Keep the handoff simple by deciding three things first: whose accounts will be on the Galaxy, whether anything needs to move from an old phone, and whether the user is a child who needs supervision. Then follow the phone’s setup prompts, check what arrived, and leave the old phone untouched until the owner confirms the important data is there. Samsung and Google note that screens and options can vary by device and software.

Make three decisions before setup

  1. Whose accounts belong on the phone? For an adult, use that family member’s own Google and Samsung accounts rather than leaving the helper’s account as the owner of personal data and services. Google notes that transferred information is associated with the Google Account selected, and that a primary account can be associated with data such as apps and passwords. See Google’s Android switch guide.
  2. Does anything need to move? If the old phone is available, decide whether to transfer data directly or start fresh. If it is unavailable, check whether there is a Google backup and which account was used to make it.
  3. Is this phone for a child? If so, use the child’s supervised Google Account and complete the parent-verification prompts. An adult relative does not need parental controls by default; ask what help they want and leave the phone under their account and control.

Prepare the old and new phones

  • Charge both phones and connect them to Wi-Fi. Keep the old phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password handy; Google recommends these preparations for transfer.
  • Ask the owner what should come across and which Google Account should hold the transferred information.
  • If restoring from a Google backup without the old phone, have the Google Account and password used for that backup ready.
  • Keep the old phone intact until the family member has checked the new one.

Google says its setup steps may vary by device, and transfer menus and available data can differ. For the Galaxy-specific direct transfer path, Samsung’s Canada new Galaxy setup guide describes using Smart Switch during initial setup.

Transfer data to the new Galaxy

If the old Android phone is available

  1. Start the new Galaxy and follow its on-screen setup until it offers to copy data from an old device. Samsung’s Canada guide depicts choosing setup with a Galaxy or Android device.
  2. Pair the phones as prompted. In Samsung’s documented flow, the new phone displays a QR code for the old phone to scan, and the old phone’s screen-lock credential is used to verify access.
  3. Open Smart Switch on the old phone if prompted, grant the requested permissions, then select wireless or wired transfer.
  4. Choose the transfer scope: “Everything,” “Calls, Contacts, and Messages,” or “Custom,” as offered in Samsung’s guide. Choose based on the owner’s preference and what should be on the new phone.
  5. Use a compatible data cable if transferring by wire. Samsung’s depicted wired flow uses the included USB-C charging cable; Google notes that the cable must fit both devices and an adapter may be needed. Wireless transfer is also available, so a new cable is not essential.
  6. Allow the process to finish before moving on. Transfer can take from minutes to hours depending on storage and device conditions, according to Google.

If the old phone is unavailable

Connect the Galaxy to Wi-Fi during setup, sign in with the Google Account used for the backup, and follow the restore prompts. Google’s switch guide describes this backup-based route; the account and password for that backup are needed.

What a transfer may not include

Do not treat migration as a perfect clone. Google’s general Android transfer guidance says the process can copy apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts, messages, call history, and some settings. It also lists items that will not copy through the described setup flow, including downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps outside Google Play, unsupported app data, some data from non-Google accounts, ringtones, and certain settings. App-specific restore behavior can differ, so check important apps individually. See Google’s Android copy guide.

Sign in with the family member’s accounts

Use the family member’s own Google Account and, if they want Samsung services, their own Samsung account. Do not leave the helper’s account as the lasting owner of the phone’s personal data. For an adult who wants help but prefers privacy, let them enter their own password and choose what to sync rather than taking over the account.

A Samsung account is not the same as the Google Account used for Android services and Google backup. Follow the setup prompts for the accounts the owner wants to use; the transfer guidance in Google’s switch guide specifically ties transferred information to the selected Google Account.

Set up a Galaxy for a child

Use the child’s supervised Google Account

During Android setup, sign in with the child’s Google Account and complete the parent-verification prompts. Google describes account-level Family Link controls such as Search filters, Play controls, Chrome restrictions, screen-time limits, location on GPS-enabled devices, app limits, and app blocking. Which controls appear can vary by device. Read Google’s child sign-in instructions.

Consider Samsung’s Galaxy family controls

Samsung UK documents an additional route at Settings > Samsung account > Family. Its family tools describe web-content choices, age ratings for apps and games, downloads and purchases, and a Family Link section for daily limits, downtime, app limits, and content restrictions after parental controls are set up. Samsung says these Samsung parental controls for child accounts require One UI 6.1 or higher. The guide is UK-specific, so check the actual model, software, country, and menu labels before following exact steps: Samsung UK’s Galaxy for Families guide.

Check the phone before erasing the old one

  1. Check the items the owner cares about: contacts, texts, photos, videos, messaging apps, and important files.
  2. Open important apps and confirm that their data or account access is present. Some app data and other items may not transfer in the standard Android setup flow.
  3. Update the Galaxy and install only the apps the family member needs.
  4. Show the user how to unlock the phone, answer calls, adjust volume, and open Settings.
  5. Only after the owner confirms the important data is present should the old phone be erased, traded in, or recycled. Google’s switch guidance likewise advises clearing and resetting the old device after confirming the copy.
