For clearer dialogue and more convincing surround sound, center the soundbar beneath the TV, keep its drivers unobstructed, and verify that the TV, source, soundbar, and content are using a compatible audio path. Then adjust dialogue processing and room placement to suit your listening space. Exact settings vary by model, so check your TV and soundbar manuals before changing device-specific options.
1. Position the soundbar for the main listening seat
Center the bar with the television and aim it toward the seat where you usually watch. Keeping the bar aligned with the screen helps dialogue seem to come from the people speaking rather than from beside or below the picture. Bose recommends this alignment in its soundbar placement guidance.
Leave the front of the bar clear. A cabinet edge, decorative panel, or other obstruction can block its drivers and interfere with the sound reaching you. If the bar sits inside a cabinet, make sure the opening does not cover the front or sides of the unit; follow the manufacturer’s placement requirements.
2. Match placement to the soundbar’s surround design
Soundbars with upward-firing Dolby Atmos drivers
Upward-firing Atmos drivers need an unobstructed path to the ceiling so sound can reflect toward the listening area. Dolby recommends mounting an Atmos-enabled soundbar “at, or slightly above, a seated listener’s ear level” for overhead effects. Avoid placing it under a shelf, cabinet, or soffit that blocks the upward path. A flat, reflective ceiling is more suitable for this approach than an obstructed or heavily sound-absorbing one. See Dolby’s Atmos speaker setup guide.

Virtual Atmos and other virtual-surround bars
Virtual surround processing does not rely on the same upward-firing reflection path. Dolby’s guidance for virtual Atmos soundbars is to place the bar below the TV around ear level, face it toward the listening position, and keep the path between the bar and listener clear. Check your specific model’s manual: virtual processing and physical driver layouts differ between products.
3. Check the TV-to-soundbar connection
When both devices support it, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port to the corresponding port on the soundbar. ARC and eARC are audio connection methods, not guarantees that a particular surround format will work: both devices, the source route, settings, and program audio must support the format.

For Samsung TVs, Samsung’s eARC support instructions say to enable HDMI-CEC and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto. Its menu labels are Samsung-specific examples, not universal names. Samsung also recommends setting Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through for Atmos in its Dolby Atmos setup instructions. On other brands, use the manual to find equivalent options, if available.
eARC requires compatible ports and a suitable cable. If the existing connection does not work, confirm the TV and soundbar manuals’ cable requirements and that the cable is connected to the labeled ARC/eARC ports before buying another one. Samsung’s support page explains its eARC compatibility requirements here.

4. Confirm that the source is sending the format you expect
To receive Dolby Atmos, the soundbar, TV or direct source path, and the content all need compatible support. A working HDMI ARC/eARC connection alone does not establish that Atmos is being delivered. Check the format shown on the soundbar, or consult its manual for how to confirm the incoming audio signal.
For an external streaming box, game console, or disc player, Dolby advises selecting bitstream output and disabling secondary-audio mixing where that option is available. Samsung’s Atmos instructions likewise describe bitstream settings for supported sources. Menu names vary, and some sources or programs may not offer Atmos at all; verify the content and device capabilities rather than assuming every show or input uses the format.

5. Improve dialogue and reduce room reflections
Try dialogue or voice enhancement judiciously
If the soundbar offers a dialogue or voice-enhancement control, compare it with the feature on and off using a familiar program at your usual listening level. These controls vary by model and may change the overall tonal balance, so there is no single setting that suits every program or listener.
Address reflective surfaces
Large, hard, parallel surfaces can reflect sound and blur detail. If dialogue remains difficult to follow, try simple changes such as adding a rug, upholstered furniture, or bookshelves to break up reflections; Bose describes these options in its room and soundbar placement guidance. These adjustments can help the room feel less acoustically harsh, but they do not replace correcting blocked drivers or a poor connection.

- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Run room calibration after placement
If your soundbar includes room calibration, run it after positioning the bar and any other system components. The microphone-based process, setup requirements, and available adjustments vary by model; follow the manual and repeat calibration if you substantially move the equipment.

Find a controlled subwoofer position
If your system includes a subwoofer, try more than one location and listen for bass that is even and controlled from the main seat. Bose describes a “subwoofer crawl”: temporarily put the subwoofer at the listening seat, play familiar bass-heavy audio, then listen around the room perimeter for a position that sounds good. Place the subwoofer at that location and check the result from your seat.
Position rear speakers for your specific system
For Bose’s 5.1 placement guidance, rear surrounds go slightly behind and to the side of the listening position. Other systems can use different speaker designs and placement requirements, so follow the instructions for your soundbar and surround kit rather than applying that recommendation universally. Adding a subwoofer or rear speakers can expand a system, but only when the components are compatible and placed as their manuals specify.
Quick troubleshooting checks
- Dialogue sounds detached from the picture: Re-center the bar with the TV, aim it toward the main seat, and clear anything in front of its drivers.
- Overhead effects are weak: If the bar has upward-firing drivers, check for a clear path to the ceiling and remove any shelf or cabinet obstruction.
- The soundbar does not show Atmos: Verify support on the soundbar, TV or source route, and content; check HDMI ARC/eARC connections and the relevant output settings.
- Dialogue remains hard to follow: Compare the model’s voice-enhancement setting, address obvious room reflections, and run calibration after the system is positioned.
- Bass is uneven: Try another subwoofer position and assess it from the usual listening seat.
