Start by checking your TV’s HDMI labels and manual, then connect each device to a port that supports the format you want. Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI setting for the console input, use a game picture mode for play, choose a movie-oriented preset for films, and check every link in the streaming chain before troubleshooting picture quality.

1. Check the TV’s ports before connecting devices

HDMI inputs on the same TV may support different features. Check the port labels and the manual for your exact model, especially if you want to use 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), or eARC. The number of compatible ports and the available options can also vary by model and region.

Sony’s BRAVIA guidance, covering several current model families, directs owners of consoles that support 4K 120 Hz to use an input labelled for 4K 120 Hz or VRR. Its guidance also notes that HDMI options vary by model and may differ by country or region. Check Sony’s BRAVIA console connection guide, or consult the support page for your TV’s make and model.

2. Connect the console and enable its HDMI format

For a console that supports 4K 120 Hz, begin with the cable supplied with the console. If you need a replacement, Sony recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for this use. Use a port that supports the console’s target resolution and refresh rate, then enable the TV’s enhanced or high-bandwidth format for that input if the TV requires it.

Manufacturers use different names for the setting. Sony calls it HDMI signal format/VRR, LG uses HDMI Deep Color or Ultra HD Deep Color, and Samsung calls it Input Signal Plus. The exact menu path depends on the TV model and software, so follow the matching manufacturer guide rather than assuming a setting name or location applies to every set.

3. Set up gaming features

Use Game Mode or the equivalent

On the input used by your console or gaming PC, select Game Mode, Game picture mode, or the TV maker’s equivalent. These modes are intended to reduce the processing that can add input lag. Sony’s guide is specifically titled “How to reduce input lag when using the Game setting”; settings and effects can differ across models.

Enable VRR or ALLM if the whole setup supports them

VRR can be useful when the TV and source device both support it. ALLM, when supported, can automatically switch the TV into a low-latency mode when gaming begins. These features depend on the TV, the particular HDMI port, and the console or PC. Check each device’s specifications and the TV’s guide; enabling a setting on one device does not add support to another.

4. Choose a movie picture mode that suits your room

For films, Movie or Filmmaker-style picture mode is a reasonable starting point if your TV offers it. Presets, picture processing, and their appearance vary by model. There is no single brightness value or universal calibration recipe established for every TV, room, and piece of content. Compare the available presets with the film you watch and choose the look that works for your room and preference.

5. Check the full path for 4K or HDR streaming

High-quality playback depends on more than the TV’s resolution. Check the title and subscription plan, the TV app or streaming device, its software, the HDMI cable and port, and the account’s playback quality. Netflix says that when part of a setup does not meet the requirements for a requested quality, playback falls back to the highest quality available for the device, port, or cable. See Netflix’s video-quality guidance.

For an external streaming device, verify that it is connected to an appropriate HDMI port and that the full device chain supports the format you want. If a title or service plan does not offer 4K or HDR, changing the TV’s HDMI setting cannot make that content available.

6. Diagnose buffering or low streaming quality

Netflix recommends a stable internet connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are Netflix recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular playback result; the service, account, device chain, and stability of the connection also matter. Check Netflix’s internet connection recommendations.

  • If playback buffers, check whether the connection is stable and whether other devices or network activity are affecting it.
  • Netflix recommends using a wired or Wi-Fi connection and offers an in-app network check.
  • If the connection meets the service’s speed recommendation but the picture still is not 4K or HDR, revisit the title, plan, app or streaming device, software, HDMI port, and cable.

7. Connect a soundbar or receiver with ARC or eARC

For compatible audio equipment, connect the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s HDMI input labelled ARC or eARC/ARC. The TV and audio system must both support the feature you intend to use. On the Sony setup covered in its guidance, set the TV’s eARC mode to Auto and enable eARC on the audio system. Other models may use different menu names or steps, so check both manuals. See Sony’s eARC setup instructions.
