Set up a new Lenovo laptop by completing Windows 11 setup, installing Windows updates, then checking Lenovo’s model-specific updates. After that, install only the apps you need and review Windows privacy controls. Screens and bundled software vary by Lenovo model, Windows build, and region.
1. Finish Windows setup on your new Lenovo laptop
Follow the on-screen prompts for your region, network, account, and device preferences. Which prompts appear—and the available choices—depend on the laptop configuration, Windows edition, and current Windows build.
Connect to a trusted network and plug the laptop into power before installing updates. If you plan to transfer important files or make major changes, first confirm the device is connected to the network you intend to use.
2. Install Windows 11 updates first
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, then install applicable updates.
- Restart when Windows asks you to.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again if updates remain pending.
Lenovo recommends installing Windows updates before Lenovo System Update because some Lenovo updates depend on Windows components. Lenovo’s System Update guidance and first-step support guidance describe this sequence.

3. Update Lenovo laptop drivers and software
Windows Update handles Windows updates; Lenovo’s update channel can identify drivers, firmware, and applications intended for your particular product. Use the option available for your model rather than assuming one Lenovo utility supports every laptop.
| Update route | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Windows updates, including applicable security and quality updates. | Run it first, before checking Lenovo updates. |
| Lenovo Vantage | Can check for Lenovo updates and provide features such as hardware settings, battery information, diagnostics, support, and compatible accessory discovery. Features vary by model. | Search for Lenovo Vantage from Start. If available, open System Update, check for updates, and install all or selected updates. |
| Lenovo System Update | On supported systems, automates detection and installation of drivers, BIOS updates, and applications. | Use it if your product family and operating system are supported. Lenovo recommends it after a fresh Windows setup or reimage. |
| Lenovo product support page | Provides support and downloads for a particular Lenovo product. | Use the exact model’s support page if neither utility is available or you need a particular driver. |
Lenovo classifies updates as critical, recommended, or optional. Install critical updates promptly; recommended updates are advised, while optional utilities are a matter of user judgment. Restart if an update requires it, then check again if the tool reports remaining or dependent updates. See Lenovo’s System Update instructions and Lenovo’s update sequence guidance.

4. Treat BIOS/UEFI updates with extra care
BIOS/UEFI is firmware, not an ordinary app update. If you decide to install one, use the package and instructions for your exact Lenovo model and follow its procedure. Do not use firmware from a third-party driver site.

5. Which apps should you install on a new laptop?
Start with the software needed for tasks you actually do. That might include a browser, password manager, video-meeting app, or productivity tools. Lenovo Vantage may also be useful for compatible hardware settings, battery information, diagnostics, and support; available features depend on the model. Lenovo’s Vantage overview describes its functions.
- Prefer the Microsoft Store or the app maker’s official website.
- Before uninstalling software, check its publisher and purpose. Bundled apps differ across Lenovo models, and there is no established universal list of optional Lenovo apps that every owner should remove.
- Keep apps you recognize and use; do not assume that every preinstalled app is unnecessary.
6. Review Windows 11 privacy settings
Open Settings > Privacy & security and review controls according to your preferences. The labels and locations can change between Windows releases. These settings offer choices about optional data, personalization, and app access; they do not amount to one switch that turns off every kind of data collection or advertising.

Diagnostics & feedback
In Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback, review optional diagnostic data, tailored experiences, and other feedback controls. Windows still uses required diagnostic data as part of its described operation, so turning off optional diagnostics does not stop all collection. Microsoft explains these controls in its diagnostics and privacy guidance.

Windows provides controls for personalized recommendations and the advertising identifier. Depending on the build, related settings may appear under General or Recommendations & offers. Turning off advertising ID does not reduce the number of ads; it may make ads less relevant in apps that use this Windows identifier. It does not disable every form of advertising. See Microsoft’s guidance on Windows privacy settings and recommendations and offers in Windows 11.
Location, camera, microphone, and other app permissions
Under Settings > Privacy & security, review permissions such as location, camera, microphone, and contacts. Allow access for apps that need it for a feature you use. Many Windows permission lists mainly govern Microsoft Store apps; desktop apps may not appear there and can have separate permission settings and privacy policies. Microsoft outlines the distinction in its Windows app permissions guidance.
