After a factory reset, a Samsung phone returns to its initial setup wizard. Complete that on-device setup, then confirm separately that your Metro by T-Mobile line and SIM or eSIM are active. A reset by itself does not activate service. Screens and menu names vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Before you start
- Charge the phone and have access to reliable Wi-Fi for setup.
- Keep the Google account previously used on the phone handy. You may also need your Samsung account credentials.
- If you reset from Android Recovery, be prepared to verify ownership with the previously used Google account, and possibly the former screen-lock PIN or password.
Complete the Samsung setup wizard
- At the welcome screen, choose your language and any accessibility options you need.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. This is especially important if you will set up an eSIM.
- Follow the displayed prompts to sign in to Google and Samsung accounts, review the terms, and choose whether to restore a backup. Restore only if you want to retrieve data from an available backup.
- Continue through any remaining prompts until the phone reaches its home screen. The exact sequence and labels depend on the model and software release. Samsung’s Galaxy setup guidance describes the general flow, including language, Wi-Fi, accounts, and terms.
Resolve Google account verification after a factory reset
A reset performed through the Recovery menu can trigger Google’s Device Protection. Enter the Google account that was on the phone before the reset; some software versions may also offer or require the previous screen-lock PIN or password. Samsung explains that an unauthorized reset requires the username and password for the last Google account used on the device in its Google Device Protection guidance.
If you recently changed the Google password, Samsung says there may be a 24-hour cooldown before the new password can unlock the reset phone. If you cannot identify the account or complete verification, contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider and be prepared to show proof of purchase. Do not use account-verification bypass methods.

Set up Metro service using eSIM
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile embedded in the phone rather than a removable card. The steps depend on whether the Galaxy was sold by Metro with eSIM provisioning or is a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) phone.

Metro-provisioned Galaxy
Connect to Wi-Fi and watch the initial setup flow for a prompt such as “Preparing for mobile connection.” Metro says a provisioned profile downloads automatically and connects to the T-Mobile network. If no prompt appears, do not assume the line is active; confirm eSIM provisioning with Metro.
Bring-your-own Samsung phone
Metro says BYOD eSIM setup may arrive as an activation notification or require manual setup in Settings. Its published Samsung route is Settings > Network & Internet > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM; select Metro by T-Mobile and follow the prompts. Android and One UI updates can change these labels. If the eSIM profile was erased during troubleshooting or is not offered, check with Metro that the device and line are provisioned before trying setup again.

Set up service with a physical SIM
With the phone powered off, check that the removable Metro SIM is seated correctly in the tray, then turn the phone on. A SIM ejector tool may help open the tray; many phones include one, and eSIM setup does not use it.

To see whether the phone recognizes the card, open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status and check the Network field. Samsung notes that the carrier should appear there when the SIM is recognized; menu wording may differ by model. If this is a new line or a device change, complete Metro’s activation steps as well. Metro requires a compatible, network-unlocked handset and a Metro SIM or eSIM with the appropriate plan; Metro activation support explains its activation process. Finishing Android setup does not activate a line.

- Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily so the tests use the mobile network.
- Place a test call and send a text message.
- Open a webpage or app that needs internet access to check mobile data.
If the phone does not recognize a physical SIM, restart it and, if needed, power it off before reseating the card. Check SIM status again afterward. For persistent connection problems, Samsung documents a mobile network settings reset on supported software at Settings > General management > Reset. Review the on-screen description before confirming: this resets saved mobile configuration and reconnects using defaults, but cannot activate an inactive line or restore an erased, unprovisioned eSIM. If calls, SMS/MMS, signal, mobile data, or hotspot service still fails, Samsung advises contacting the carrier. For a Metro line, ask Metro to check activation and provisioning.
