For better sound from a smart speaker, start with a stable, unobstructed spot, follow the clearance and orientation guidance for your exact model, then finish setup in its companion app and listen from your usual seat. There is no single placement distance that applies to every speaker and room.
1. Check your speaker’s placement requirements
Identify the exact model before choosing a location. Manufacturers give different placement instructions, so do not apply one product’s distances or orientation rules to another.
- Apple HomePod and HomePod mini: Apple says to place either speaker on a solid surface with at least 15 cm of space around it. See Apple’s HomePod setup instructions.
- Amazon Echo Studio: Amazon recommends a location at your preferred listening height, at least 15 cm from the wall, with clearance at the top and sides. See Amazon’s Echo Studio setup guidance.
In either case, use a stable, level surface and keep the speaker’s openings clear. Avoid a spot where the device could be knocked over or fall. Listening height is an explicit Echo Studio recommendation, not a fixed height for all smart speakers.
2. Complete setup in the speaker’s app
Plug in the speaker and follow the setup flow for its platform. Use the home Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to use, and complete any room naming or sound settings offered during setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- HomePod: Apple’s setup flow uses an iPhone or iPad. Follow Apple’s instructions for setting up HomePod.
- Google speakers on Android: Google’s instructions call for the Google Home app, a Google Account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and an internet connection. Check the applicable requirements and steps in Google’s Android setup guide.
- Echo Studio: Use the Alexa app and follow Amazon’s Echo Studio setup guidance.
App labels and available options can vary by model and platform. Use the instructions for your actual device rather than assuming one brand’s setup steps apply to another.
3. Listen from your usual spot and adjust
Once setup is complete, play familiar audio from the place where you normally listen. If the sound is not working well for that room, make small changes to the speaker’s position while staying within the model’s placement guidance. This is a practical way to find a position that suits your room; the manufacturer distances below are instructions for particular products, not proof of a measured improvement in every space.

4. Add a second speaker only if you want stereo
A stereo pair is optional; one speaker does not need a partner to be set up. Check compatibility in the speaker’s app before pairing. Google says its supported stereo pairs require two speakers of the same model in the same room, with left and right assignment configured during setup. Its general guidance for supported pairs gives about 1.2–2.4 m (4–8 ft) between speakers. See Google’s stereo-pair setup instructions.
That spacing is specific to Google’s supported stereo-pair guidance, not a universal rule. Google gives different placement figures for Home Max: about 3 m (10 ft) between two Home Max speakers and about 2.4–3 m (8–10 ft) to the listening position. See Google’s Home Max placement guidance.

Home Max orientation
Orientation matters for this particular model: Google says Home Max outputs stereo when horizontal and mono when vertical. Do not assume another speaker behaves the same way; check its own guidance.

A subwoofer is not a placement fix or a requirement for a single smart speaker. If you want a bass expansion, first confirm that your speaker ecosystem supports one. Amazon describes Echo Sub as an optional pairing for supported Echo setups and says to place it on the floor in the same room as the Echo speakers or home theater. See Amazon’s Echo Sub setup guidance.
