Compare a clean, high-quality source with a heavily compressed one; leave processing low or off when it removes detail, and use it selectively for noisy material.
TCL does not publish a universal set of color, sharpness or processing numbers for all Mini-LED televisions. Reset the current picture mode if your changes become difficult to identify, then repeat the evaluation with one control at a time.

Set motion processing for the content you watch
TCL may label motion controls as Motion, Motion Smoothing, Judder Reduction, Motion Clarity or Clear LED Motion, depending on the model. These options can include separate adjustments for film-like judder, blur reduction and backlight strobing.
For films and scripted television
Start with Movie or Cinema and compare a slow camera pan, a dialogue shot and a scene with fine repeating detail. If actors look as though they are moving unnaturally smoothly, reduce Judder Reduction or the general smoothing setting. TCL notes that movie-oriented modes are intended to keep motion closer to the director’s presentation than more aggressive sports processing.
For sports and live action
Sports mode may add stronger smoothing to make a ball or player easier to follow. Test it on an actual broadcast rather than a movie clip. If players leave trails, faces warp or the field shimmers, lower Motion Smoothing or Motion Clarity until the artifacts disappear. Some viewers prefer a little blur reduction even when it changes the film-like look; the right setting is the one you can watch comfortably.
How to turn motion smoothing down
- Play the type of content that bothers you.
- Open the picture settings for that input and mode.
- Find Motion, Motion Smoothing, Judder Reduction, Motion Clarity or Clear LED Motion.
- Lower the smoothing or blur-reduction value, or choose Off if available.
- Replay the same pan or fast-action sequence and check for both stutter and artificial smoothness.
Motion settings are often stored per picture mode and per input. Turning smoothing off for an HDMI player may not change the setting used by a built-in streaming app.

| Situation | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Only one HDMI device looks wrong | Leave the other inputs unchanged and adjust the active HDMI input. |
| You want a consistent baseline everywhere | Use the “apply to all inputs” option if your model offers it, then verify each source. |
| Built-in apps and HDMI look different | Open the picture menu separately in an app and on the HDMI device; do not assume one set of values transferred. |
| SD, HD and HDR broadcasts behave differently | Check each content type or picture mode and save only the changes that improve that material. |
After saving, switch among your main sources and confirm that the selected mode and key controls remain as intended. A firmware update, a new source format or a newly selected picture mode can expose a separate set of values.
A repeatable setup procedure
- Record the model. Note the complete model number, year if known, software version and screen size.
- Prepare the room. Turn on the lights you normally use and disable temporary store-demo conditions or vivid showroom content.
- Choose a source. Start with a high-quality film or series for general setup, then verify with sports, news and HDR material.
- Select a baseline mode. Try FILMMAKER MODE or Movie for films. Use Sports only when its motion treatment suits your broadcasts.
- Set overall visibility. Adjust Brightness for the room, then check Black Level and Gamma with dark scenes.
- Evaluate HDR. Compare Dynamic Tone Mapping, Local Contrast and Peak Luminance using the same HDR sequence. Change one control and look for lost highlight or shadow detail.
- Refine color. Check faces and neutral whites before touching Saturation, Tint or Color Temperature.
- Refine clarity. Reduce Sharpness if you see halos; add Noise Reduction only when source noise is distracting.
- Choose motion. Lower smoothing for a film-like presentation or raise it carefully for fast action, checking for soap-opera motion and artifacts.
- Save by input. Apply to the current input or all inputs as appropriate, then verify your apps, antenna and HDMI devices separately.
- Document your choices. Photograph the final menu pages or write down the mode and unusual changes so you can restore them after a reset or update.
Troubleshooting common picture problems
The picture is dark only in HDR
- Confirm that the source is actually sending HDR and that the TV has switched to its HDR picture settings.
- Compare Dynamic Tone Mapping and Peak Luminance in the HDR mode rather than changing SDR Brightness.
- Check the room lighting and compare a bright highlight with shadow detail; a brighter image is not automatically preserving more information.
Black bars or shadows look gray
- Check Black Level and the source device’s output range for a mismatch.
- Inspect a dark scene with local dimming enabled and compare Local Contrast settings.
- Do not compensate by crushing Brightness until near-black detail disappears.
Bright objects have halos or blooming
- Use a subtitle or star-field scene to reproduce the effect.
- Reduce Local Contrast or Peak Luminance slightly and compare the same scene.
- Remember that local dimming works in areas, so some light around a small bright object can remain even when the TV is operating normally.
Motion looks like a soap opera
- Open the model’s Motion, Motion Smoothing or Judder Reduction controls.
- Lower the smoothing value or turn it off for Movie/Cinema mode.
- Replay the same camera pan; do not judge the change from a different scene.
Colors look exaggerated or faces are unnatural
- Return to Movie or FILMMAKER MODE and compare with your previous mode.
- Lower Color Saturation before changing Tint.
- Allow time for your eyes to adapt to a warmer Color Temperature before selecting a cooler preset.
Settings keep changing or do not appear on another device
- Check that you are editing the intended input and picture mode.
- Look for an option to apply settings to all inputs if that is what you want.
- Review the model guide after a software update because menu names and available controls can change.
What the model-specific specifications do—and do not—tell you
TCL’s product information for the QM8 context advertises up to 2,300 local-dimming zones. That figure applies to the product context on that page and should not be generalized to every TCL Mini-LED generation or treated as an independent measurement. Zone count alone does not determine how the television will look in your room; processing, panel behavior, source quality and your selected controls also matter.
There are no independent calibration measurements or universal reference values established for this setup guide. If you need professionally accurate grayscale, color or HDR tracking, a model-specific measurement workflow is required. The steps here are designed to produce a controlled, repeatable setup without pretending that one numerical recipe fits every panel.
