Before you leave, update your Galaxy and apps, strengthen the screen lock, check account recovery, enable device finding and backup, and plan how you will connect at your destination. These steps reduce the chance that a stolen phone, compromised account, or connectivity problem leaves you without your data or access.
What to do before you leave
- Update the phone and apps. Install available updates over a trusted connection and leave time to resolve any problems. The U.S. Department of State advises installing the latest phone, tablet, and app updates before departure in its Communicating While Abroad guidance, last updated May 8, 2026. On Galaxy devices, review Settings > Security and privacy for security updates, Google Play system updates, app protection, and permission review. Names and availability vary by model and software.
- Check account recovery. Review recovery methods for your Google and Samsung accounts. Make sure you can access them without relying only on the Galaxy or its primary SIM. Store recovery information securely somewhere separate from the phone; do not leave passwords or recovery codes in an easily accessible note on the device.
- Set a strong screen lock. Google recommends a PIN of six or more digits or a unique password. Biometrics can make unlocking easier, but keep a strong fallback credential. Hide sensitive notification content on the lock screen so message previews do not reveal private information to someone viewing or holding the phone.
- Set up recovery and backup. Confirm the phone is signed in to your Google account, Location and Find Hub are on, and device backup is enabled. Record the IMEI from Settings > About phone and keep it outside the device. Check whether your model also offers Samsung lost-device protection or Find My Mobile under Settings > Security and privacy.
- Review the SIM PIN. Ask your carrier or consult the SIM documentation before setting one. Google warns that some carriers use a publicly available default PIN; change it rather than assuming it is private. A SIM PIN can affect startup and SIM-replacement workflows.
- Choose network protections and travel connectivity. Review Auto Blocker and decide how you will get service abroad; details are below.
- Pack charging and backup communication options. Bring a destination-compatible charger and plug adapter, and keep important contacts somewhere accessible if the phone is lost.
How to lock down the phone and prepare recovery
Reduce what is visible when the phone is locked
Use a unique passcode rather than a predictable pattern or a short PIN. Set lock-screen notifications to hide sensitive content; exact controls differ across Android versions and Galaxy models. This does not prevent someone from seeing every notification indicator, but it can keep message text and other private details from appearing on the locked display.
Make Find Hub useful before a loss
Google’s Android theft-protection guidance explains that Find Hub can locate, secure, or erase an Android device when the relevant account and settings are in place. Configure it before travel, not after the phone goes missing. Also enable backup so a lost or erased handset is not the only copy of important data.
Samsung devices may offer additional lost-device controls, but supported services and prerequisites vary. Check the actual options on your handset in Settings > Security and privacy and verify the relevant account and location settings. Do not assume that one finding service covers every offline situation, market, or Galaxy model.

Separate especially sensitive files when supported
Samsung Secure Folder provides a separately locked area for selected files and apps on supported devices. To set it up, go to Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder, sign in with a Samsung account, choose a lock method, and move or copy only the files that merit extra separation. Samsung notes that some older models may not support it. Hiding the Secure Folder icon does not make its contents invulnerable, and Secure Folder is not a substitute for backup.
Should you enable Samsung Auto Blocker?
Auto Blocker can reduce exposure to certain unauthorized installs and connections. Samsung says it can block app installs from unauthorized sources, USB cable commands, suspected malicious images in supported messaging apps, and unofficial software updates. On supported devices, the setting is under Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker. Availability and menu labels depend on model and software version. See Samsung UK’s Auto Blocker guidance.

Understand Maximum restrictions before turning it on
Maximum restrictions adds controls such as app scanning, blocking device-admin apps and work profiles, blocking 2G networks, preventing automatic reconnection to previously used unsecured Wi-Fi, suppressing link previews, blocking shared albums, and removing location data from some shared pictures. These settings can interfere with work profiles or other features you rely on. In areas with only 2G service, Samsung warns, “calls, messages, and mobile data may not work while this setting is enabled.” Consider your destination coverage and work needs before enabling it; it is an option, not a universal travel requirement.

Choose mobile service for the destination
There is no single best travel connection. Compare your home carrier’s roaming, a local SIM, and an international eSIM against the destination, your handset, and how important it is to keep receiving calls or account-verification messages on your usual number.

The State Department notes that some countries require local SIM registration with identification. Ask your carrier about roaming and verify local requirements for the specific destination. Save emergency contacts, local emergency numbers, and the relevant embassy or consulate details both on your phone and somewhere you can reach without it.

The State Department cautions that public networks may not be secure and recommends trusted VPN or VoIP apps. CISA’s Holiday Traveling with Personal Internet-Enabled Devices advises against banking, shopping, or sharing sensitive information over open public Wi-Fi. Avoid treating any VPN as a guarantee that a network is safe; the cited guidance does not endorse a particular provider.

Avoid connecting the phone by USB to an untrusted public computer or charging station. CISA warns that a connected computer can interact with a mobile device in unexpected ways, and Samsung says Auto Blocker can block USB cable commands. This concern is about a data connection to an untrusted device; a normal wall charger is a different use case.

Pack the right charger and a backup contact list
- Check the destination’s plug type and bring a suitable travel adapter and phone charger. Verify the charger’s power specifications for the device and destination; a plug adapter alone does not convert voltage.
- Keep a printed or separately stored list of important contacts, emergency numbers, and other details you would need if the Galaxy were unavailable.
- Consider a backup communication method if losing the primary phone would cut off essential contact. The State Department’s travel guidance recommends planning backup communications.
