Pair the Pixel Watch with your compatible Android phone, then use the Google Pixel Watch app to disable notifications from distracting apps. For a broader pause after work, use a notification mode from the watch’s Quick Settings. If you also want to prevent opening those apps on the phone, add Android Digital Wellbeing Focus mode. The exact modes and menu labels depend on your watch generation and software.
What this setup actually blocks
A Pixel Watch can reduce interruptions in two different ways:
- Watch notification control: You decide which phone or watch apps may send alerts to the watch. This lets you keep useful messages while removing alerts from selected apps.
- Broad watch modes: Do Not Disturb, Bedtime or Cinema mode can silence most or all watch alerts for a period of time, subject to each mode’s exceptions.
Neither approach automatically prevents you from opening distracting apps on the phone. To pause those apps and withhold their phone notifications, use Focus mode in Android Digital Wellbeing as a separate phone-side setting.

Prepare the phone and watch
Google lists a charging cable, a Google Account, a compatible Android phone running current software, internet access and the latest Google Pixel Watch app among the setup requirements. The charging cable is included with the watch purchase, so the documented setup does not require a separate accessory or paid app.
- Charge both the watch and phone so neither device shuts down during pairing.
- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app on the Android phone.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
- Allow location permission when the app requests it. The permission is part of Google’s pairing instructions.
- Turn on the watch by holding its crown for about three seconds.
- Connect the phone to the internet and keep the watch close to the phone.
These steps apply to the initial setup. If the watch was previously paired to another phone, the app may present additional transfer or reset instructions; follow the prompts shown for that watch rather than assuming the first-time flow will be identical.
There is no documented need for a replacement charger, subscription, repair part or third-party notification tool to complete this setup. If you are considering a watch purchase rather than configuring one you already own, check phone and generation compatibility first instead of assuming every Pixel Watch works with every Android handset.
See Google’s Set up Google Pixel Watch instructions for the compatibility and pairing requirements that apply to your device.
Pair the Pixel Watch with your Android phone
- Place the powered-on watch beside the Android phone with Bluetooth enabled.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Start the setup flow shown in the app and select the watch when it appears.
- Accept the pairing prompts on both devices. Keep the watch near the phone while the app completes setup and any required updates.
- When pairing finishes, verify that the app displays Connected.
Do not begin configuring notification rules until the app reports the watch as connected. Notification controls depend on the phone app communicating with the paired watch. If more than one watch appears during setup, select the one whose pairing code matches the code shown on the watch.
Keep the phone unlocked when a setup prompt asks for confirmation, and leave both devices undisturbed until the flow finishes. Interrupting pairing or moving the watch out of range can leave you with a partially configured connection that looks complete but does not reliably deliver alerts.
Disable distracting apps while keeping important alerts
Per-app notification control is the most precise way to block phone distractions after work without silencing everything. You can leave messages, calls or calendar alerts enabled while turning off the apps that tend to pull you back into the phone.

- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on the phone.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Choose the phone or watch app whose alerts you want to manage.
- Turn that app’s watch notifications on or off.
Repeat the process for each distracting app. For example, you can disable a social-network or shopping app while leaving a communication app enabled for people who may need you after work. You can also leave alarms enabled while filtering entertainment alerts. Make the list match the kind of evening you want: a selective filter is better when one or two work-critical apps must remain available, while a broad mode is quicker when you want everything quiet.
The setting controls delivery to the watch; it does not uninstall the app or stop notifications from appearing on the phone itself. It also does not prevent you from opening the app manually. That distinction is the main reason to combine this setting with phone-side Focus mode when your goal is to block access, not just wrist interruptions.
Google documents this path in Set alarms and manage notifications on the Google Pixel Watch. If an app is not listed or the labels differ, update the Pixel Watch app and check the notification settings available for your watch generation.
Use Quick Settings for a fast after-work pause
Per-app rules are useful when you want a lasting filter. A Quick Settings mode is faster when you want a broad pause as soon as your workday ends. This is a manual action unless your particular model and software expose a scheduling option.
- Wake the watch and swipe down from the watch face to open Quick Settings.
- Tap the notification mode available on your watch.
- Read the mode’s indicator so you know it is active.
- When you are ready to receive normal alerts again, open Quick Settings and tap the active mode to turn it off.
Google’s notification guidance does not expose every mode on every generation. If a mode described below is missing, use the controls shown in your watch’s Quick Settings instead of assuming the watch supports it. A mode may also remain active after you no longer need it, so check the icon before troubleshooting missing alerts.
Do Not Disturb
Google describes Do Not Disturb as turning off notifications and silencing incoming calls. On watches where the option is available, press and hold the Do Not Disturb control to customize exceptions such as priority callers, repeat callers, alarms and media sounds.
The cited Google guide marks Do Not Disturb as available only for Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 when used with Pixel phones. That availability statement is not a promise that every watch, phone or software build exposes the same control, so verify it on your devices. If you need an urgent call to get through, review the exception settings instead of assuming DND is a total blackout.

Bedtime mode
Bedtime mode is intended for a quieter period rather than an absolute blackout. Google says it disables notifications except alarms, priority callers and repeat callers. Those exceptions mean an urgent or designated alert may still reach the watch after work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Google specifically describes automatic Bedtime entry and exit for Pixel Watch 4. On other generations, look for a manual Bedtime control or any scheduling option your software provides; do not assume that automatic behavior is universal. Because alarms remain an exception, Bedtime can be a better choice than Cinema mode when you want a wake-up alarm or selected callers to remain possible.
Cinema mode
Cinema mode suppresses notifications and incoming calls while temporarily turning off the screen. It is useful when you do not want the display lighting up, but it is a broad temporary mode rather than a per-app filter. It also does not pause apps or notifications on the phone itself.
Google’s guidance on Bedtime behavior is available in Charge Google Pixel Watch and tips to improve battery life. Mode descriptions and availability can change with software updates.
Pause distracting phone apps with Focus mode
If the main problem is opening an app on the phone—not merely seeing its alert on the watch—configure Focus mode on a Pixel phone. Focus mode pauses the apps you select and withholds their notifications while the mode is active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Settings on the Pixel phone.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing.
- Open Focus mode.
- Select the apps you want paused after work.
- Tap Turn on now to start immediately, or set a schedule for recurring after-work hours.
- Use a temporary break when you need short access to a paused app, then let Focus mode resume.
While Focus mode is on, paused apps cannot be used normally and their notifications are withheld. This is separate from the Pixel Watch app’s notification list: disabling an app on the watch does not pause the same app on the phone, and pausing it with Focus mode does not replace choosing which watch alerts are allowed.
Focus mode is therefore the documented way to add a recurring phone-side boundary. A schedule is useful for a regular workday, while Turn on now is better for an occasional early finish or a weekend block. A temporary break is an exception, not a permanent removal of the app from the paused list.

Google explains the phone-side controls in Manage how you spend time on your Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet with Digital Wellbeing. The documented path is for Pixel phones and Pixel Tablets; other Android phones may use different menus or may not expose the same Focus mode controls.
Choose the right combination
| Option | Scope | Exceptions | Effect on the phone | Schedule | Generation notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per-app watch notifications | Only the apps you select | Other enabled apps continue to alert | Does not pause apps or remove phone notifications | Configured as a standing notification choice; a separate timed control is not established in the documented path | Use the App notifications menu available in your Pixel Watch app |
| Do Not Disturb | Broad watch-level silence | Priority or repeat callers, alarms and media sounds can be configured where supported | Does not pause phone apps | Usually activated from Quick Settings; exact scheduling depends on the software shown | Google marks the cited guide’s DND control for Pixel Watch 2 and 3 with Pixel phones |
| Bedtime | Broad watch-level reduction | Alarms, priority callers and repeat callers can still come through | Does not pause phone apps | Automatic entry and exit is specifically described for Pixel Watch 4; other models may require manual control | Check your watch’s available Quick Settings |
| Cinema mode | Broad temporary suppression | No ordinary notification or incoming-call delivery while active | Does not pause phone apps | Manual temporary mode from Quick Settings | Availability and naming can vary |
| Android Focus mode | Selected phone apps | Use a temporary break when access is necessary | Pauses selected apps and withholds their notifications | Can be turned on immediately or scheduled | Documented for Pixel phones and Pixel Tablets; phone menus may differ elsewhere |
A practical after-work setup is to disable the most distracting apps under Settings > Notifications > App notifications, then use Focus mode when you want those apps unavailable on the phone. Add Bedtime or Do Not Disturb when you want the watch itself to stay broadly quiet.
Choose based on five questions:
- Do you need only a filter? Use per-app watch notifications.
- Do you want every ordinary watch alert paused? Use a broad Quick Settings mode.
- Must alarms or selected callers still reach you? Review Bedtime or DND exceptions.
- Do you keep opening the phone apps? Add Focus mode.
- Does the routine repeat every weekday? Schedule Focus mode, then confirm whether your watch offers any corresponding automatic mode.
Build a repeatable after-work routine
For selective quiet
Use the per-app notification list when you still need timely calls, messages or alarms. This approach avoids the all-or-nothing behavior of a broad mode and keeps the watch useful for genuinely important alerts. Revisit the list if your responsibilities change; leaving an old work app enabled can recreate the same distraction you were trying to remove.
For a complete phone break
Enable Focus mode for the phone apps that invite habitual checking. Then select a watch mode if seeing any alert would interrupt your evening. Because Focus mode can be scheduled, it is the documented option for recurring phone-side enforcement. If you take a temporary break from Focus mode, remember that the selected app can become usable and its notifications can resume during that break.
For sleep or a screen-free period
Bedtime is the better fit when alarms and designated callers must remain possible. Cinema mode is appropriate for a short period when incoming calls, notifications and the display should be suppressed together. Check the active icon afterward so a temporary quiet mode does not remain enabled unintentionally.
Common mistakes and pitfalls
- Confusing watch silence with phone blocking: Turning off an app in the Pixel Watch app affects watch delivery, not access to the phone app. Add Focus mode for that second layer.
- Expecting a broad mode to preserve every alert: DND, Bedtime and Cinema mode have different exception rules. Read the behavior of the mode you selected.
- Assuming every generation has the same controls: The availability of DND and automatic Bedtime behavior differs in Google’s guidance. Inspect your own Quick Settings.
- Forgetting the connection requirement: A watch may not receive phone-originated notifications when the phone is off or the watch lacks Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or LTE connectivity.
- Leaving a mode enabled: A mode that helped during dinner can make expected alerts appear “broken” later. Turn it off when the quiet period ends.
- Testing only with an important alert: After changing settings, send a harmless test notification so you can confirm delivery without risking a missed urgent message.
Troubleshoot alerts that still appear
An unwanted app continues to notify the watch
- Return to Google Pixel Watch app > Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Confirm you changed the watch notification switch for the correct app.
- Check whether a watch mode is active; a mode may be changing delivery in the opposite direction from what you expect.
- Confirm that the Pixel Watch app and watch software are current, then reopen the app.
- Make sure you changed the watch setting rather than only changing a notification setting on the phone.
Expected alerts are missing
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says to check that the phone is turned on and that the watch is connected through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, or has LTE service. A watch without a supported connection may not receive phone-originated alerts normally.

The watch shows disconnected
- Keep the phone and watch near each other and make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- Verify that the phone has internet access.
- Open the Pixel Watch app and wait for the status to change to Connected.
- If the watch is away from the phone, confirm that it has Wi-Fi or active LTE service where applicable.
- After the connection returns, test with a non-critical notification before relying on the setup for important alerts.
For Google’s connection-specific checks, see Fix notification issues on your Google Pixel Watch.
Generation and software limitations to check
The Pixel Watch family does not expose one universal notification interface. Google’s cited documentation calls out two important differences:
- Do Not Disturb is identified as available for Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 with Pixel phones in the notification guide.
- Automatic Bedtime entry and exit is specifically described for Pixel Watch 4.
These differences are why the article uses “where available” for several modes. Before planning an automated routine, open Quick Settings on the watch and inspect the controls actually provided. Also check the Pixel Watch app’s current Notifications menu after software updates; labels and placement can change. Do not treat a setting shown in a guide for one generation as proof that the same setting exists on another.
Final setup checklist
- The watch and phone are charged, online and paired in the Google Pixel Watch app.
- The app status reads Connected.
- Bluetooth and the required location permission are enabled during setup.
- Distracting apps are disabled under Settings > Notifications > App notifications in the Pixel Watch app.
- A Quick Settings mode is selected only when its exceptions match your needs.
- Focus mode is configured on the phone if you also need to prevent opening selected apps.
- The phone remains on and the watch has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or LTE connectivity when notifications matter.
- Your watch generation’s available modes have been verified instead of assumed from another Pixel Watch model.
- You have tested one ordinary notification after making the changes.
- You know how to turn off the active watch mode and end a Focus mode break when normal alerts are needed again.

Do I need to buy a separate charger or paid app?
No separate accessory or paid app is required by the documented setup. Google lists a charging cable among the prerequisites and says it is included with the watch purchase.
The Bottom Line
For the most practical after-work boundary, disable selected distractions in Google Pixel Watch app > Settings > Notifications > App notifications, add Pixel-phone Focus mode when you need those apps paused, and use Bedtime, Do Not Disturb or Cinema mode for broader watch silence. Confirm the controls and exceptions on your own Pixel Watch generation, then verify that the phone and watch remain connected when important alerts must get through.
