Set up a new Samsung Galaxy by completing the welcome wizard, transferring data if you want to keep content from your old phone, and then checking your screen lock, privacy permissions, updates, and display and battery preferences. The exact labels and available features depend on the Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and region.
1. Complete the welcome wizard
Turn on the phone and follow the on-screen prompts to choose a language, review the terms, connect to Wi-Fi, and select whether to set up from another device or start manually. Continue through the remaining account and setup prompts. If mobile service is not ready, Samsung’s cited Galaxy A setup flow allows it to be configured later in Settings; the exact steps can differ by model and carrier. 2. Choose whether to transfer data
Use Smart Switch or the setup wizard to bring data over from a Galaxy or other Android phone, or from an iPhone. Depending on the source device and transfer method, this can include items such as contacts, photos, files, and apps; do not assume every setting or piece of app data will transfer identically. Follow the on-screen instructions for the selected devices and connection method.

3. Secure the lock screen and notifications
Set a screen lock during setup or afterward in the phone’s lock-screen settings. Choose a PIN, password, or pattern that is not easy for someone else to guess. Add fingerprint or face recognition if your model supports it and you are comfortable using it. Then decide whether lock-screen notifications should show message content, show only that a notification arrived, or remain hidden. Hiding previews can keep private messages from being readable when the phone is sitting nearby.
4. Review privacy permissions and controls
Open Settings > Security and privacy, then look for Permission manager (labels and menu locations vary). Review which apps can use the camera, microphone, location, and other sensitive access. Change permissions for apps that do not need them; you can usually allow access only while an app is in use where that option is offered.

Privacy choices extend beyond app permissions. Review Samsung and Google controls for diagnostic data, account activity, and advertising personalization, and set them according to your preferences. 5. Check for system and app updates
- Open Settings > Software update and select the available check or download-and-install option. Some carriers use a different path or control when updates are offered.
- Install any available update and follow prompts, including restarting the phone if requested. Allow time for downloads and restarts.
- Open the Google Play Store and Galaxy Store to check for app updates in each store.
Update availability and menu wording depend on the model, software release, and carrier. If no update appears, that does not establish that every Galaxy model is on the same release schedule.

6. Adjust display and battery settings to suit you
These choices are preference-dependent, and not every Galaxy offers every option. Look under Settings > Display and Settings > Battery or the equivalent menus on your software version.
- Screen timeout: A shorter timeout turns off the display sooner when you stop using the phone, which can help conserve battery.
- Adaptive brightness: Let the phone adjust brightness to ambient light, or set brightness manually if you prefer consistent control.
- Refresh rate: If offered, choose the smoothness and power-use balance that suits your use. The available modes differ by model.
- Always On Display and dark mode: Enable, disable, or schedule these according to how you want the screen to behave and look.
- Power saving: Use it when extending battery life matters more than full performance. It can reduce performance and delay background app updates or notifications.
7. Check the box and charging compatibility
Some Galaxy phones are sold without a wall adapter. Check the box contents and the exact phone model before buying an adapter or cable. Charging speed and wireless charging support are not universal across Galaxy phones; match the charger and cable to the phone’s supported charging rate and requirements. Samsung’s support material gives 25W and higher-speed examples, but no single wattage is right for every unspecified Galaxy model. 8. Consider optional privacy and data-use tools
Secure Folder
On supported models, Secure Folder can keep selected files and apps in a separate protected area. If the option is absent, it may not be available on that device or software version.
