To use a second monitor as extra workspace, connect it to your computer, press Windows key + P, and select Extend. Then arrange the displays in Windows so the pointer moves naturally between them. An extended desktop can make it easier to keep separate windows visible, though it does not guarantee a productivity boost for everyone.
Connect the monitor and extend your Windows desktop
- Check the video outputs on your computer and the inputs on your monitor. Choose a compatible connection, attach the video cable at both ends, connect the monitor to power, and turn it on.
- Press Windows key + P and select Extend. Microsoft explains: “See your desktop across multiple screens. When you have displays extended, you can move items between the two screens.” Microsoft Support: How to use multiple monitors in Windows.
- Open Settings > System > Display. Select Identify to see the number assigned to each physical screen. Drag the numbered display icons to match how the monitors sit on your desk, then select Apply.
- Move the pointer across the screens to check the arrangement. If it crosses at the wrong edge, return to Display settings and reposition the icons.
- Adjust resolution, scale, orientation, or refresh rate only if the picture does not fit or is difficult to read.
Extend gives you separate screen space. Duplicate shows the same picture on both displays, which is useful for mirroring rather than adding workspace.
Check compatibility before choosing a cable or adapter
The connector’s shape alone does not prove that two devices will work together. Check the computer’s video-output capability and the monitor’s input, along with the resolution and refresh rate you want to use. HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C are among the connection types covered in support guidance from ASUS and Microsoft.

- More than one external display: Confirm the computer or graphics adapter supports the number of independent displays you intend to connect. A dock or USB adapter may add an output on supported systems, but it cannot override the computer’s display limits.
- Splitter: A basic video splitter duplicates one signal; it does not create two independent extended displays.
- Dock or adapter: Confirm compatibility with your specific computer, desired display count, and resolution or refresh rate before purchasing.
Troubleshoot a monitor Windows does not detect
The monitor is connected but missing from Display settings
Go to Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and select Detect. Also verify that the monitor is powered on and the cable is firmly connected at both ends.

The screen is blank or stops working
- Press Windows key + P and confirm that Extend is selected.
- Reconnect the cable and check that the monitor is set to the input you are using.
- Try a different cable or another video output, if available.
- Test the monitor with another computer, if possible, to help identify whether the issue is with the monitor or the original system.
- If the problem persists, restart the computer and follow Microsoft’s external monitor troubleshooting guidance, which also covers graphics-driver troubleshooting.
MacBook Air and Pro with M3: a model-specific note
Apple’s instructions for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with the M3 chip allow two external displays simultaneously when the laptop lid is closed, subject to specific requirements. Apple specifies an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, display power or an adapter, and macOS Sonoma 14.3 or later for MacBook Air or 14.6 or later for MacBook Pro. Opening the lid with both displays connected may cause the secondary external display to go dark or disconnect. These conditions apply to the M3 models covered by Apple’s dual-monitor guide; check Apple’s guidance for other Mac models and chips.

An extra display can let you keep separate material visible—for example, a document on one screen and a reference page on the other. Whether that makes a particular task easier is personal and depends on the work and setup; a universal productivity increase is not established by the evidence cited here.

A 2021 survey of 101 software practitioners found that participants perceived multi-monitor workstations as beneficial and desirable. It also reported that coworker interactions, rather than physical workstation setup, were the most influential factor participants cited as affecting productivity. The survey’s finding that 19% of respondents added a monitor to their home setup in response to COVID-19 describes that sample, not a productivity gain or a general-population rate (Use and Perceptions of Multi-Monitor Workstations: A Natural Experiment). A separate 2021 study describes 86 students in an introductory programming course, but its stated limitations include a small sample and uncontrolled participant composition; it does not establish a specific performance advantage (Monitor++?: Multiple versus Single Laboratory Monitors in Early Programming Education).
