To set up a Pixel Watch 4, use the Google Pixel Watch app on a compatible Android phone, verify the matching Bluetooth code, and finish the guided account and watch-preference steps. LTE activation is optional and happens only after the watch has paired successfully.

Check compatibility before you begin

Pixel Watch 4 works with most phones running Android 11.0 or newer. You also need a Google Account, the Google Pixel Watch app, and an internet connection on the phone. The model-specific Android 11 requirement is the one to use for Pixel Watch 4; broader Pixel Watch setup pages may show different minimum versions for other models.

Requirement What to check
Phone software Android 11.0 or newer
Account A Google Account you can sign in to during setup
App The current Google Pixel Watch app
Connectivity Bluetooth enabled and the phone connected to the internet
Permissions Location permission and the app’s nearby-device permission allowed when requested
Watch model Pixel Watch 4 in either the 41 mm or 45 mm size; LTE activation depends on having an LTE model

If the phone is on an older Android release, update it before opening the watch app. A phone that cannot meet the model’s minimum software requirement will not become compatible through a later pairing retry.

Know what is and is not required

You do not need an LTE plan, a separate desktop program, or a paid subscription to pair Pixel Watch 4 with a phone. The ordinary setup route is Bluetooth pairing through the Google Pixel Watch app. Cellular service is an additional setup path for the LTE hardware only.

  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]

  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

Both the 41 mm and 45 mm versions use the same phone-compatibility check described above. Confirm the exact model before troubleshooting: an LTE watch can still be used for regular Bluetooth setup, while a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth model cannot be upgraded to cellular service by adding a plan.

Prepare the phone and watch

Charge both devices

Give the phone and watch enough charge to complete setup and any software updates. Keep the watch on its charger or nearby during the process if its battery is low. Pixel Watch 4 includes a USB-C Quick Charge Dock in the box. Google lists a minimum 7.5-watt compatible adapter for the dock; the USB-C power adapter itself is not included, so use a suitable adapter you already have rather than buying one automatically.

Place the dock on a stable surface before starting. If the watch needs to install an update during setup, a low battery can interrupt the process or make it appear to stop. Charging the phone as well prevents Android from closing the setup app to conserve power.

Update software and the app

Install available updates for the phone, the Google Pixel Watch app, and the watch firmware before pairing. Updates can change the screens you see, so allow the app to finish any update it starts instead of closing it midway. If the app was installed long ago for another watch, open it and update it before beginning a new setup.

Keep automatic-update prompts visible until they finish. Starting setup with an outdated app can produce different menus from those shown in current instructions, and an older watch firmware may need additional time after the initial connection.

Turn on the required settings

  • Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
  • Connect the phone to the internet over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Allow location permission for the Pixel Watch app when Android asks.
  • Allow the app to find and communicate with nearby devices.
  • Make sure airplane mode is off on both devices.

These permissions are part of Android’s device-discovery process. Denying them can prevent the watch from appearing even when Bluetooth is switched on. If you previously denied a permission, open Android’s app-permission settings, select Google Pixel Watch, and allow the requested access before trying again.

Fit the band and power on the watch

Attach and adjust the band so you can wear the watch comfortably after setup. Turn on Pixel Watch 4 by holding its crown for about three seconds. Wait for the startup screen, then place the watch next to the phone; keeping them close reduces the chance that the app loses the Bluetooth discovery session.

Do not begin by trying to pair from Android’s general Bluetooth list. The Pixel Watch app needs to perform the watch-specific setup, account sign-in, backup choice, and software update sequence.

Pair Pixel Watch 4 with the phone

  1. Open setup. With the watch beside the phone, wait for a fast-pairing prompt if one appears. If no prompt appears, open the Google Pixel Watch app and choose the option to start setting up a watch.
  2. Select the watch. Follow the app’s on-screen instructions and select Pixel Watch 4 when it is listed. If multiple nearby watches appear, use the watch’s displayed name to select the correct one.
  3. Compare the codes. The app and the watch each show a pairing code. Read both screens carefully. Google describes the expected state as: “A matching pairing code shows on both the app and watch.” Tap Pair only when every digit matches.
  4. Wait for Bluetooth pairing. Pairing may take a few minutes. Keep the watch near the phone and leave the app open while the connection is negotiated.
  5. Sign in. When prompted, sign in to the Google Account you want associated with the watch. Complete verification, accept the displayed terms, and answer the country-of-purchase question when it appears; Google uses that information for warranty details.
  6. Choose whether to restore. If the app offers a backup, select restore to bring back the available saved setup, or decline it for a fresh configuration. A fresh setup does not mean LTE activation; cellular service remains a separate, optional step.
  7. Set wearing preferences. Choose the wrist on which you will wear the watch and the crown orientation. These choices tell the watch how to position its controls and on-screen layout.
  8. Finish the remaining prompts. Let the app complete its setup and any automatic update. When setup succeeds, the app should show Connected. Google says the watch updates automatically after you choose Start using your watch, so keep both devices together until that process is complete.

How to handle the pairing-code screen

The code comparison is the security checkpoint in the setup flow. Read the code on the phone, then read the code on the watch without assuming that a partially similar number is enough. If even one character differs, cancel that attempt and restart rather than accepting it. A new attempt should generate a fresh matching code.

Pairing can take several minutes, especially when the watch is also downloading software. Keep Bluetooth enabled, do not put either device in airplane mode, and avoid opening another watch-management app while the Pixel Watch app is working.

Confirm that setup is complete

A successful setup has three practical signs: the Pixel Watch app reports Connected, the watch responds to the phone’s setup controls, and no pairing prompt remains. Open the app once more after the initial update to check that the watch name and settings load normally. If you restored a backup, review the watch face, notifications, and app choices rather than assuming every setting was transferred; the restore choice is made during setup, and the app remains the place to adjust the watch afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not start LTE activation merely to test Bluetooth. The watch can pair and operate with the phone without a cellular plan. LTE matters when you want supported phone-independent connectivity and own the LTE version.

Allow the first update to finish

After you select Start using your watch, the watch can update automatically. Keep it near the phone and on sufficient charge until the app returns to its normal connected screen. A temporary restart during an update is not necessarily a failure; give the watch time to complete the process before repeating setup.

Fix pairing and setup problems

Run the basic connection checks first

When the watch cannot be found or the app stalls, check the items below in this order:

  • Bluetooth is on and the phone is connected to the internet.
  • Airplane mode is off on both the phone and watch.
  • The Pixel Watch app has nearby-device permission.
  • The app has the location permission Android requested.
  • The watch is powered on and close to the phone.
  • The phone, app, and watch software are current.

After correcting a setting, return to the Pixel Watch app and run setup again. Avoid switching between several Bluetooth-management screens while the app is searching; the app needs to own the pairing flow.

If the watch does not appear

Confirm that the watch has finished starting up rather than showing a charging or startup screen. Move it within a short distance of the phone, close and reopen the Pixel Watch app, and check the app permissions again. A phone can show Bluetooth as enabled while still blocking the app’s nearby-device access, so both settings matter.

  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

If the codes do not match

Do not tap Pair when the two codes differ. A mismatch means the current discovery attempt is not safe to accept. Restart the watch, wait for it to finish booting, and start the pairing attempt again from the Pixel Watch app. Keep the phone and watch close and compare the complete code, not just its first or last digit.

If setup has been running for more than 20 minutes

Google directs users to its setup troubleshooting flow when setup takes longer than 20 minutes. Before opening that flow, note the exact screen where the process stopped and whether the watch ever showed a code or a connection message. That detail helps distinguish discovery, code verification, account sign-in, and update stages.

Do not repeatedly cancel an update at the same point without checking the basics. Record whether the phone has internet access and whether the watch remains charged, since both are needed for the longer update stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart before resetting

A restart is a low-risk next step. On the watch, hold the crown for about three seconds, scroll to Restart, and select it. Wait until the watch is fully on, then retry pairing in the app. Restarting does not intentionally erase the watch’s apps, settings, or data.

Use a factory reset only as a later measure

Google lists factory reset as a possible remedy for problems such as Can’t pair and Can’t find your watch, but it warns that a reset erases all apps, settings, and data. Treat it as a last resort after permissions, airplane mode, internet, Bluetooth, software updates, and a restart have been checked.

If the watch was previously paired to another phone, or if the original phone was reset, do not assume a reset is the first answer. Google’s transfer guidance covers backing up, resetting, and pairing again for situations that can produce a Can’t connect error. Follow that transfer process so you do not erase data before checking whether it can be backed up or restored.

When the watch belongs to someone else

A watch that remains associated with a previous phone may not complete a normal new-device setup. The previous owner should use the supported backup and transfer steps where possible. If you proceed to a reset, explain that the reset removes the watch’s local apps, settings, and data; it is not merely a Bluetooth refresh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do during troubleshooting

  • Do not accept a nonmatching code.
  • Do not assume LTE activation will fix a Bluetooth pairing problem.
  • Do not factory-reset before checking whether an earlier phone can be backed up or transferred.
  • Do not buy a new power adapter unless your existing adapter fails the dock’s minimum 7.5-watt requirement.

Set up LTE only if you need cellular service

LTE is optional. The watch must first be paired with a compatible phone, and activation then follows the Pixel Watch app and a supported carrier’s process. Carrier availability, supported plans, and activation instructions vary by region, so confirm the current requirements for your country before assuming an LTE plan can be added.

Choice What it provides What you need
Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Pixel Watch 4 Normal watch use while paired to the phone or connected to available Wi-Fi A compatible Android phone, Bluetooth, the Pixel Watch app, and internet access during setup
LTE Pixel Watch 4 Supported cellular features when the watch is away from the phone The LTE watch model, a compatible phone for initial pairing, and an eligible carrier service in your region

Activate after pairing

  1. Complete the ordinary Bluetooth setup and confirm the app says Connected.
  2. In the Pixel Watch app, choose the cellular or mobile-service setup option shown for your watch.
  3. Review the carrier choices and eligibility for your country. The list and steps can differ by region.
  4. Follow the carrier’s identity, number, and plan prompts, then wait for the app to confirm activation.

Do not treat a carrier promotion as a universal part of Pixel Watch 4 setup. Google has described region-specific offers, including a US offer for eligible LTE purchasers, but eligibility, activation deadlines, usage limits, and terms can change. Check the live official offer and carrier documentation rather than relying on an old promotion.

Texting over cellular can also depend on a compatible phone number and messaging service. If those conditions are not met, LTE activation does not guarantee that every messaging feature will work independently from the phone.

Decide whether LTE is worth setting up

Choose LTE when you specifically need supported connectivity away from the phone and your carrier offers compatible service. Choose the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth route when the watch will normally stay with the phone or use Wi-Fi. Both models still use the same initial app-based pairing process, so LTE should not delay ordinary setup.

What to do after the first successful connection

Review the orientation and fit

Wear the watch on the wrist selected in the app and confirm that the crown is on the side you chose. If the controls feel reversed, change the wrist or crown orientation in the watch settings rather than repeating Bluetooth pairing.

Allow updates to finish

Pixel Watch 4 can update automatically after you select Start using your watch. Leave the watch near the phone and sufficiently charged while the update runs. Interrupting an update by powering off either device can leave setup incomplete, so wait for the app to return to its normal connected state.

Keep recovery in mind

If you later move the watch to another phone, use Google’s backup and transfer guidance before wiping the old setup. A backup gives you a path to restore supported settings, while a factory reset without a backup removes the watch’s local data.

Check the app after setup

Open the Pixel Watch app after the first connection and verify that the watch’s name, battery status, and settings load. Review notifications and watch-face choices after restoring a backup, because restoration may not reproduce every preference exactly. The app is also where you return later for software updates, transfer steps, and optional cellular setup.

Quick decision guide

  • Phone is Android 11 or newer and the watch is new: install or update the Pixel Watch app, prepare permissions, and follow the pairing steps above.
  • The watch appears but the code differs: reject the mismatch, restart the watch, and retry.
  • The app cannot find the watch: verify Bluetooth, internet, airplane mode, nearby-device and location permissions, then restart.
  • Setup exceeds 20 minutes: use Google’s setup troubleshooting flow and record the screen where it stopped.
  • The watch was paired before: consult transfer and backup guidance before considering a reset.
  • You want phone-independent connectivity: first complete Bluetooth setup, then check LTE model and regional carrier eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Android version does Pixel Watch 4 require?

Google specifies Android 11.0 or newer for Pixel Watch 4, along with a Google Account, the Google Pixel Watch app, and internet access. Check the model-specific requirement rather than relying on a general setup page for older watch models.

Do I need an LTE plan to pair Pixel Watch 4?

No. LTE activation is optional. Pair the watch over Bluetooth first; activate cellular service afterward only if you own the LTE model and have an eligible carrier plan in your region.

Why can’t my phone find the watch?

Turn on Bluetooth, connect the phone to the internet, turn airplane mode off on both devices, and allow the Pixel Watch app’s location and nearby-device permissions. Keep the powered-on watch close to the phone, then retry in the Pixel Watch app.

What should I do if the pairing codes are different?

Do not tap Pair. Restart the watch, wait for it to finish booting, and begin the attempt again in the Pixel Watch app. Accept pairing only when the complete codes on the phone and watch match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should Pixel Watch 4 setup take?

Pairing can take a few minutes, especially if software updates are required. If setup has run for more than 20 minutes, use Google’s setup troubleshooting flow and note the screen where it stopped.

Will a factory reset delete my watch data?

Yes. Google warns that a factory reset erases apps, settings, and data. Restart first and check backup or transfer guidance, particularly if the watch was paired with another phone.

Is a USB-C power adapter included with Pixel Watch 4?

The box includes a USB-C Quick Charge Dock, but Google says the USB-C adapter is not included. The dock requires a compatible adapter rated at least 7.5 watts, so an existing suitable adapter may be enough.

Can I switch Pixel Watch 4 to a new phone without losing everything?

Use Google’s backup and transfer guidance before wiping the old setup. Depending on the situation, you may need to back up, reset, and pair again; resetting without a backup removes local apps, settings, and data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use an Android 11-or-newer phone, update the Pixel Watch app, enable Bluetooth, internet, location, and nearby-device access, then pair through the app and accept only a matching code. Finish the account, backup, wrist, and crown choices before allowing updates to complete. LTE is a separate, optional step that depends on the LTE model and regional carrier support.
