For a new Dell XPS 13, start by lowering screen brightness to a comfortable level, use Windows Battery saver when you need more unplugged time, and check which apps are consuming battery. These reversible changes are safer first steps than changing BIOS settings or assuming the laptop has a particular charge-limit feature. Actual runtime varies by XPS configuration and workload; Dell does not give one hours-of-battery figure that applies to every XPS 13.

Set up the everyday battery-saving options

Dell’s XPS guidance, last modified 15 May 2026, recommends adjusting display brightness, using Battery saver, reviewing app battery use, and limiting connectivity when it is not needed. The exact Windows menus can change between versions, so use Settings search if a label below differs on your laptop. Dell’s XPS battery guidance provides the model-family recommendations.

  1. Lower display brightness. Open Settings > System > Display and reduce brightness to a level that remains comfortable. The display can be a major power draw. On an OLED configuration, Dell also notes that a dark Windows or app theme may help.
  2. Use Battery saver when you need longer runtime. Open Settings > System > Power & battery and turn on Battery saver (some Windows versions show Energy saver). It is useful when background activity matters less than extending time away from an outlet; turn it off again when you prefer normal background behavior.
  3. Find power-hungry apps before closing anything. In Settings > System > Power & battery, expand Battery usage and review Battery usage per app. Windows’ ranking can help identify unexpected consumption. Close or adjust only apps you recognize and do not need; do not end unfamiliar processes solely because they appear high in a list.
  4. Disable connectivity only when you can work offline. Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth if you are not using them. Airplane Mode is another option when network access is unnecessary, but it disconnects the laptop from online files and services until you disable it.

Check the Dell battery settings available for your model

Dell says XPS power-management functions are integrated into MyDell, but available features depend on the device. Check Dell’s support page using the laptop’s service tag or exact model to see which application and battery settings are supported: Dell power-management software information. Do not assume Dell Power Manager is a universal XPS 13 download or that every model exposes the same controls.

Charging controls are also model-specific. For example, Dell’s XPS 13 9305 manual describes longevity and desktop charging modes but says they may not be supported on all laptops. Dell’s XPS 13 9310 service manual documents BIOS battery configuration and advanced charge configuration. Those examples do not establish that the same options exist on a different, newer XPS generation. Consult the manual for your exact model before changing charging or BIOS settings.

Use advanced performance controls only for a specific need

Dell identifies disabling Intel Turbo Boost as a possible way to improve runtime, with the trade-off of lower maximum performance. It is not a default first-day setting. BIOS options and steps vary by XPS model; check the manual for your exact generation before making this change. For most users, reducing brightness and using Battery saver are easier to reverse and less likely to affect demanding work.

Work out whether battery drain is unusual

Compare usage under similar conditions before deciding the laptop has a problem: note the workload, brightness, display type, network use, and apps running in the background. A short first-day observation by itself is not enough to diagnose a defective battery.

Why there is no single XPS 13 battery-life target

Runtime depends on the laptop’s configuration and how it is used. Panel type, workload, brightness, wireless use, background software, and system configuration all affect the result. Dell’s illustrative OLED example is not a universal benchmark for an unspecified XPS 13, so treat any hours figure as meaningful only when it names the specific configuration and usage conditions.
