To get the best picture and refresh rate from a new gaming monitor, connect it through a port and cable supported by both the monitor and graphics card, select the monitor’s intended resolution and highest available refresh rate in Windows, then check VRR and enable HDR only for supported displays and content. Finish by calibrating HDR in your normal room lighting and adjusting SDR brightness by eye.
Connect the monitor and confirm Windows sees the right display
Connect the monitor to a video output supported by both it and your graphics card. Check the monitor manual and the GPU specifications for the required port and cable at your target resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode; the right connection depends on the capabilities of both devices.
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the monitor you want to configure and check its reported resolution and refresh rate. Menu wording can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guidance explains how to find these settings.
Set the intended resolution and refresh rate
On the selected display’s Advanced display page, choose the highest refresh rate offered for the resolution you want to use. The menu is capability-dependent: it reflects what Windows can use with the current display and connection. Check the resolution again after changing the rate. Windows marks refresh rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk; choosing one may change the resolution.

- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
A refresh rate is how often the display updates its image. For example, Microsoft explains that a 60 Hz display updates 60 times per second. The number to choose is not simply the largest one in the menu if selecting it changes the resolution you intend to keep.
Check VRR and distinguish it from Dynamic Refresh Rate
Advanced display indicates whether the selected monitor supports variable refresh rate (VRR). VRR lets the display adapt its refresh to a game’s output, and many popular games use it automatically when available, according to Microsoft. A Windows fixed refresh-rate selection is not, by itself, a switch that enables VRR.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a separate feature. Microsoft says it requires VRR and a display of at least 120 Hz, and notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game runs at a lower rate with DRR enabled, Microsoft suggests turning DRR off.

Enable HDR only when the display and content support it
Open Windows HDR settings and select the intended display. Check the capabilities Windows reports, and turn HDR on when the display and system support it and you are using HDR games or apps. HDR is not a universal picture-quality improvement: an HDR signal and the display’s handling of it affect the result. Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance covers supported displays and related settings.

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
For some laptop setups using an external HDR display, HDR may be unavailable while displays are mirrored or duplicated. Microsoft recommends extending the displays for that use case.
Calibrate HDR in Windows 11
Windows HDR Calibration is a visual workflow for Windows 11, not a requirement for every monitor. It uses patterns to help set the darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail and maximum brightness. Run it full-screen on the HDR display with HDR turned on, in the room lighting in which you normally use the monitor.

- Turn on HDR for the display in Windows settings and install/open Windows HDR Calibration.
- Run the app full-screen on the HDR display and follow its three patterns, adjusting each until the indicated dark detail, bright detail and maximum brightness look right.
- Adjust saturation conservatively; excessive saturation can make the image look unnatural.
Microsoft Support advises: “Run this app whenever you change your display setup (for example, add a new display or replace an existing one).” Windows HDR Calibration instructions provide the app workflow. A colorimeter or spectroradiometer can measure SDR/HDR white-level differences, but that is an optional measurement approach, not a normal prerequisite for the visual calibration.

Balance SDR brightness against HDR
For an external HDR display, Windows provides an SDR content brightness control that changes SDR brightness relative to HDR. There is no universal numeric setting: the right balance varies by monitor. Start near the default and adjust while looking at familiar SDR and HDR content. If an app’s brightness does not respond to the slider, restart the app. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.

Troubleshoot HDR color fringing or a washed-out image
- Color fringing: For the specific HDR color-fringing issue Microsoft documents, update the graphics driver. If you are using HDMI and both the monitor and graphics card support DisplayPort for HDR, try DisplayPort instead. Confirm the cable and port meet the devices’ requirements.
- HDMI is the only option: Microsoft lists reducing refresh rate or resolution as troubleshooting options for that HDR color problem. These are remedies for the issue, not the preferred everyday gaming configuration.
- Image looks too bright, dark or oversaturated: Revisit the HDR Calibration patterns and saturation adjustment, then balance SDR content brightness against HDR using familiar content. Avoid applying a preset brightness or color value from another monitor.
- HDR is unavailable: Check the selected display’s reported capabilities and the cable/port path. On the affected laptop external-display setups, switch from duplicating to extending displays.
- Refresh rate or resolution changed unexpectedly: Return to Advanced display, reselect the intended display, and verify both values. A rate marked with an asterisk may not support the current resolution.
