For a strong starting point, choose a picture mode that suits your room, correct any stretched or cropped image, and select the sound output you actually use. There is no single set of picture numbers that works for every LG or Samsung TV: available controls vary by model, year, region, input, and software.
Choose a picture mode for your room and content
Picture mode is the most useful first adjustment, but it is a starting point rather than a universal calibration. LG notes that lighting, screen reflectance, display capabilities, settings, and the content itself affect the picture. Its current picture guidance, dated September 3, 2026, is at LG Support. Menu names and available modes can differ; consult your TV’s manual if the route below does not match.
On an LG TV
Open Settings and look for Picture Settings, or use picture controls in Quick Settings. LG’s Quick Settings guide explains that these are lightweight controls and that availability depends on model and country: LG Quick Settings guide. Choose a mode based on viewing conditions, preference, or the kind of video you are watching. If the picture seems different on another device, check its input-specific settings.
On a Samsung TV
Where available, go to Settings or All Settings > Picture > Picture Mode. Samsung describes the modes this way: Samsung picture settings guidance.

- Standard: a general-use choice for most viewing environments.
- Dynamic: intended for brighter viewing environments.
- Movie: intended for dark-room viewing.
- Filmmaker Mode: intended to show content without picture changes; it may look darker.
Not every Samsung model offers every mode. Start with the option that fits your room and viewing preference, then adjust the screen’s light output if needed. Avoid copying brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, or OLED-light numbers from another TV as if they were universal; models and lighting conditions differ.
Check picture size before tuning details
If faces look stretched or the edges of the image disappear, check picture size or aspect ratio before changing fine picture controls. Samsung documents these options, with availability dependent on model and settings, in its picture settings guidance:

- Custom: manually adjustable framing.
- 4:3: for standard-definition material.
- Fit to Screen: displays the full image.
Use the framing intended for the source rather than zooming by default. A missing edge can be a picture-size setting, not a problem with the panel.
Change motion, processing, or game settings only if needed
Picture clarity and motion controls are optional: use them only if you prefer the effect for the content you watch. Samsung says Game Mode can optimize speed on select models, with a possible decline in graphics quality. If you play games, try it and judge the trade-off for yourself rather than treating it as a required picture improvement. Menu availability and names vary by TV.

Choose the sound mode that fits what you hear
On a Samsung TV, open Settings or All Settings > Sound > Sound Mode, where that route is available. Samsung’s sound guidance describes the options as follows:
- Standard: balanced sound.
- Optimized: emphasizes effects and spaciousness.
- Amplify: raises mid and high tones, which may help when voices are difficult to understand.
These are listening preferences, not quality rankings. Try the mode that addresses what you want to change. Some sound controls may be unavailable when external speakers are selected.

Connect a soundbar and select it as the output
If you want sound from a soundbar, use the ports and cable specified by both devices’ manuals, then select the soundbar in the TV’s Sound Output menu. Samsung’s sound-output guidance is at Samsung Support.

Using HDMI ARC
- Check both manuals to confirm that the TV and soundbar support ARC and identify their ARC-labeled ports.
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI ARC port to the TV’s HDMI ARC port using the connection specified in the manuals. Samsung describes ARC as a one-cable HDMI option when both devices have the relevant ports: Samsung soundbar connection guidance.
- On the TV, open Sound Output and select the connected external device. The exact label can vary by model.
Do not choose a digital audio format by guesswork. Supported formats depend on the receiving device and connection; check the manuals and Samsung’s digital audio format guidance before changing that setting.
Troubleshoot picture or sound that seems wrong
Check the basic settings and signal path before assuming the TV is defective. LG notes that picture modes and settings may differ by input; Samsung’s picture guidance also describes model-dependent controls.
- Image looks too bright or dim: review picture mode, room conditions, and energy-saving settings.
- Image is stretched or cropped: check picture size or aspect ratio.
- Only one device looks wrong: confirm the selected input and its picture settings.
- No soundbar audio: confirm the cable is connected to the intended ARC ports, if using ARC, and that Sound Output is set to the external device.
- Problem persists: run a built-in picture or sound test if your model provides one. A test may help distinguish TV behavior from an input or broadcast issue, but availability varies.
Because menu routes and available controls change by model, year, region, input, and software, use your model’s manual when an option named here is missing or located elsewhere.
