Register your new Kindle to the Amazon account that holds your books, connect it to Wi-Fi, and sync. Most books purchased through that account can then be downloaded from your Kindle library. If a title is missing, you can send it to the new device from Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page.

Before you set up the new Kindle

Have the Kindle, the Amazon account associated with your books, and your Wi-Fi network name and password ready. The setup instructions below follow Amazon’s guide for the Kindle 11th Generation; menus and labels can differ on other generations.

Set up and register the Kindle

  1. Turn on the Kindle, then select your language and location.
  2. Choose Set up on this Kindle to enter the connection and account details on the device, or choose Set up with your phone to use Amazon’s Simple Setup.
  3. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and follow the on-screen prompts to register it to the Amazon account that contains your books. Amazon’s Kindle 11th Generation setup guide describes these steps.

Using phone setup

For Simple Setup, install the Kindle app on an iOS or Android phone, enable Amazon Device Simple Setup in the app, and turn on Bluetooth. On Android, Location Services must also be enabled. Amazon says the app can detect the account and Wi-Fi passwords previously saved on the phone.

Sync and find your books

Once the Kindle is registered and online, sync it to retrieve eligible account content. Amazon Customer Service says sync can download pending books, notes, and highlights, as well as back up the furthest page read. From the Kindle home screen, tap the Sync icon or choose Sync and Check for Items; the exact label may vary by device.

Send a missing book to the new Kindle

  5. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and sync again, then check its library.

Troubleshoot books that still do not appear

  • Check the connection: Make sure the Kindle is online and Airplane mode is off. If necessary, reconnect to Wi-Fi and sync.
  • Check the Amazon account: Confirm the new Kindle is registered to the same account used to purchase the book.
  • Check the order and library: If the title is absent from Manage Your Content and Devices, confirm the digital order is complete. In the Kindle library, clear restrictive filters or search for the title.
  • Restart the Kindle: Restart it and try syncing again.
  • Resolve Wi-Fi problems: Verify the network name and password, move closer to the router, restart the Kindle and router, update the Kindle software, or test with a phone hotspot. Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi. Devices released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption; see Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Why a factory reset is not a transfer step

A reset is not needed to move account books to a new Kindle. Amazon says a factory reset removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and deregisters the device. Amazon identifies preparing a Kindle for sale or gifting, and some troubleshooting situations, as reasons to reset. Do not reset the old device as part of a routine transfer; unsynced content could be lost. See Amazon’s factory-reset guidance.
