You can livestream an audio-only podcast on YouTube by sending your microphone or program audio through a live encoder and pairing it with a still image or another simple visual. YouTube needs a video feed for a live broadcast, even when the show itself has no camera. That is a different workflow from publishing prerecorded episodes through an RSS feed, which can create static-image videos in supported regions.
Choose between publishing an episode and going live
If the episode is already recorded, you can publish it on YouTube as an on-demand podcast episode. If you want listeners to join while the show is happening, create a YouTube Live event and send it an encoder feed.
| Decision | RSS episode publishing | Encoder livestream |
|---|---|---|
| When it happens | Prerecorded episode from a podcast feed | Real-time broadcast |
| What you provide | RSS feed and episode audio; YouTube makes static-image videos using show art | A live encoder sends audio and video to YouTube |
| Where it appears | YouTube and YouTube Music through this RSS feature; it does not distribute to other podcast platforms | A YouTube Live event; streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived |
| Main limitation | RSS ingestion is available only in select regions | Channel eligibility, encoder setup, and a reliable upload connection |
YouTube describes its podcast format this way: “On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist, and podcast episodes are videos within that playlist.” See YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance.

For prerecorded audio episodes
If you have an RSS feed and the feature is available in your region, submit the feed in YouTube Studio. YouTube can use your show artwork to create static-image videos, and new feed episodes can upload automatically. Wait until the episodes have uploaded before making the podcast public if you need to check for errors. Review uploaded videos for copyright or monetization issues.

If RSS ingestion is not available to you, or you do not have an RSS feed, upload each episode as a video paired with the podcast thumbnail or another visual. You can also create an audiogram or a video with movement. YouTube outlines these options in its podcast guidance.
For a live audio-focused show
Use the livestream steps below. The audio can be the main content, but the encoder still needs to send video; a still image is a simple way to provide it. YouTube’s guidance on podcast videos and live encoders supports the two parts of this setup, while using a still image during a live broadcast is a practical implementation choice.

Check that your channel can livestream
Before planning a show, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Prepare the audio, image, and encoder
Choose your audio source
Route your microphone or the podcast’s program audio into the encoder. Listen to the signal before going live: check that the correct input is selected, speech is clear, and the audio is not clipping or unexpectedly muted. You can start with equipment you already own; YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A separate microphone is optional if your existing setup does not provide the sound you need.

Make a simple visual
Prepare a still image such as your podcast cover art, or use another simple visual. Add the image as the encoder’s video source and confirm that it fills the intended frame. Use artwork you have the right to use, including any logos, photographs, or music associated with it.
Connect the encoder to YouTube
Choose YouTube or RTMP in your encoder if it offers a YouTube connection. Otherwise, enter the server URL and stream key shown for your event in YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio before broadcasting again. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.

Create the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for the intended date and time.
- Set the event details. Add a clear title, description, and visibility setting. Choose public, unlisted, or private according to who should be able to watch and whether you are testing.
- Copy the connection details. Get the server URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings, then add them to your encoder if it is not already connected through a YouTube integration.
- Configure the encoder’s sources. Send the microphone or program audio and the still image or other visual. Confirm that the outgoing audio meter responds when you speak or play the episode.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Verify that the watch page opens with the intended visibility before announcing the event.
Use sensible encoder settings
Exact menus vary by encoder. YouTube’s general recommendations are a starting point, not a universal bitrate prescription. Match the output resolution to the visual you are sending and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. See YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations and the settings table for streaming resolutions.

| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends 2 seconds |

Leave upload headroom instead of configuring the stream to consume all available bandwidth. YouTube’s network guidance recommends 20% upload headroom and says to account for primary and backup stream needs where applicable. Test the upload path from the location where you will broadcast, since other devices and network activity can affect capacity. See YouTube’s network and stream stability guidance.

Test and run the broadcast
- Allow time for setup. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Use a private or unlisted test if appropriate. Check the full path from microphone and visual through encoder to the YouTube preview. Confirm speech is audible, the image is correct, and the watch page is accessible to the intended audience.
- Monitor during the show. Keep Live Control Room visible so you can notice warnings or quality changes. Listen for dropouts, distortion, background noise, and delays; watch for a frozen or missing visual.
- End the stream deliberately. Stop the encoder after the broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check the resulting recording and listen to the audio after the event.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending to the event, or the server URL or stream key is wrong | Confirm the event connection details, encoder destination, and that the encoder is running. Reset an exposed key and update the encoder. |
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not verified, has a restriction, or first-time activation is still pending | Check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio and enable live streaming ahead of the event; initial activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| Viewers cannot hear the podcast | Wrong input, muted source, or audio not routed to the encoder | Select the intended microphone or program source, inspect the encoder’s audio meter, and verify sound in the Live Control Room preview. |
| Audio breaks up or the stream loses quality | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating | Test the connection, lower output demands if necessary, stop competing uploads, and retain the recommended network headroom. |
| Image is missing or wrong | The visual source is absent, hidden, or misconfigured | Check the encoder scene/source and confirm the intended image appears in the preview before going public. |
| Copyright or monetization warning | Episode audio, music, artwork, or other material may be claimed or restricted | Review YouTube’s notice and the rights for each asset; do not assume that podcast ownership or a static image clears third-party material. |
