To set up Red5 on Ubuntu, first identify whether you downloaded the open-source Red5 Server or the commercial Red5 Pro distribution. They use different installers, release requirements and service names. For an open-source installation, unpack Red5 in a fixed directory, install Apache jsvc, correct the supplied service script, then enable its systemd unit. For Red5 Pro, use the installer and Java version documented for that exact release.
Install the server and verify it locally before opening the firewall. The usual Red5 Pro web endpoint is TCP port 5080, while RTMP normally uses TCP port 1935. WebRTC and RTSP require additional ports, TLS and, for many deployments, a broad UDP range for ICE/TURN traffic.

Red5 Server and Red5 Pro are related but are not interchangeable installation paths. The open-source project documents a Linux daemon based on jsvc and an init/service script. Red5 Pro is a commercial distribution with its own installer, license handling, release-specific Java requirements and WebRTC dependencies.

Do not copy a command from a Red5 Pro release page into an open-source installation, or vice versa. Record the exact Red5 release, Ubuntu release and Java major version in your deployment notes; those three details determine whether a later upgrade is compatible.

Prepare Ubuntu for a native open-source installation
1. Select a stable installation directory
Use a path that will not change when you log in or reboot. The examples below use /opt/red5. A fixed path makes service files, log collection and upgrades predictable.
sudo mkdir -p /opt/red5
sudo chown root:root /opt/red5
sudo chmod 755 /opt/red5Set RED5_HOME to the directory containing the unpacked Red5 distribution, not to its parent directory. For an interactive shell you can export it temporarily:
export RED5_HOME=/opt/red5A systemd service does not inherit your shell’s exports. Put the value in the service unit or an environment file that the unit explicitly reads.
2. Obtain and unpack the Red5 archive
Download the archive from the open-source project’s release or archive channel, checking that it is the distribution you intend to run. Keep the original archive so that you can identify the version during an incident or reproduce the installation.

If it does, move or rename that directory to /opt/red5 only after checking its contents. The final directory should contain the Red5 configuration, libraries, scripts and the supplied service files. Do not point RED5_HOME at a directory that merely contains the extracted directory.
3. Install Apache jsvc
The documented Linux daemon uses Apache jsvc together with the Red5 init/service script. Install it from Ubuntu’s package repositories:

command -v jsvc
jsvc -help | headIf command -v returns nothing, the package is missing or the service’s PATH does not include its location. Fix that before attempting to start Red5.
4. Check Java and edit the supplied service files
Red5 Java compatibility is release-dependent. Check the release notes for the archive you downloaded, then verify the runtime Ubuntu will use:

echo "$JAVA_HOME"Set JAVA_HOME to the Java installation directory, not to the bin directory. The supplied init or service script must agree with both RED5_HOME and JAVA_HOME. Open it with an editor and check, at minimum:
RED5_HOMEpoints to/opt/red5(or your chosen final directory).JAVA_HOMEpoints to the runtime required by the Red5 release.- The
jsvcpath is valid and executable. - The working directory exists.
- The Java classpath, daemon user and log paths refer to files inside the unpacked distribution.
Do not replace the distribution’s service script with a generic Java command. Red5’s daemon wrapper supplies startup and shutdown behavior that the generic command may omit.
5. Install and enable the systemd unit
The project service instructions provide a red5.service file. Copy that file into systemd’s unit directory, then inspect it before enabling it:
sudo cp /opt/red5/red5.service /etc/systemd/system/red5.service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl cat red5If the file is stored in a subdirectory, use that exact path when copying it. In the unit, verify the environment values, ExecStart, WorkingDirectory and any referenced user or log directory. A unit can load successfully while still failing at startup if one of those paths is wrong.
sudo systemctl enable red5
sudo systemctl start red5
sudo systemctl status red5 --no-pagerenable makes Red5 start during boot; it does not start the process immediately, which is why the separate start command is used. If you change the unit later, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload before restarting it.

6. Verify locally before exposing the host
Read the service journal and Red5 logs immediately after the first start:
sudo journalctl -u red5 -b --no-pager
sudo ss -ltnp | grep -E ':(1935|5080)b'
curl -I http://127.0.0.1:5080The HTTP check should return a response from the Red5 web service. A listening socket proves that a process has bound the port, but not that a stream or WebRTC application is configured correctly. Resolve startup errors locally before changing DNS, a cloud security group or a public firewall.
Install Red5 Pro on Ubuntu
Red5 Pro has more than one supported installation path. Match the instructions to the release you downloaded rather than selecting Java or Ubuntu based on a different version.
Requirements documented for the older Ubuntu guide
The Red5 Pro Ubuntu guide for its release line targets 64-bit Ubuntu 20.04 and lists Java 11 plus these packages:

sudo apt-get install unzip libva2 libva-drm2 libva-x11-2 libvdpau1 jsvc ntpInstall the Java 11 package appropriate to that Ubuntu image and confirm it with java -version. Do not use this list as proof that a newer Red5 Pro release supports Java 11.
Current Red5 Pro service requirements
Current Red5 Pro service documentation uses /usr/lib/jvm/java-21-openjdk-amd64 as the Ubuntu JAVA_HOME example and still requires jsvc. Red5 Pro v15 upgrade guidance explicitly requires OpenJDK 21. For such a release, install the OpenJDK 21 package available for your Ubuntu version, then verify that the path exists:
java -version
ls -ld /usr/lib/jvm/java-21-openjdk-amd64
command -v jsvcIf the path differs on your image, use the actual OpenJDK directory in the service configuration. The important condition is that the major version and JAVA_HOME match the exact Red5 Pro release.

Use the menu-driven installer when the release supports it
For Red5 Pro 12.0 and later, the menu-driven installer documentation targets Ubuntu 22.04. It requires Git and sudo and can install a release, configure Let’s Encrypt SSL, manage the service and add or update a license. Install the prerequisites first:

sudo apt-get install git sudoRun the installer supplied with your Red5 Pro package and follow its menu for the release, license and service options. Because installer filenames and menu labels vary by release, do not substitute a command from another version. Record which release the menu installed and whether it configured certificates; that determines which service and firewall checks you perform next.
Start and inspect the Red5 Pro service
Use the service name supplied by the installed release, normally red5pro:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable red5pro
sudo systemctl start red5pro
sudo systemctl status red5pro --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u red5pro -b --no-pagerWhen the instance is running, test the web interface from the server itself on port 5080. A local response confirms that the process and HTTP binding work before you troubleshoot public routing.
Configure Red5 ports and bindings
Red5 Pro documents the default properties rtmp.port=1935 and http.port=5080 in conf/red5.properties. If those ports conflict with another service, edit the properties file and then restart the appropriate service.
sudoedit /opt/red5/conf/red5.properties
sudo systemctl restart red5
# or, for Red5 Pro:
sudo systemctl restart red5proUse the actual RED5_HOME for your installation. After a change, confirm the new listener with ss rather than assuming that a successful restart applied the setting.

Only expose the ports your applications use. Apply the same policy in Ubuntu’s host firewall and in the cloud provider’s security group; opening one while blocking the other produces misleading connection failures.

Open the Ubuntu firewall safely
If UFW is enabled, add only the required rules. The following opens the common Red5 Pro ports; remove rules that do not apply to your deployment:
sudo ufw allow 5080/tcp
sudo ufw allow 1935/tcp
sudo ufw allow 8554/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw allow 40000:65535/udp
sudo ufw status numberedFor administration ports and client traffic, restrict the source CIDR whenever possible instead of allowing the entire Internet. Mirror those restrictions in the cloud security group. Do not open the TURN range until WebRTC is configured to use it, because a large UDP range increases the exposed attack surface.

Make WebRTC work beyond localhost
A Red5 process listening locally is not enough for browser playback. Public WebRTC requires secure HTTPS or secure WebSocket access with a valid certificate, correct public address advertisement and reachable ICE/TURN traffic. Use TCP 443 for the secure entry point and allow the UDP range required by the Red5 Pro deployment.
- Confirm the certificate name matches the public DNS name and that the certificate is not expired.
- Test renewal before relying on a certificate in production.
- Check that the server advertises its public address rather than a private cloud or container address.
- Verify that both the host firewall and cloud security group pass UDP 40000-65535 when the deployment requires that range.
- Test from a network outside the server’s LAN; localhost testing cannot reveal NAT or firewall problems.
Run Red5 with Docker instead of a native service
The official Red5 Docker repository documents the mondain/red5 image. Its latest tag is identified as Red5 2.0.29 with JDK 21. Docker can simplify process isolation and upgrades, but it does not remove the need to plan ports, persistent data and TLS.

mondain/red5Map RTSP, HTTPS and the required UDP media range only when your application uses them. Before production use, identify the image’s documented configuration and log directories and bind persistent host or named volumes to those paths. Without persistent volumes, deleting and recreating the container can discard configuration and logs. Keep the image tag pinned to a tested release rather than allowing an unplanned latest update.
Container networking also changes the public-address problem: WebRTC must advertise an address reachable by clients, not an internal container address. Test the mapped ports from the host and from an external network before declaring the deployment complete.
Choose native installation, Docker or the Red5 Pro installer

Troubleshoot startup and connectivity failures
The service fails immediately
- Run
java -versionand compare the major version with the Red5 release requirements. - Check that
JAVA_HOMEnames the Java installation directory and that the executable exists beneath it. - Verify that
RED5_HOMEis the unpacked distribution, not its parent directory. - Confirm that
jsvcis installed and executable. - Inspect
systemctl statusandjournalctlfor the first path or permission error, then correct that error before restarting.
Systemd reports a bad executable or working directory
Run sudo systemctl cat red5 or sudo systemctl cat red5pro and check every path in ExecStart, WorkingDirectory, environment settings and log configuration. A unit copied from another server often still points to that server’s Java or Red5 directory. After editing, reload systemd and restart the service.
Port 5080 is closed
First test curl -I http://127.0.0.1:5080. If localhost fails, inspect the Red5 logs and the http.port property. If localhost works but a remote client fails, compare the listening address, UFW rules and cloud security group. Check the same sequence for TCP 1935 when RTMP is the failing protocol.
RTMP works but WebRTC fails
RTMP success does not validate WebRTC. Check TLS on the public HTTPS endpoint, certificate validity, public/private address advertisement and the UDP 40000-65535 path. A blocked TURN range or NAT mapping commonly allows the web page to load while preventing media negotiation.
A Docker replacement loses settings
Inspect the image documentation for its configuration and log paths, then recreate the container with persistent volumes. Keep the image tag and configuration versioned together. Always test the replacement container locally before changing public DNS or firewall rules.

Production checklist
- Write down the Red5 distribution, exact release, Ubuntu version and Java major version.
- Keep
RED5_HOMEstable and verify that service files reference the final directory. - Install and test
jsvcbefore enabling the service. - Use
systemctl enableand confirm that Red5 starts after a reboot. - Check logs and listening sockets after every configuration or upgrade.
- Verify port 5080 locally before opening public access.
- Open only the RTMP, RTSP, HTTPS and UDP ports your applications require.
- Mirror host-firewall rules in the cloud security group.
- Use HTTPS and a valid, renewable certificate for Internet-facing WebRTC.
- Back up configuration, licenses and logs before replacing an archive, installer release or container.
